This seemed the most appropriate place to post this- Found today re-arranging and consolidating (I still have a large amount of stamps (boxes, envelopes, albums, etc., that I've barely glanced at)- this reminded me of stamps I used to see in Reader's Digest-

Stan stainlessbTake a break from FRANCE - do an Auction with your USA stamps or other Country that you have put aside for years (I am certain you have quite an accumulation LOL) I do that when I am tired of a Country - I go to something easy and cheap, like Mongolia....(inventory finished with more than 400 stamps and did not buy any LOL)...which has no CV relationship with US stamps ...why I am not speaking about "dups" giveaway..... René you see, we are the only ones active on TSF....you live - 4-5 hours in California and I live in the middle....from Europe - Terri must be there as well as polarbear

I think that if is probably worth spinning Savings Stamps (saving up money) into its own thread. I see then as quite distinct from Trading Stamps, saving on your shopping. Anyway, until then, here is a nice selection of related ephemera: Savings booklets and and advertising card.

I showed some Swedish Scout Savings Stamps in an earlier post. Now I can show the full sheet from 1934, which recently came into my collection ! Can anyone spot what looks like (at least) a couple of constant flaws ? Presence of a small circle in the second a of "sparmärke" on the third stamp in the first line. Is it constant?

I must have missed this and now I cannot recall what I was referring to. I hope I still have the sheets and singles to check again. I must be getting old.

REDIFFUSION. British company Rediffusion were born out of the British Electric Traction Company (BET) who laid Electric cables for Trams during the Victorian era. They were formed in 1928 initially to run cables to households in the London area for better radio, and later television, reception. rediffusion.london/a-short-historyI remember the logo appearing on the TV set when I was a kid. One of my first memories of the old black & white TV's. What I don't remember are the savings stamps. I cannot find any mention of them in my books, magazines or files and online the info is patchy at best. I have not seen any example of the stamps in a savings book but they must exist........if they were issued at all. Rushstamps were once selling the 'set' of stamps shown below and stated they were from 1971. I have same, supposedly from the Rediffusion archives, which I won at a CSC auction for considerably less than the Rushstamps offer. They include the 'issued' stamp in a pair, tete-beche pair, a miscut, an Imperf, a proof pair and a 'SPECIMEN' overprint (handstamp) I wonder if they ever made it into the homes of those TV and Radio users to help pay for their service ? Possibly not. Londonbus1

While looking for a box of modern mint stamps I use for postage I came across a box i don't remember ever looking in before! It once belonged to a co-worker of my uncle, who inhereited his sfriends tamps and I in turn inherited my uncles collection. There are some other items I will post elsewhere that piqued my interest enough to pull out. The box actually contained a number of letters from abroad with the letter included from people traveling (on vacation I suppose...all seem to be empoyee's at Bank of America) United Treading Stamp- i found an offered book of this oniline from 1953 Alameda California, The Lincoln Market, which was only a few blocks from my grandmothers house (so it is entirely possibly these may have been hers, however, at about that time my uncle worked for Bank of America (pretty much his entire career) and he was at the Alamdea branch on Webster Street... about 3 blocks down from the cross streets of Webster and Lincoln. This is stuck to what looks like a cartoon cut out from a magazine, which looks like it has to do with a gag from a drive-in in las Vegas.... I doubt I will try to separate as this sheet has much of the gum undisturbed so just for a smile!

Ok here is a sample of what is in "weird" Hi jdtrue66 , those are an interesting lot for sure. In particular I like the Tropical Fish Laboratories Trading Stamps and I'm quoting those images here in the Trading Stamps thread. We need more examples here Thanks for showing, Daniel

The US Look magazine (1937-71) produced these savings stamps (and other types) to use towards Magazine subscriptions. Probably 1950's. I will try to find a full sheet, it's around here somewhere ! "See the world through the pages of Look" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look_(American_magazine)

It's been a long time but I can say that it appears to be a constant flaw as I have now checked other copies of the same stamp. The same applies to the 'fat 'e'' loop of the last 'e' of sparmärke (bottom row). There might be others. All good fun. Londonbus1

Examples of UK TV Licence savings stamps which have now been phased out in favour of a special savings account. But old savings stamps are still redeemable with TV Licencing.

"When card is full take it to your grocer and collect 5/- in cash or goods" ! The good old days, when Savings Stamps were printed and perforated onto the sides of packets of Tea, in this case Brooke Bond. There are many different printings, most that I know of with similar design. Tea anyone ?

Just like the British TV License Savings Stamps, so it was for the telephone too. BT (British Telecom) offered customers savings books which could be filled with savings stamps of various denominations to be redeemed for payment of their phone bill !! So, something else to collect for die-hard (Cinderella) Philatelists !! The good news is, they no longer exist but were phased out many years ago.

National Savings Stamps 1949 (British) A really nice set of progressive proofs for this issue including a Specimen version. Featuring the thrifty squirrel. Your set goes towards proof that the following catalogue ID is incorrect ? What say you? "Printing was in red-brown, green and black inks"........Incorrect They have missed out a colour pass........perhaps "Venetian red" or "Carmine", maybe "red" The Squirrel has two shades to his fur coat "Take 5" Unable to post images right now.
First multicoloured Savings stamp to be issued (Issue 15 ) Printed at H M S O press, at Alperton Perf 14 Watermark (a) sideways left W5 "SO and Crown" (b) sideways right Artist : Percy Metcalf (1895-1970) Stamp introduction : 3rd October 1949...Phase out 28th February 1953 Percy Metcalf at work (The Lion of Industry) link

rod222, yes definitely 4 colours. As you have previously suggested in another thread the first 4 are actually colour separations. I'm not very good with colour names but stamp 5 must be a combination of the two colours used for the squirrel. Stamp 6 must be the stamp as issued. Elsewhere, someone is selling a similar set for 5 times the price that I paid but included stamps on bright white paper. The watermarks are interesting too. Thanks for the info, Daniel

Interesting to see where this thread has gone more than ten years later! Here's an Irish Post Office Savings Stamp. From what I can find it was used in a program to help kids save money called Saving with Cyril. Cyril is a squirrel, and I guess squirrels are good at saving their nuts.
