A couple from me today. First off is this one that was postmarked on this day in 1979, in Cannes.
France, 1979. Scott 1680. Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Ecole Centrale Des Artes Et Manufactures. Then last year on this date, an envelope was mailed to me from Kansas City, MO. I always appreciate it when folks use older stamps. And now the cover immortalized on the internet. Perhaps the original sender will stumble across it someday. (I think it was an eBay purchase.)

On this date in 2016, a correspondent mailed me a Frohe Weihnachten greeting from the Wurzburg Briefzentrum.

Hi Mike, and welcome to the forum. You've probably made Steve's day by joining.
Coincidentally, I was just thinking today how few private jets I have, and how I really should correct that.

It's the 21st of November in Arad, Israel. A long forgotten postal clerk cancels this wolfy stamp, but the envelope remains unmailed, instead being passed from collector to collector until the present day. Someday I will mail this one out, for the heck of it. As for as keeping track of future entries: I leave myself reminders in Google Calendar, with the city name and URL of the scanned image.

Here's a nice cancel and set of stamps from this date last year, from the Cherry Hill RP in London, Ontario.

On the early evening of 5 August 1909, President Taft signed into law the Payne-Aldrich Tariff Act. This law was "a bill raising certain tariffs on goods entering the United States." (wikipedia) A side effect seems to have been the production of a number of tobacco related tax stamps, one of which is this cool 1910 snuff stamp. The stamp is overprinted "Fact. No. 4 / Dec. 15th / 1917 / 6th Dist., N.J."
I don't know much about these kinds of stamps, but I am looking forward to learning.

I am assuming that they have a contract with larger companies (e.g. banks or utilities) to buy their used incoming envelopes. Is that right?

I visited the Zymoglyphic Museum near my home in SE Portland today. This is one man's labor of love, an idiosyncratic set of exhibits of art and rogue taxidermy. Quite worth seeing if you are in Portland on one of the few days that it is open. Anyway, the curator has also produced a few fantasy local stamps, "valid for carriage from the museum to a local USPS receptacle." Here are those that were on display. Not really a great photo. But there are better ones on the museum web site. There was also this fun little bit of envelope art. (I don't think you can call it "mail art" as it didn't actually ever go through the mail.) (More general museum photos can be found here - photos.app.goo.gl/Ou8okuVmv4LJkJmG3)

That Krasnoyarsk railway station postman was the very antithesis of a marker monkey. Talk about thorough.

Two for today. In 1958 we were reminded of the Shakespeare Festival, on this card sent from Astoria. The cancel doesn't mention it, but the festival takes place every year in Ashland, in southern Oregon. Then in 2012, I got a postcard from Wegorzewo, Poland.

Is there some method for changing, for example, all the files in a folder that are prefixed with 'AA' to 'BB', without renaming files individually? Go to a command prompt. Change to the directory in which the files are located. Type command ren AA* BB*And there you have it.

I was able to checkout the 2018 1A Scott book from the library and spent hours reading and comparing stamps. All I have to say is WOW, OMG, SERIOUSLY?. And here I thought it was just putting stamps in a book - NOT - it's a whole new world I'm so ready to explore. Yeah, once in a while I talk to my wife about a recent acquisition, or some new thing about postal history that I learned. I was really gratified when she said (more or less), "I had no idea that stamp collecting was so interesting. I'm really glad you got into this." It's great to see such enthusiasm from a new member. Browse around the forum - there are some very cool threads to explore here.

Hi Mick, How did a Portland Oregon guy become a Newcastle United fan? They will be playing Premier League again next season, let's wait and see how they fare. Siem de Jong played for PSV Eindhoven last year, just as his brother Luuk. I believe he still has a contract with Newcastle, so perhaps he'll return to Newcastle in the Premier League. Oh, it is a long family tradition. My mother and father both come from the Newcastle area, and were both ardent supporters. The rest of the family continued the tradition, even when they moved to South Africa. For me, even though Portland has a fine team, it would feel like treason to support anyone other than Newcastle United. Howay the lads!
