EUROPHILEX, BUSINESS DESIGN CENTRE, LONDON. May 2015.
The Exhibition that got away...from me at any rate. However, I managed to get a few bits via friends and the Europhilex website. The latter is a long story with a happy ending and more about that another time. Cinderella items have been few and far between in recent years and what there has been, have been expensive. This time was no different. But such is my passion [weakness] for British Philatelic Exhibition material [non-postal], I decided to take the plunge. I will never be able to decide if it was worthwhile or not, but just the thought of what they are means they will hold a prominent place in my album. Beautiful they are not, but then not every Postage stamps is beautiful..........but we just have to have them !!
The RPSL and BPMA jointly ran a small corner of the Exhibition to reproduce Prints taken from Perkins Bacon dies using the old Press that Jean de Sperati used for his forgeries. The reproductions were on plain white card, set of 4 in a folder. Only 120 folders and sets were offered and even at $75, sold out. I managed to get one but I would much rather have been there to see them being printed ! That's life. For what it's worth, here they are both folder and reproductions.

STAMP SHOW 2000, Earl's Court, London.
Is it not unusual that I begin a British Philatelic Exhibition post with an Issue from Holland ? A Postage stamp at that ! Read on and the reasons will become clear......a connection soon made with the topic in hand. But let's begin in Holland...........
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, the great Dutch artist, has been depicted on many a stamp, and many from his country of birth......Holland. Arguably his most famous work is 'De Nachtwacht' [The Night Watch] painted in 1642 which is on permanent display in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The Museum own the painting and celebrated their Bi-centenary in the year 2000. The stamp above, printed by Enschede of Haarlem, was issued in commemoration of this. The stamp, with the priority strip, was issued on August 1st of that year. On April 14th, the same stamp was issued with the Priority labels separate on the pane/booklet and valued at 100c. The later issue represents a 10c price rise and the addition of 'Priority' strip to differentiate it from the earlier issue !!
But what has all this got to do with Stamp Exhibitions and in particular 'StampShow 2000' ??
At many International Exhibitions, the larger printing houses take stands to advertise their business. Many years ago even the national Exhibitions in the UK were hosts to Walsall, Enschede, Harrisons and the like. At their stand at StampShow 2000, Earl's Court, London in May, Enschede made available a number of sample items, some easier to obtain than others, by all accounts.
Shown below are 3 of those items and I know at least one other exists that I am still searching for. First one is a sample Souvenir Sheet, large and with marginal inscriptions. Second one is the same large sheet with the addition of two Imperforate labels with white border of the same design. Third one is a sheetlet of 10 perforated labels with marginal inscriptions.
All items show Rembrandt's 'De Nachtwacht' !
I am pretty sure these were all produced prior to the April 14th Dutch stamp but have yet to have that confirmed.

THE BRITISH PHILATELIC EXHIBITION 1979
Wembley Conference Centre, London. 14-17 November
To celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the 1929 UPU £1 stamp, a sheet was produced showing the famous British stamp without 'Postage One Pound' inscribed. The sheets were issued in purple and numbered in black on the reverse. They sold for £1 each at the show !! [What else would you sell a One Pound stamp for ?]
Trade samples with a 'SPECIMEN' overprint exist but are scarce.
A scarce Presentation sheet in yellow-orange was produced in limited numbers and these were not available to the public. [Around 650 numbered copies]
In 2010 during my visit to the Festival of Stamps in London I chanced upon a dealer whilst at 'Philatex Extra' at the RHS halls, Victoria. Allan Leverson was the former co-owner of long-time dealer Bridger & Kay and then solo under the similar B & K stamps. I sat at his table for hours over 2 days and he showed me some wonderful Exhibition and strike mail items. Bridger & Kay ran their own service during the UK Postal Strike of 1971. During one of our 'chats' he showed some very nice special edition Exhibition sheets and one of those was a yellow version of this 1979 BPE event ! I had never seen one before and nor have I since but I did not purchase this item because I had already gone [almost] over budget. Now I regret it. It was not listed.

THE BRITISH PHILATELIC EXHIBITION 1978
18-21 October, Seymour Hall, London.
The sheet for this event shows the 1978 Gibraltar 'Anniversary of the Coronation' 25p stamp but without value or Queens Head. Printed by Walsall Security Printers in photolithography. The normal version was on white paper and all 20,000 copies were sold at the show !! Each sheet was numbered in grey on reverse.
A Presentation edition on Olive-Yellow paper was produced but not made available to the public. As in other years for these BPE shows, around 650 numbered copies exist.

STAMPWORLD LONDON 1990 [International Stamp Exhibition]
3-13 May, Alexandra Palace, London.
I cannot forget this Exhibition as it was the event where I caught the collecting bug again after a 27-year break ! I was only strolling around Alexandra Park on a nice sunny May day with friends and then my life changed forever...................
There are many souvenirs for this show, probably the last show with such an array of labels and sheets before the decline set in. It was only years later I discovered them, not on the day I went to visit. Such is life.
For this post you will see the Official show items, others will come up later, those issued by dealers, printers and other such standholders. The following 6 items were all issued in a special pack which sold for £10. The Penny Black and Blue sheets were all printed from the original dies. The 1940 Centenary Essay sheet was also issued in a larger format and affixed to a page in the show programme. I will show this later. The last 2 items are cards depicting the South Kensington Envelope and the Penny Post Jubilee Postcard designs of 1890. All items are of very good quality and, to my eye at least, very attractive.
All sheets and cards were numbered. The total number of packs sold was 3,500.
I can recall that sunny day as though it was yesterday...........maybe it was !

BRITISH PHILATELIC EXHIBITION 1975
29th Oct-1st Nov., Seymour Hall, London.
The BPE celebrated 50 years since the 1925 British Empire Exhibition at Wembley with a sheet depicting Exhibition stamp. The sheet was printed by De la Rue in recess in Deep Blue. They sold for 75p.
In keeping with their 'tradition', a Presentation edition was produced in Emerald Green in limited quantities and these were not available to the public.
Both colours exist with a 'SPECIMEN' overprint which are rarely seen. I purchased my copies from Mr.Leverson, whom I spoke about in an earlier post, whilst at the Festival of Stamps in 2010. I have not seen any copies since !

This is a Proof Sheet for the 1940 Penny Black Souvenir sheet which was sold by the organizers of the Adhesive Stamp Exhibition, held at the Bournemouth Pavilion from May 6th-14th. The Exhibition followed on from the British Philatelic Congress held at the Royal Bath Hotel, Bournemouth from May 3rd-6th. The Congress souvenir sheet also featured a Penny Black reproduction and to save money during wartime, the same plate was used. Both events were organized by the Postal History Society-President Mr.Robson Lowe !
I was looking through my Congress material and spotted a similarity with the PB head and popped in the catalogue and there it was !! I do not have a copy of the Exhibition sheet and did not think about comparing it to the Congress items....silly me !
The good news is that it appears I got bargain because only a small number of proof sheets were printed and none were available to the public. I paid 10% of the market price !!
Londonbus1 P.S. I had not covered the Bournemouth Exhibition because I have, or rather had, no items to show. Now I'll be off in search of the finished sheet !!
[This item and information remains in the 'Unidentified' section also, for the time being. ]

1976 BRITISH PHILATELIC EXHIBITION.
29 Sept-2 Oct, Seymour hall, London
The Souvenir sheet depicts a [then] current Jersey definitive without the Queens Head or value. The issued stamp was a Jersey Arms 20p Definitive. Printed by Courvoisier in Photogravure on Pale grey Paper and numbered on reverse.
The Presentation Edition was printed on Pale Green Paper.
Unknown to me, and unlisted anywhere, is a Multicoloured Press photo S/S that I discovered by chance whilst in the UK recently. It came with a note and together with other Exhibition items. Official Press Photographs [in Black snd White] have been released for a number of shows and are listed and the finding of this one lends me to believe that there is much more out there to be discovered in the world of Cinderellas. I hope this will get a mention in future catalogues.

BOYS AND GIRLS EXHIBITION
Dec 1956-Jan 1957, Earl's Court, London.
This is not a Stamp Show but there were a number of Philatelic Stands within the event, no doubt trying to coax the younger population into a new Hobby. it was maybe a bit easier in those days !! I have to say that I do remember this Exhibition as a child in the early sixties but cannot recall seeing any stamp Dealers/promoters on my visits.
However, a souvenir was produced jointly by Stanley Gibbons and Harrison & Sons the Stamp printers. 2 labels were printed se-tenant in sheets of 72 in Reddish-Violet. One label [Harrisons] shows Cylinder retouching whilst the other [Gibbons] shows a CoGH Triangular and a SG catalogue. They are perforated 14 x 14½ and this was done by Harrisons on the Gibbons stand where they were given away free !!
Not much is free nowadays !!

NATIONAL STAMP DAY STAMP FAIR
May 6th, 1977. Bloomsbury Centre Hotel, London.
In the days, not so long ago, when a National Stamp Day was held on or near the date of the 'birth' of the Penny Black. A sheet printed in Photolithography and showing the GB 1953 Coronation Commems in their original colours was produced for this occasion.

STAMPEX 1965, 19-27 March, Central Hall, Westminster, London.
The Jock Kinneir sheet of Pictorial Definitives has been shown previously so this is the second helping for this event.
A very popular and interesting sheet was produced with a double celebration in mind. It was the centenary of the International Telecommunication Union and the inauguration of the Post Office Tower. Not for the first time in Exhibition souvenirs, it depicts suggestions for an airmail issue for Great Britain. ]What a shame that once again, the Post Office turned a blind eye !!].
Designed by Victor Whiteley and printed by the Freegard Press limited on gummed paper.
Two rather bogus extras exist. A set of the depicted labels can be found cut out and perforated but this is not believed to be of any connection to the show. Likewise the issued sheet with 'ENGLAND WINNERS' overprinted. This is referring to the Football World Cup held the following year so obviously nothing to do with Stampex '65'. I have seen both but do not own them. They are not common.
I have to say that I like the depicted labels and not for the first time an opportunity missed.

1981 AIRMAIL SHOW AND COLLECTORS' FAIR.
12-13 Sept, RAF Museum, London.
A gummed sheet showing a stamp-like label depicting a Bleriot Monoplane against a backdrop of Windsor Castle was produced for this event. Printed in Photolithography, it celebrated the 70th Anniversary of the 1911 First UK aerial Post from Hendon to Windsor. Information is shown in the scroll near the bottom of the sheet.

1899 INTERNATIONAL PHILATELIC EXHIBITION
29th June-5th July, City Art Gallery, Manchester.
Just arrived and although not a complete set, it was nice to have and hold some examples from this 19th century exhibition.
Needs more research but the sail of the Viking ship is inscribed 'Philatelia Ocean Penny Post' from a design by Sydney Turner. Printed by typography and perforated 12½x11½, they also exist Imperf in small numbers. The Imperfs were for use by the organizing committee and not available to the public.

1937 SECOND ANNUAL LONDON STAMP EXHIBITION
16-23 October, Dorland Hall, London.
I came back from the UK a couple of weeks ago with a number of additions to the British Philatelic Exhibition collection, indeed more than I have done for many a year.
The Flying Boat sheetlet of 6 has already been shown. Below are 4 labels in different colours that were printed in Panes of 4 with margins all round. Singles are shown here, I will post up the panes when scanned. The labels depict Mail Coaches, are printed in halftone and are perforated 11.
I was lucky enough to find a season ticket which presumably gained entrance for all days of the show. Good value for 6d !! Also, look at the opening hours. Until 10pm, one would never find that nowadays.

You are cordially invited to...........
THE STORY OF STAMPS EXHIBITION
9-18 April 1958, De La Rue House, Regent Street, London.
An interesting small collection can be formed from this event, with a number of varieties of the listed types to search for.
I have found only the basics thus far plus one scarce Colour Trial which was a thrilling find.
The small Green Commemorative label was printed at the show in sheets of 32, Perf 14. A number of sheets were rouletted and a small quantity were left Imperforate. A few sheets of pre-show Proofs were printed on Pink Paper, Imperf.
The Green label can be found in various shades on both White and cream papers. Also, the Jubilee line around the edges can be found in 2 very distinguished thicknesses. I will endeavor to show this in a future post.
The other 2 labels show a profile of Thomas De La Rue, the left one in dark brown and black by Lithography and the other in Brown and Blue by Photogravure. Both are Perf 12.75x13.
Below is a scarce and very hard-to-find Colour trial which I had never previously seen. It was unlisted in all the early catalogues and only appeared in the latest edition [2010]. It was one of the exciting finds of the trip.
More to come from this event..........

LONDON 1980 INTERNATIONAL STAMP EXHIBITION [Another Addition]
Specially invited guests to the Royal Mail Stand at the Exhibition were given this special Blackprint of the Rowland Hill stamp [SG 1097]. I found this in a box of stuff together with the other Blackprint souvenirs from this event. This particular item has always been hard to find and I seem to get outbid on those rare occasions when seen !!
All part of the fun I guess.

GERMANIA POSTA. 1st GERMAN PHILATELIC EXHIBITION AND CONVENTION
Preston Hall, Stockton-On-Tees, September 5th, 1964
The 2 sheets below were issued, along with a few other items, for this one-day event. Both items shown depict 'Mail by Rail' designs, one with an Overprint. Both items were printed in very small quantities and sold out quickly, and a third sheet was printed in a hurry. Example will be posted when found !
Info is a bit sketchy on this one, and also a bit contradictory between sheets and catalogue. Revised info will be added here when available.
I had never seen these sheets in 12+ years of searching, never seen them offered anywhere. I understand that the short print run and quick sale of stock might be the reason. 5 minutes after arriving at Stampex last month I found both sheets from the first dealer, first box I looked in !!
Go figure !

1950 International Stamp Exhibition, Grosvenor House, London.
The regular sheet of the following type has already been shown, but the Overprinted version has been sought after by me for over 12 years. On the only occasion I found one I was outbid by a country mile.
Well, would you believe it ! Just like those annoying London Buses, you can wait a lifetime and then two come along together. And that's what happened this week with this sheet, I now have two !!!!!!!!!
Waterlow sheet depicting 5 rare stamps in original colours on watermarked paper [with striations]. Overprinted by Red Letterpress 'SAMPLE NOT FOR SALE' for press publicity purposes.

1940 Stamp Centenary Exhibition, Lancaster House, London. May 6-14
This Exhibition came about after the original show scheduled for Earl's Court [May 6-11] was cancelled due to the outbreak of WWII. The RPSL took it upon themselves to organize an event for London for the centenary of the Postage stamp......Britain's own Penny Black ! From the scattered bits of information I have gleaned, it appears the show was a great success.
The sheets below inscribed May 6th-11th may possibly have been printed for the original venture but the Red Cross overprint with error dates is most likely just that. Could it have been that some wrong information was passed on ? A slip of the hand...or pen ? Or maybe some dates were changed and changed again !
One example of the Brown [Chestnut] sheet is known with the dates inscribed May 6th-14th so all those 'theories' above may possibly be just that. I doubt I will ever get to the bottom of this.
The sheets were beautifully produced by Waterlow & Sons and show Tower Bridge, The Penny Black + 'VR' and the Boadicea statue. Perforated 13½, the sheets sold for 6d each at the Exhibition. If that isn't enough, here are the good bits !
Not listed in earlier catalogues were the existence of Proof copies in Chestnut and Green. Only a handful of copies had been seen and no picture was forthcoming in the catalogue or priced. The green copy below I purchased from a guy in Belgium who purchased the item at London 1980 from a long forgotten dealer. It cost me 15 euros at the end of the small bidding frenzy. One of my greatest ever bargains. That was 3 years ago. 4 weeks ago I was browsing on eBay when I chanced upon the 'dinnerlady'. She only sold Dinner services...beautiful plates, tureens and sauceboats, and one Brown Proof sheet from this 1940 exhibition. She had hundreds of listings, all for the Dinner table........except this one Proof sheet ! If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would have thought it was a joke. I bid, I waited, I won !!
The funniest thing was, the item description was spot on perfect. I wrote to her but did not get a reply. Here they are............

To celebrate replacing the pictures in this topic, here are a couple more Imperforate labels from an Exhibition that never was back in 1939. Those who read the TSF Newsletter would have seen 2 examples in the latest edition. The Fourth Annual London Stamp Exhibition was due to take place at Central Hall in London but was postponed due to the War. Sheets of 16 perforated labels were produced and a few survived but are rarely seen. Nothing has been seen regarding the Imperfs. The Labels depict the Royal Navy in action and were most likely printed by Polystamps who had produced some similar-looking propaganda labels during the same year. Londonbus1

I am not a fan of overprinting remainders of Stamps or Cinderellas to turn them into 'new' items for one's Cinderella collection. Indeed it's frustrating for some I guess that good money (in large or small amounts) has to be handed over for such material. But the collectors quest to be complete, or as complete as possible, makes us turn a blind eye to such and similar 'going's on' !! So it was for me recently when I gave up resisting the items shown here and put myself at rest with a dilemma I have had for the last 2 years....actually only a very small dilemma in the general run of things. These 1940 Congress of Great Britain Souvenirs command a pretty decent price and are a very fine example of a Philatelic event souvenir. Why then would a dealer (It must have been a dealer) take some excess stocks of a fine sheet and overprint it 75 years later for a Modern-day Exhibition ?
Now I have written about them and shown them, I can put them into the album and close the book. I can cross off two more items from my wanted list. I am slightly poorer for the purchase of, but satisfied I have overcome that dilemma !!! There will be more to come no doubt.
EUROPHILEX 2015 at the BDC in London celebrated the 175th Anniversary of the first postage stamp, the Penny Black. I missed the event through illness. Now I have a reminder of that !!
