For its numbering Yvert puts the type of stamp with pub but in fact it is more complex. Indeed, type II is not limited to one pub but to several. This is why when you study in detail then you have to know the type of stamp, visual advertising and also know if it is in a high or low position. In the general catalog I think it gives an average rating.

you bring doubt to me. Is it the Gitane cycles or the tobacco company or is it the same?

The selvedge says "CIGARETTES GITANES" in 2 lines. Let me see if I can pilfer a pic from the internet...

racatrien, but you are correct that there are other advertising labels that say "GITANE" that are not tobacco. I think there is one for another company that makes hosiery. The one for tobacco says "GITANES" rather than "GITANE".

Since you have Y&T, see Carnet #283-C 50 & #283-C 52 for examples of hosiery company Gitane. The label says "BAS SOIE" and "GITANE" in 2 lines.

Yes have this indeed! The ad was to pay for the cost of printing the card. It seems the Temperance Movement killed it off very quickly and it was withdrawn from sale . However I am still looking for the Gitanes selvage . I have other Gitanes items but not that.

I have several GITANE (silk stockings) but not GITANES tobacco. It's not the same theme 😉

I will PM you the sales listing from which I pilfered the picture in case it interests you... Don't know if the price is reasonable or not. The GITANES advertisement appeared in 5 positions on the left hand side of the complete booklet pane pair of 10+10 stamps. Since each advertisement was done separately and has noticeable differences in the lettering, you should be able to identify the exact position based on lettering characteristics. From what I have seen, I believe there are least 2 different booklet panes. I don't know the press sheet layout nor all the printing varieties, and leave that to the France experts. The intact booklet pane is not exorbitant in cost, but in my very limited experience, rarely see it come up for sale even though it is not the most expensive of the advertising booklet panes. k

Agreed. Ones in pristine condition are not hard to come by, I assume because most wound up in dealer/collector hands. The CTO's don't show up often, and while I'm sure they exist, I have never seen a genuine postally used one (with correct time of usage). For sure, it's easier to find a clean undamaged "mint" card than a CTO (from my limited observations).

a couple of additions I received. I have a unsed version of the L'Art Vivant, but here's a pair Yvert #283b Type IIA and a #283c Type IIB A with the Agency Compatible verbiage. The difference between the Type A and B is the "c" of 50c - The Type A is less robust and lacks the end 'curl" on the superior (upper) loop. There are several other Roman Numeral Types and it has to do with the pleat(s) under and to the right of her buckle (Type I and II the pleats are the same)

Another- earlier Semeuse ligneé Yvert# 199a Likely Type IIA, but difficult to say with certainty as most of the areas where the different mtraits would show up are cover by the obliteration, but as it appears to be a Telegragh Office in Henday in the Pyrenees in the southwest corner of the country sharing some of the border with Spain and some beach front property on the Atlantic Jaffelin is a well established winery dating back to 1816 and is considered the smallest of the great Bourgogne wine houses!

Received today 30 Semeuse came´´Brun-rouge' BYRRH (Y&T advertising bands #240) The stamp itself is # 360 III and was only printed in booklets. 1937 and I believe the last issue print\ed in this definitive series (the 35 centimes green with 30c overprint was issued in 194-41 #476 ) getting with the advertisement selvedge intact assures me this is a Type III

Stamping has been slow lately, but these arrived in the mail. I have not yet looked up for actual Y&T #. It seems most (if not all) stamps issued in booklets are a different Type, owing to a separate die being used for printingh. Although the traits can be found in stamps with no selvedge/advertisement, having the advertisement 'tab' attached is prrof positive.

Slightly off topic for this thread about ads in booklets, but I thought I would share some tobacco related cancellations that might interest you. As far as I know these cancellations, which I refer to as banner advertising, were used from Yv290 to at least Yv427 (1933 to 1940). There are three tobacco related cancellations that I have come across: (1) Fumez Cigarette Gitane, (2) Fumez les Cigarette Celtiques, and (3) Goutez le nouveax cigare Diplomate. Examples attached. These cancellations show up best on lighter colored landscape stamps where most of the cancellation may be visible. If anyone has any definitive information about the time period that these cancellations were used, I would love to know.

"Goûtez un cigare de choix le Patriota" Nice, a fourth slogan tobacco related... wvgm3 Linda's contribution, gives you a discrete "VARIETY" of the slogan cancel. Linda's are a "continuous roller slogan" machine cancel The others, shown by you and I, are "Trip" machine slogan cancels Just to add more flavour to your collection Example Slogans from my Western Australian Catalogue / monograph...........
