What I collect: GB Unmounted mint & Machin definitives Q.E.II Used commemoratives

In a few months time the coronation of a new king will take place here in U.K. As a long time collector of GB postage stamps, my purchase of new issues from Royal Mail will sadly come to an end when the final stamp featuring Queen Elizabeth is issued. Maybe I will purchase the first issues featuring King Charles III. My current collection consists of unmounted mint stamps from the 1800's onwards. So what to do now. I've decided to start from the beginning again (almost), starting a USED collection of GB stamps. The following scans show the first attempts I have made with the new (used) collection. I began with mounting some decimal stamps starting around 1970. I obtained some templates for the pages from the internet & began to cut out some old stamp stock cards to use as mounts, attaching them to the pages using a glue stick. The majority of used stamps I have accumulated so far have been soaked from old damaged first day covers therefor they are in good/fine used condition.

I've decided to start from the beginning again (almost), starting a USED collection of GB stamps. Best of luck. I recently received a shipment from a British auction house. It had several stamps on it. NONE where cancelled.
You might have to go to the PO and ask them to cancel the stamps for you.

My stamp collecting recently has been slow for various reasons, (mainly due to renovations on an old Victorian house), started 12 months or so ago. Anyway having started a Q.E.II used commemorative collection a while ago I then ran out of green coloured A4 size paper. Found 1 sheet today so got the scanned stamps mounted, from 1974.

I note a number of gaps in the pages you showed . I have recently been given twoGB accumulations from 1970s to mid 1990s give me a list by SG numbers of your blank spaces , maybe I can supply a number of the gaps as freebies from these lots . if only to prove that Aberdonians are not all mean. 😀 regards Alex. Well as far as stamp collecting goes, yesterday & today have been brilliant. One of my neighbours who is an avid GB collector, knocked on my door with a stock book chocked full of GB commemoratives (Q.E.II), plus some Machins. All the commemoratives were used, he said take what you want for your used collection. Great, I have just finished sorting through the stock book, taking out better copies than the ones I already have. So I'm just about to print off some more pages & start mounting more stamps. Also a few days ago vikingeck (Alex) was also very kind to offer me more used stamps, so A big thank you to him too. Since starting this post earlier this evening I've been out to see a Simon & Garfunkel tribute band @ my local theatre, they were excellent. Only had chance to add a couple of more pages since getting back home.

I have a generous accumulation of GB commemoratives of mine own that I’m anxious to start sorting. But, it’s overwhelming! Any advice on figuring what year these are from? There are many that do not have a year in the design that helps identify them.

What do you have for GB catalogue Dave ? The SG “ Concise” or “collect British stamps” are both fully illustrated in colour and second hand volumes are not expensive compared to the bulkier Scott catalogue which only has limited illustrations.
I see a 2009 edition for £3 and a 2015 version starting at £1. On eBay at the moment.

That may be part of my problem. My only GB catalog is a pdf version of the 2013 Scott catalog. I use that and stampworld.com to identify anything. I’ll guess I’ll keep with that approach and a dose of patience. Thanks for the advice!

There are many that do not have a year in the design that helps identify them. Lots of replies to your question daveg28 I'm using the Gibbons Concise GB. There is another way (which is not fully accurate) if you have a full set of each. The lowest price on each stamp is usually the 2nd class rate for a given year. There are lots of backdated yearly postal costs lists on the internet giving year & 2nd class rate per year.. daveg28 Just adding the following link, this website lists all the stamps & dates back to the 1890's along with details & graphics etc. www.collectgbstamps.co.uk/default.asp

Think they’ll just use Charles’ profile going forward? Would seem to be the easiest transition.

Another page completed which I particularly like. For anyone not familiar with the London Bridge types, the second one is re-engraved.

Although I have printed off my album pages up to 2003, the batch of used stamps I had accumulated is now limited to various odd items. I have been working on filling spaces with Machins & other backdated items i have missing from my main collection of GB's. Only 1 more completed page to scan from the used collection.
