Is anyone aware of the normal and any tagging varieties for the 2017 Ashton Potter Coil Flag stamp (Scott # 5159)?
Thanks,
Dave N.

I have some of these. Are there any other differences between the old die and the new die other than the size of the design? (19 x 22.5 mm for the old die and 18.5 x 22mm for the new die) I'd like to make sure I get the ones I have assigned the correct Scott #. For example 172 vs 172a. I see there is quite a bit of difference in Scott catalog value between old and new die varieties.
Thanks...

Hi Blade,
Nice looking pages. I like to get the varieties as you do. Guess I'll eventually have to get busy and create my own pages as you have. I do have some home made specialized pages for the Great American series and last weekend I started to go through what I had for the 1c Dorothea Dix, 1c Margaret Mitchell, and 2c Mary Lyon. Really all I'm doing is using the home made album pages for this series as a holding place for the different varieties I can identify. So many differences with perfs/die cuts, tagging size/brightness, paper brightness, ink color/shade, gum shiny/dull, etc.
Would like to see what your Great American series pages look like. And your Transportation series pages too!

Welcome aboard Blade! USA is my main collecting area and I like all the varieties too.
Would like to hear more about the pages you make yourself and maybe see some examples. Do they have spaces for all the varieties you have?

Thanks for the inputs! Folks here are always so willing to help!
Since I'm ID'ing these for trade purposes, I might just have to give them a dual ID (312 or 346). But I'll check the ones I have and see if they have a date cancel. With checking just the color, I'm aware that the color can change somewhat over the years and due to exposure so not sure I like the idea of ID'ing based solely on color when the color is so close to begin with.

Hi All,
Was cataloging a few Norway stamps and got to the 35 Ore, King Haakon VII from 1950-51 and 1955-57 and came to a halt.
My 2010 Scott catalog says both the 1950-51 (Scott # 312) and 1955-57 (Scott # 346) versions are perf 13 x 13 1/2. Scott cat says # 312 is red brown and the # 346 is brown red. Scott cat says 346 is unwatermarked. Does not say specifically that 312 is unwatermarked, but catalog indication is that it is unwatermarked too.
I have 4 of these puppies but can't tell which ones I have based on the color. Does anyone know of another way to distinguish these stamps? Perhaps a different catalog has better info on these particular stamps that would help to ID them.
Thanks in advance,
Dave N.

Hi all,
Reviving this tread with a couple questions about removing self-adhesives from paper/envelopes. I have a stamp friend that sends me self-adhesives on paper for me to remove for him. I use Rosinol lighter fluid and it works very well most of the time. However, like Ryan stated earlier "Some gum comes off very easily, others (like that on Machins with security cuts) needs a bit of tender care to come completely clean with paint thinner, at least - Rod's Fuelite or something like Bestine (a kind of heptane) might be a better solvent for that gum, I don't know." Those Machins with the security cut outs don't respond as well to the Rosinol lighter fluid. I was wondering if anyone has had any success using some other kind of solvent on the Machins with security cut outs?
I never saw if anyone has tried the Febreeze yet. Has anyone?
Ryan, would you please send me your soakables list?
For self-adhesives, I usually just trim close to the paper and don't spend the time trying to look up if they are "soakable" or not. However, for self-adhesive stamps going into my albums, I will remove them from the envelope paper.
Kind Regards, Dave N.

Welcome aboard Fillerupman!
I too was in The Air Force (1981 to 2001. I also like pre 1940 stamps - prefer engraved works of art on stamps! But, I don't do World Wide complete, just W/W Airmail and do go up to 1950 or so.

Here's something a little different regarding a Philatelic library: I picked up a mystery novel titled "The Chalon Heads: A Kathy and Brock Mystery" by Barry Maitland. (google it) No it is not a reference item or catalog, but it has something to do with stamps. It is currently in my philatelic library, but I picked it up with the intention of passing it along to some fellow "stamp collector" that may be interested in this sort of thing. It is searching for a philatelic library to join somewhere. If there is interested in this book, I'll list it in the giveaway section.

Here's an interesting item I picked up a few years ago. The background is supposed to be white, but this one has tan background. The same tan as the tan part of the booklet. I wonder if anyone has seen others of this 2009 Liberty Bell stamp with this color error/freak...

Just thought I'd share these interesting items.... Looks like a color error. They are supposed to be green, but these two are gray. Color error/omitted? Or possibly bleached? I don't think bleached, cuz the cancelations look okay/not bleached. My 2010 Scott Specialized does not list any varieties...

This thread has inspired me. I have some Israel Air Mail stamps that I need to post to album pages. I think I'll move them up on my mental stamp "to do" list. My specimens are just plain stamps not tabbed nor with selvege.
Thanks for sharing these from way back when...

I sure do like W/W Early Airmail stamps. And after seeing some of the ones you post pics of, I can see why! And I like all the aero history that goes along with many of the Airmail issues too! Thanks!

Here's a late welcome,
I've communicated with you recently thru another stamp group. I didn't realize you were in ND. I lived in Dickinson, ND 3 separate times. So we were almost neighbors. I hope you like this group. I do. Hope to get my 50 posts in soon so I can start trading though.....
