What I collect: GB Unmounted mint & Machin definitives Q.E.II Used commemoratives

.I was faced with a similar budgetary dilemma with my GB collection, I was chasing good to fine used early GB and getting stuck. Looking for a new direction I found Denmark fitted my needs for an area to hunt , nice issues , interesting variety in the definitives both of the 19th century and the 1940s….engraved designs and nice but not too numerous modern issues. Switzerland also might be a country worth looking at . Thanks for the advice vikingeck funnily enough Denmark was one of my considerations.

Sounds like a "Collecting Goal / Plan" to me and might I suggest moving your post to this thread - Collecting Goals / Plan. I think it would be a welcome addition to the discussion drblade :-)
What ever the plan, I wish you success...
Have fun and happy collecting!
Thank for the advise stanley64 I wasn't aware of the thread you mentioned otherwise I would have posted there. As I was asking a question??? I posted here, sorry. Regards drblade

You could convert your GB collection to a “dual” collection and try to find postally used copies for each issue. OR - if you’re interested in a country with a reasonable number of issues, Bermuda is very doable and has an interesting, varied history with ship’s mail, censored, etc not to mention being part of the omnibus issues. The key plate issues are rich with varieties. I’m fond of hunting for cancels from the different small post offices as much of the issues are actually postally used. Thanks for your comments philatelia Bermuda has been mentioned twice, so that's a thought. I already have most of the GB used which I am currently finishing adding the last few years to. Q.E.II commemoratives that is. Whichever country/region I decide on I'm leaning towards used stamps. I have always enjoyed viewing cancellations/postmarks & the like on worldwide items.

Just giving this thread a bump to let drblade and everyone else know that I have merged your new thread ( Moving On) into this one, since after the suggestion from stanley64 , you stated that you would have posted here in the first place if you had been aware of the existence of this thread. Back to the subject at hand, I see that you are getting some excellent suggestions as to new countries/regions to consider collecting. If you do choose to go with Denmark, I would also suggest adding the Danish West Indies to that, as it is an interesting former colony with a tidy number of issues to collect. It also has some fascinating postal history, frame varieties in its definitive stamps, forgeries to avoid, and some nice Cinderellas. Just a thought....

I have just been checking the list of lots of my next local auction which is coming up in a couple of weeks time. One of the lots just happens to be Denmark with Danish West Indies items included. So definitely one for viewing before the bidding starts.

I feel like it might change weekly, depending on how my brain is functioning, but I managed to write out a bunch of collecting goals in a journal a while ago, and I still agree with most of them. USA: All major Sc# within reasonable pricing to 1951 (Used primarily till 1869, then mostly mint where price works out) (Airmail as only B-O-B, don't really have interest in the others, and no CSA) USA: Postmark Calendar of the 1851 3c (Sc# 11/11A) USA: All First Day covers listed in Mellone's for the 1934 8c Zion National Park issue (Issued on September 18, which is my fiancees birth day) USA: All of the non-experimental Barr-Fyke & Barry machine cancels on cover. USA: Covers from each PO in Monroe and Onondaga County in New York. (Including HPO, RPO, etc) Canada: All the Unitrade numbers for the Small Queens that aren't unique/super scarce or rare. Attempting Mint, but some are out of my price range. (Including major re-entries, not including every precancel style.) Canada: Postmark Calendar of the 1c (Sc#35) or 3c (Sc#37/41) Small Queen Canada: All the major Sc# for the Large Queens issue Mint or Used. (Not picky with condition, I love the design, but these are pricey.) Denmark: All the major AFA# Used (within reasonable pricing) Denmark: Plate reconstruction of one or more of the following bicolored ore issue (Sc#31, 32, 33, 34, 50, 51, 52) Switzerland: Work on plating the 1900 UPU issue (Sc#98-100 + 101-103), maybe do paper studies as it's one of the few areas not explored for the stamp? Austria: Figure out what I want to do with cancels on the Franz Joseph issue 1867-1880, I don't have a plan or the literature on this issue. (yet!) I also want to own a lot of the important literature on these subjects, I have a large spreadsheet of books to acquire, and what I already have, but this is a philately forum, and not a bibliophile forum, so maybe that can be posted somewhere else.

It's good to see this topic getting some more activity. After much thought, I've settled on the following for my own short term activities.
Austria/Hungary to 2008, Bosnia and Herzegovina to 1918 - Scott major numbers per Scott specialty albums, up to $200-250 max CV; Minor varieties (as encountered) on quad or stock pages.
Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Slovakia to 1949 using SG and/or Michel. May add Yugoslavia to the list. Vario pages.
Switzerland to 2000. Scott major/minor numbers (excluding singles from souvenir sheets), up to $100 max CV. Vario pages.
For my worldwide collection, I have decided to simplify and focus on face different stamps using the SG Stamps of the World catalogue as a guide. I found that I was spending a lot of time measuring perfs, checking watermarks, trying to identify paper differences and that this lessened my enjoyment of this part of my hobby. I have enough of that in my other, more focused collections. By eliminating the "work" aspect, I find I am approaching this collection with more energy and interest. Mint or used. Damaged ok if I don't have a better copy. No CV limits, but I will mainly be adding stamps as they come along initially. Purchased a few on and off paper kilo mixes to play with for this collection. Stockbooks.
This should keep me occupied for a while. I just finished creating my wantlist for Switzerland, and am planning to create ones for Austria, Bosnia, and Hungary next.

Great stuff! I have enjoyed reading the input to the thread; some of the goals, plans or perhaps even philatelic dreams are quite specialised and fitting of a philatelist :-)
Even if the goal is small, e.g. add ten new stamps to the collection each month, study one stamp in the collection each day, etc., the rewards of having specific goals in mind only adds to the joy of our hobby as anyone that has earned a Scout's merit badge can attest...
Have fun and happy collecting!

I collect worldwide, and my basic limitation is based on condition and cost
Used to ~1914 unless mint is cheaper than used (note, I do tend to have a bias towards mint, but most classical-era mint stamps are beyond my budget) Mint hinged ~1914-~1970 with exact ending transtion date depending on the country in question Mint never hinged ~1970 to present
Where I fall down the rabbit hole is varieties - especially now that I have built up my library of regional specialized catalogues. But that just makes the thrill of the chase more fun, hunting down all the perforation/watermark/shade variants on a stamp to get a complete (or as complete as the catalogue data provides) picture of the history of the production of a particular stamp issue.
Currently now I am spending most of my free time working with Colnect, which I feel is not only a way for me to "give back" to the broader philatelic community but in the end also helps me personally to organize my current and future collections in terms of what is out there to collect, what I already have, and what I might want to get in the future.

This is a question I've been trying to answer for a few years. I've inherited two collections, one from my grandmother who's collection was pre 1930's. Since then I've been adding post 1930's stamps to build the collection to current dates which I soon discovered is impractical. I don't like albums and hinges so I'm using stock books. A complete set of Scotts International Albums might be the solution, but not affordable for me, and again I don't like hinges. Her collection covered several dozen countries, many that no longer exist. I want to keep her collection intact, and picking only a few countries to expand on. Which ones? Japan, Austria, Canada, Australia maybe?? And then I see several thousand stamps in a bin from Spain, Netherlands, France, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, and Hungary. OMG, it seems like Hungary issues a new stamp every week!!! What to do??

OMG, it seems like Hungary issues a new stamp every week!!! What to do?? What to do? I decided what to collect mostly based on one simple thing - which stamps did I most enjoy working on? If a country feels overwhelming or boring to you then that’s a great clue to skip it. Like many of us, I used to be a worldwide collector, too. Back in the 1980s, I was trading with a nice man, ummm, I think his name was Reverend Munson. Anyways, at the time the one area I definitely decided that I would collect was Scandinavia. He agreed to take all of my stamps from countries that I decided to drop in exchange for his Scandy duplicates. Over a period of a few years, my list of countries collected kept getting shorter and shorter until I reached the point where I had a manageable number of countries. I recently cut 5 more collections to allow me to concentrate my time and funds even further. My point is this; try taking a list of all the countries and start crossing out ones that you don’t really enjoy all that much. Sometimes it’s easier to start from the other end and keep eliminating possibilities - like a big sports tourney such as March Madness - until you hit the final four or 16 or whatever. That also forces you to consider all of them at least once. FYI Here’s my list of keepers; Ireland, Scandinavia, Vatican, Japan, Austria, Bermuda, Venezuela, Canada, and USA. Still a big list but doable. I decided to keep one from several major Geographic area - one Commonwealth, one Asian, one Latin American, etc. Canada and USA because hubby is Canadian and we live in USA - Simple proximity mostly. All those little British areas are fun, but opted for only one. Anyways, this ties in with the original post asking us to consider our goals. I think I’ve reached the point where I can’t cut further except perhaps in setting cut-off dates for collections. I think I’ll keep going as is, but stop collections when they started issuing self-adhesives. (Ick!) Looking forward to watching where philately takes you, drmellow ! Remember, you can always change your mind.

Post by drblade on Sept 15, 2023 16:39:25 GMT
Since my original post here on the 28th of August, I think (sometimes anyway) it needs a follow up. After reading advice ref the post, from other members, thanks, I have decided, for the time being, to continue with my GB collecting. I need to finish the Q.E.II used commemoratives of which I now have most of the singles to date. Then I will concentrate (more often) on finishing the Q.V. part of my collection which is the weakest era. Having spent 5 hours yesterday viewing auction lots from my local auction being held tomorrow, the decision was made to hold off on any other collecting interests/areas for now. The old saying Jack of all trades master of none!! springs to mind.

Drblade. Looking at the criteria you mentioned in your post you might consider AAT (Australian Antarctica) or FSAT=French & Antarctic Territories, and British Antarctic Stamps. I have learned quite a bit from working with part of the world's stamps. Also, if you want to look for a country that does not have a ton of stamps some South American countries would fit the bill.
Just my suggestion. Nick

Plan for collecting..................mmmmmmmmm............ wish I had one. I have too many interests to focus primarily on one country or one type of stamp. If I had a gun pointed at me the best I could come up with is things I shop for first. My family comes from Italy so that is a big part of my collection. I like arctic and Antarctic themes. SO BAT,FSAT, BIOT, Ross Island (see I said I maybe too many interests. I really like a lot of south American stamps. I got involved with Ukrainian stamps when the war started. Now Israel is getting my attention.
So, to be honest all I can say is I wish I had a plan!!!!!

Plan? plan? ooooohhhhhhhh Plan! I collect what interests me and enjoy the time I spend relaxing with my stamps. I have a Worldwide collection of stamps and no clue how it got this big. I acquired stamps so many ways I don't even recall where they all came from. If you are interested in history, geography, politics , people, places, things newandold and in between there is a stamp that attracts gadflies like me.
Relax and enjoy whatever you are doing no one is out there to judge you. (Except maybe your kids) when after a collector passes and the heirs are like "what do I do with this?"

Interesting question.
Plans are easy to do, and can work towards a goal.
I have a few for this year.
First I want to sort out all the new world stamps that I won in a Facebook auction. Lots of work there, as it is a dipper box about 3/4 full. Yes, there are many duplicates, but that is fine. Also many new countries I did not have in the past, but now I can explore new areas.
Second I want to add to my American collection and start a new album I downloaded.
Third I want to expand my new Canadian album to add many new stamps, and I am also looking at doing a new Canada Queen album that I saw online.
But my main goal if nothing else, is to get my kids more interested in stamp collecting, as they were introduced a year or so ago to it, and they enjoyed it.
When I was younger, my goal was to get a full Canadian and American collection from the 50's to the present, but that worked to a point.
