What I collect: Worldwide Stamps 1840-1930

Nice detective work there, Linda and Hugh ( hdm1950). It makes sense now that the stamp could be from Korea but inscribed in Chinese characters rather than Korean ones since it was issued during the Japanese occupation period. And in my zeal to post a response, I forgot to think about reading the characters from right to left.... nice one, Linda! Well, that was fun and something learned, too! Thanks, all. Got any other mystery stamps, Hugh?

I posted this image in the Korean Philately discussion group on Facebook and received essentially the same answer. It is a Pyongyang City Revenue stamp, 5 won.

It is indeed a 5y revenue stamp for Pyongyang, although the exact purpose is unknown to me. It comes in 3 flavors -- pre-liberation (Japanese text in lower panel), post-liberation (Korean printed over Japanese), and redesigned post-liberation (Korean text only in lower panel).
You have the post-liberation with Korean printed over the Japanese -- that is why the printing looks "primitive". It's just jumbled because same color Korean text printed over Japanese text!
The 5y stamp also comes in a variety of color shades ranging from brown to red brown (if you trust my color discrimination, which is risky).
[EDIT: Since I'm not sure if the post-liberation revenue stamp was issued before 1948, not sure if I should call it 5y or 5wn for the currency change near the end of 1947]

If I have time later today, I'll look for the link I had once read that discussed this revenue stamp...

Here is the link from a post ~5 years ago: Revenue Stamps of North KoreaI have to say that they really spiffed up the KSS website last decade. Due to time limitations, I haven't been active there. But it is a great site with a lot of interesting reads. Shameless plug for them, they deserve it!
