Vignette : Scenes from the Great fresco at the Romanian Athenaeum, showing scenes important to Romanian History. This Vignette is unknown to me, if anyone is familiar please advise. Well, that took me a lot longer than I thought it would, but I did eventually find a page with photos of each of the 25 frescoes. Your label shows the 8th image, "Dismounted". To paraphrase the machine translation - "an armed knight appears from over the mountains, accompanied by comrades prepared for battle. The knight is welcomed by the local population who present him with gifts of bread and salt." turistinbucurestiro.blogspot.ca/2013/07/fresca-ateneului-roman.htmlRyan

Wow! Ryan, that is magnificent. Thanks so much for chasing that up, what a masterpiece! A modern Sistine chapel. I am indebted to your endeavor, rounds up this stamp just perfectly.
By the way, I translated the text to "dismounted" but that just didn't make sense to me, so I thought it irrelevent.

This is a local vignette (named "Marea Fresca a Ateneului", in translation "The Big Fresco of Athenaeum") from the 1933 voluntary issue for subscription in order to achieve a circular fresco decorating the auditorium Athenaeum in Bucharest (75m long x 3m tall). I wonder how many of these labels were sold? I am sure they had other sources of funding as well, because imagine how much money it would cost to pay an artist for 5 years worth of work, painting 250 feet x 10 feet worth of murals .... Ryan

There are books printed, on this Ryan. Will look later, off on the bike for 120Km
Lonely Planet review for Romanian Athenaeum This exquisite circular building is the majestic heart of Romania's classical music tradition. The Romanian Athenaeum hosts prestigious concerts and should not be missed. Scenes from Romanian history are featured on the interior fresco inside the Big Hall on the first floor and the dome is 41m high. A huge appeal dubbed 'Give a Penny for the Athenaeum' saved it from disaster after the original patron's funds dried up.

I have sourced a set of labels. The 20 Lei is missing. Here is some background to why it is so: The key value (20 Lei) is quite diffficult to find . Because of the last scene represented on the circle wall (King Carol II and his son, Prince Michael - later King Michael I), during the communist regime (1945-1989) the fresco was banned and this label too. So, very few have survived till 1990... The fresco scene was erased by the communists and it was restored (repainted) 50 years later by the new democratic government (the subscription campaign from the early 90's was called "Dati un leu pentru Ateneu!" - "Give a penny for the Athenaeum!"). It was the biggest voluntary campaign after The Revolution and the new look of the Athenaeum from Bucharest is due to the Romanian people only. My appreciation to the author. 2013 Miniature sheet of the Athenaeum CV $4.50
