As most have you have seen, I do prefer used stamps. I did set out in September to acquire this stamp. My mother had passed and left us a small amount, and instead of new curtains or something domestic, I wanted to remember her every time I looked at this page. I bid and lost, I bid and lost. Then a collector in Macao was selling his gems one day and this had no bids at $150USD, and now it is here. Although not a crisp cancel, it is light enough to see the splendid work done on this stamp. I think, until the recent era, this is one of the most beautiful stamps ever produced! I know, that is just my opinion.

A very fine design only surpassed in my view by the seahorse issues.

Hi Sudbury!
Congratulations on a very nice find! The £1 Postal Union Congress stamp is also my all-time favorite British stamp...which remains to this day missing in my album. However, I have been looking a long long time for one used on cover, preferably non-philatelic.
A few years ago I got up the courage to bid a substantial (for me) amount of money on a contemporary, oversized registered bank cover with three (3) copies of the £1 P.U.C. which I found offered with an auction estimate quite a bit over what I could afford to pay at the time. I was literally sweating bullets and loosing sleep worrying about possibly spending so much on one single philatelic item!
It was listed with one of the more prestigious auction houses (Spinks or Harmers comes to mind, but I forgot and could be wrong about that). I put in a bid for around 2/3 of the estimate, and hoped for a miracle.
Weeks later, after the auction ended, I checked the prices realized. The cover sold for about four times the estimate, if I recall, around US $8,000.
Hope springs eternal; for now I will just admire the beautiful stamp from afar!

jimwentzell, wow, that is shocking to realize that much. I can't recall ever seeing 3 on a cover so it must have garnered some attention. I usually like to buy old albums and collections, hours of fun and always looking for something I need. I agree, spending a lot of money on one stamp has always made me nervous! I have to sell what I don't collect now, my office was shrinking!
