Since 1936 when the first stamp depicted Charles Darwin is issued by Ecuador, in order to commemorate 100 anniversary since his visit on Galapagos Islands, many other post stamps are issued around the world. Let's show here our stamps and covers related to the great scientists. Ecuador 1936 (on the stamp 1935) [/quote]

In 1982 four small island countries issued some stamps in order to commemorate 100 years since death of the great scientists: Likely all four sets are produced by the same artist. Do you see something strange on stamps of Mauritius ?

All four sets above are commemorate Darwin's visit on these islands and shows various occasions of Darwin's journey on HMS Beagle. The unusual on the stamp of R2.50 is the face of Darwin. If you look closer, you can see the white man seating on the elephant - I suppose he is C. Darwin. However at the time when he made his journey he didn't had any beard and mustache - looks much younger, as depicted on stamps from another 3 sets. Moreover, look on the form of the beard and moustache there. It different from well known face of Darwin, depicted on 25c stamp.

Mike you got me. What is strange? I'm curious too. I looked at these stamps for quite a while, trying to find some little error but nothing came to mind. Then I thought, how absurd that Darwin should be on an elephant in Mauritius. It's a long, long time since Mauritius was close enough to the mainland for elephants to find their way over there (as in Sri Lanka, which once had a land bridge to India). Before posting anything, I thought I'd check and make certain that there aren't any elephants on Mauritius. Amazingly enough, Darwin did ride an elephant in Mauritius! I like the line near the end, "Quite how the elephant got to Mauritius is, at least to me, a matter of speculation." www.isla-mauricia.com/blog-en/?p=659Ryan

As far I know, Darwin has indeed a trip on an elephant by his stay on Mauritius island. The elephant was provided him by governor of the islands who got the elephants as present from some Indian Maharaja.

FDC like covers with GB stamps from 2009, sent to me this year: Both sent inside of water protected bag, e.g. These stamps. as well as many others issued in 2009 in order to commemorate both the 200th Anniversary or bicentenary of the birth of the greatest naturalist in history, Charles Robert Darwin, and the 150th Anniversary of the publication of his most famous work On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.

I am at present listening to the audiobook version of "The voyage of the Beagle", read by Richard Dawkins. I have just reached the part where Darwin talks about the Falkland Islands 'fox' (actually a wolf) where he predicts that in a few years it would go the same way as the Dodo...and it did! The first mammalian quadruped hunted to its extinction by mostly European men. How sad.

Perfs14 showed a Danish stamp commemorating Niels Bohr's atomic theory. This stamp was one in a set of 2 values, issued jointly by Denmark and Greenland. Here is the Greenlandic stamp for the other value in the set. Ryan

Darwin's own autobiography written for his children (among many other of his works) can be found here free! The Gutenberg site is great to visit when you are looking for interesting stuff to read.

John James Audubon was an American ornithologist, artist and naturalist known for his studies, drawings and paintings of North American birds. This 1c bright blue green, perf. 10.5x11 stamp (Scott 874) was issued April 8, 1940 as part of the American Scientists series within the Famous Americans issue. Dr. Crawford W. Long was an American surgeon and pharmacist best known for his first use of inhaled diethyl ether as an anesthetic. This 2c rose carmine stamp (Scott 875) was issued in his honor on April 8, 1940. Luther Burbank developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants, including 113 varieties of plums and prunes, 50 varieties of berries, over 50 varieties of lilies, and a freestone-type peach. This 3c bright red violet stamp (Scott 876) was issued in his honor on April 17, 1940. Major Walter Reed, Medical Corps, U.S. Army, led a military mission to Cuba in June 1900 and within just eight months discovered the secret to yellow fever. This 5c ultramarine stamp (Scott 877) was issued in his honor on April 17, 1940. Jane Addams was a pioneer settlement social worker, public philosopher, sociologist, author, and leader in women's suffrage and world peace. This 10c dark brown stamp (Scott 878) was issued in her honor on April 26, 1940.

This 10c dark brown stamp (Scott 878) was issued in her honor on April 26, 1940. Just on a whim I considered the odd spelling of Jane Addams' last name and yes, Charles Addams, the cartoonist whose work later turned into the American sitcom The Addams Family, was a relative - first cousin, twice removed. (Extreme lack of scientific content to follow ...) Ryan

Charles Darwin apparently met Audubon when the latter was in England, it was here that he finally got his fantastic drawings of American birds published...today one of the most expensive books (in the millions for each surviving copy).
PS - I loved the Addams family!

In 2009, Macedonia issued a set of two stamps: (These stamps are issued in mini-sheets of 9, first row of each MS are above) Charles Darwin can be seen on one of these stamps, Louis Braille, who born on the same year as Darwin (1809), and who was the inventor of a system used by the blind people for reading and writing, on the second.

It's interesting to see that these recent stamps from Mongolia now have only Latin script on them - no Cyrillic, no Mongolian script.

Here are some interesting Charles Darwin cards and a cover. The 4 British Darwin stamps shown above are franked on 4 cards with 'silk' cachets. Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, studied at Christ's College, Cambridge and set sail from Plymouth on his famous Voyage of the Beagle. Scan_20200712 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr This cover was carried on the ship 'The Eye of the Wind' from Panama to the Galapagos Islands as part of Operation Drake, a 2 year voyage around the world with young people from many countries. The postal service from the Galapagos is most bizarre, the unstamped mail is given to visitors to deliver when they get home or post on! So, there is no formal Galapagos postmark. In this instance, as a favour to Operation Drake, the Postal Service Administration has canceled the covers with its department's, undated, handstamp. It was then taken to Fiji and the cover bears a 'Post Office, Suva, Fiji' postmark on the reverse. Scan_20200712 (3) by Daniel, on Flickr
