I think this is a Revenue/Fiscal stamp- but I have no references for this particular area and not a country I that I can say I have much more than a small handfull of miscellaneous stamps. Still- it was fun to engage in a round of "what is it?" Your hunch is right stainlessb ; definitely Finnish. I know absolutely about nothing about Finnish tax stamps, but this has to be one; bilingual Finnish and Swedish, denominated in pre-Euro Markkaa. But someone else has to push this noodle further across the plate.

Finally found a nice 1 Mark coat of arms (type III Indentation) with most of the teeth intact in a recent collection purchase. BUT is it genuine? I’m pretty sure it is, but I welcome opinions. I posted this ginormous image so that the details were enlarged.

philatelia - that's a lovely stamp indeed. I don't want to say whether authentic or not, I have no relevant reference. But I would not be surprised if Morten classicalstamps can offer a knowledgable opinion

Thanks, Jon, blaamand . I’m really pleased with this find. I think this makes a complete set of all the major variety coat of arms, plus there are several variants. I now have lots of material to study and I swear I am hooked on classics. It’s funny, but I sometimes wonder if reading the posts here from the other classical collectors has changed my interests. I know I enjoy those threads even if I don’t collect that particular country. Anyways, I compared it to all the forgery types on Stamp Forgeries, stampforgeries.com/forged-stamps-of-finland/ (Love that site!) and I couldn’t see any obvious spurious signs, but I’m definitely NOT an expert. I have no idea about the cancel, but I believe this issue doesn’t have a premium for used over mint so there wouldn’t be much incentive to forge a cancel.

Good day. Although I do not find any reason to think this stamp is authentic, I cannot find anything wrong with it. However, reading some of the other posts no one has mentioned pen cancels. Currently it sits as a space filler

My "latest" Michel (1994/95) lists three categories for used stamps of the 5 Kop.: 1.) post-cancel only DM 7000.- 2.) post-cancel + pen-cancel DM 5000.- 3.) pen-cancel only DM 3500.-
I do not own that stamp, but have seen many in auction-catalogues. The pen-cancel on your stamp looks to me like typical for this issue. That does not mean anything in regard wether the stamp is genuine or not.

Helsinki city post in 1878. Clear cancels like this are so tough to find. I'm delighted to find one merely missing a few perfs and the month. They obviously didn't care; these always are missing the month.
The museum collection is useful for reference, but I suspect it's real function--like all museum quality collections--to make mere mortals feel amateurish.

Four Finland issues of 1911-1917, when the region was a duchy within the Russian Empire: Scott #78 A16 5p green; #79 A17 10p rose; #80 A16 20p deep blue; and #81 A18 40p violet and blue. They are from a page in one of my Dad's Schaubek stock albums and he had them in a row with a relatively high (1957) price of $3.05. Two stamps in the row are gone, and I can only wonder what they were. The Scott online catalogue lists current values for the used stamps shown as $.40, .50, .50. and .40, respectively, although there are perf. 14 1/4 x 14 3/4 versions worth a few hundred times more.
