Stay tuned - today’s identification challenge will be posted at 12pm EST to give folks in later time zones a chance to be first. I’ll try to alternate times a bit every day.
Today’s challenge was a very welcome and helpful recommendation. If you can think of a stamp that would be a good challenge, send me a picture or post and tally the results yourself or however your little heart desires. If you want to add an extra challenge on any given day, go for it! It’s all about having fun!
One of these days we’ll stump the pros!
See ya in 4 1/2 hours …

Who is this lady with the Mona Lisa smile? What country is she from? Stamp suggested by rednaxela - thanks Red! Let’s do this to give other’s a chance; Answer via private message to me only - once we have THREE ANSWERS, I will cut and paste and post the answers on the board noting who was first. Good luck!

Only two answers to the last entry! A bit more of a toughie, eh? But we have a tie - Rod rod222 replied; Test stamp It is a Japan Almanac and schoolbooks 1882 -1884 typographed affixed to caledars comes in 2 sizes 22.5mm x 25mm and 2.5mm x 8.5mm
The dark side of the globe should be bottom left for orientationBut tomiseksj provided a catalog citation, too, so I think it’s a bit of tie. Way to go, fellas! Sorry I was 'AFK' (away from keyboard) for a few days, but yes, I would've been the 3rd answer. I've got a few examples around here somewhere. Organizing my Japanese revenues will be one of my goals in retirement. However, my first goal in retirement will be to actually retire! lol Btw, philatelia, what a great idea for a discussion thread!!

I decided to take a nap and woke up to 6 messages! Go team! The first answer was from hdm1950 , Hugh in Toronto This one appears imperforate so it would be a Bosnia newspaper stamp, Scott N1. Scott calls it Bosnian girl.
Then Jeff in Texas, JeffS Bosnian Newspaper stamp, Woman is the wife of the Bosnian emperor. We were never formally introduced so I don’t know her name.Next Michael in Israel Londonbus1 said; 1913 Bosnia & Herzegovina Newspaper stamp Then Rene renden in New Brunswick said; Jugoslavia Sc #1L17 "Bosnian Girl" 1918 2h ultramarine - found beginning Scott #s for Yugoslavia‘Then, Salentin, salentin Werner in Germany said, Another easy one:K.K.Militärpost Bosnien-Herzegovina Michel.no.85, 2 Heller newspaper stamp, issued Oct.15th,1913.And while I was typing this Alex in Scotland added; vikingeck Hi Terri , recent postings have appeared when I am not at my desk or just too lazy to trot upstairs to check catalogue details. I believe this young lady is from the AustroHungarian territory of Bosnia Herzogovina just before the turmoil that became WW1 and the fragmentation of that cumbersome multi lingual empire.GOOD WORK STAMP SLEUTHS! be warned - tomorrow’s mystery stamp will be sneaky!

Today’s identification challenge is a bit sneaky - heh heh .
I’ll bet that you don’t think folks can identify a stamp just by looking at the back - well our forum pros will prove that wrong! So here is the pic and the currency unit is “1/“ One what you may ask? Well that would make it too easy.
Edit that currency should read “1/-“
Please Send your guess to me in a private message to me so as to not give away the answer. Good luck!
sorry that this back is a bit yucky- I don’t have many of these to pick from as this is not one of the areas I collect (a little bonus hint). This stamp could probably use a bath in some of that sunlight soap!

You’re getting warm - but note my clue “1/- “ can you narrow it down a bit more?
I’ll check back after I get a bit more sleep. I keep waking up at 3am.

Great Work Team! All of this information from the BACK OF THE STAMP. Isn’t it amazing the depth of knowledge in this group? The first to narrow it down was rednaxela It is the 1 shilling stamp, Scott # 67.Then JeffS wrote; New Zealand Scott 67 red brown
Before that vikingeck , rod222 , rednaxela and JeffS correctly identified New Zealand and the series, but Red was the first to give the correct catalog number. Rod identified the plate position; sunlight soap New Zealand 1893advertising stamps second setting Bottom pane of stamps First row of stamps 9th from left hand side
Alex provided this historical comment; That “Adson” the nearest the Kiwi can get to an acronym, as in “Ads on the back of the stamp” was trialed for a couple of years in the 1880s New Zealand. Found in various colours, purple, blue, green adverts for soap, chocolate cocoa waterproofs etc can ask for a substantial collection. The ads are found on several different value stamps of which the 1d and 2d Queen Victoria side face are the most common
Red also provided this pic, saying Here is one sheet showing how they were issued. compliments of Campbell paterson catalogue:

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Well I slept through today’s mystery New Zealand stamp. I would have been stumped anyway. I have seen the advertising before from other countries but had forgotten about these. The last thing I thought I would be doing this morning was to be checking out Queen Victoria’s backside but there you go. I have this set used but only one with the back printing. It is a 2 pence Scott 62.

Good morning Stamp Sherlocks! I waited to post this a few hours later than previous days - trying to vary the times. I’m still giggling about Hugh’s comment that yesterday’s challenge had him looking at Victoria’s backside - too funny! Thanks for that, hdm1950 ! Teehee No new suggestions have arrived so I’ll use another of mine. Just message your guesses! 😉 Good luck, you clever folks!

Without divulging the Stamp ID I think this one is probably a forgery Philatelia Originals were typographed, this looks like Litho? Any typo "dents" on back of paper? Hmmm the rest of the error points, seem to pass muster. Maybe genuine after all !

I’ll check back later today to see if there are any other responses to today’s identification challenge. We do have one correct answer though. I’ll reveal the daily Sherlock later today, too.
Can anyone comment on Rod’s thoughts about forgery? What do you think? Yea? Nay?
The few responses has me wondering - was this too easy? Too hard? Or just at this time of day folks are busy. No worries! It’s all good.

Yay! We have three answers; First and winner of the right to wear the deer hunter cap for a day; hdm1950 Early German Rural Postage Due, Scott lists it as a back of book to Baden under Rural Postage Due Stamps as IJ1
Here’s your hat, Hugh! And our next correct answer was from jaysee who said; I believe your latest mystery stamp is a Baden Postage Due stamp, first issued 1863, SG D39.
And then - despite just having major surgery and on pain meds - super tough guy djcmh posted an answer and a link That is one of the two varieties of Baden's postage due stamp of 1863
colnect.com/en/stamps/list/variant/326597
And JeffS replied at the same time as my post! He added; Hi, fairly easy, Baden postage due. I knew it was a German state issue but I had to do some catalog - online searching. Does that count? (Terri says - Why sure it does ) Way to go team TSF!

For comparison,my set:
Mint they are affordable.Used are quite expensive. The 12 Kreuzer is listed by Michel in used condition at € 60.000.- and on letter € 100.000.-. However in 2018 a 12 Kr. on a small piece was sold for less than € 30.000.-.

Oh my gosh - this one had some of our pros scratching their heads, but never fear! Victory was achieved! The hat today is awarded to djcmh who correctly identified this as; Venezuela - Carupano provisional of 1903colnect.com/en/stamps/stamp/1064057-Car%C3%BApano-_CARUPANO-Venezuela So here is your trophy hat! Two more bright minds also solved the mystery; rednaxela said My suggestion: Venezuela, local stamp for the port of Carupano, Scott #13 / A4. Here a picture of the complete set I found on the internet: JeffS was determined to solve the mystery and like a Texas Ranger “always gets his man” ; Morning again, this was bugging me. So I went to Venezuela and found Local Stamps for the Port of Carupano, issue of 1903, Scott number 12 with a catalog note that dangerous counterfeits exist. Now back to bed for me!And yours truly here will reward herself because she stumped our mastermind, rod222. Hmmm so as a reward, I think I’ll put a bid in on that collection LoL 😂 Ooooh good thing it’s tough to stump these folks or this could get expensive for this gal. Haha. But as my saying below says, better classic stamps than designer shoes! Yes?

Well we have three answers! Today’s hat goes to super sleuth rod222 who answered almost before the bits cooled down on their way through the ether. He notes; Denmark State railways DSB = Danske Statsbaner
Parcel Freight stamp 1970's 500 ore Parcel with Tire Tracks Exists with 12 values
The trains chugged along unnoticed for a few hours then two answers popped in almost simultaneously. Hugh, hdm1950 , was second, correctly deciphering the DSB I do know it is a Danske Statsbaner (DSB), or Danish State Railways issue.
Then djcmh shared this info and link. Danish Railways Parcel Fee Stamp from 1963
colnect.com/en/stamps/list/country/2023-Denmark_Private_Post_Offices/year/1963/emission/10-Parcel_Post/not_ignored/DJCMH WELL DONE! Thanks for playing! Check back tomorrow for a puzzler. If you like the daily challenge, toss us a ‘like’, eh? Each like makes us smile!

WOW - I got up too early - went back to bed and HOLY MACARONI I have SEVEN correct answers! It makes sense though as this was an actual POSTAGE stamp, not a Cinderella, Revenue, Local or phantasy stamp, etc. So here is a list of the Sherlocks who correctly identified this stamp. I won’t cut and paste their responses as they were fairly uniform. So in order received; First response and the Sherlock who has earned the right to wear THE Hat is … drumroll vikingeck . AND for our amazing Scot - a special hat with clan Walker tartan and crest! (Gosh I’m glad you have a good sense of humor, Alex, lol!) The other correct responses in the order received were; rednaxela hdm1950 salentin djcmh rod222 JeffS WELL DONE TEAM! And don’t forget to “like” the contest posts - momma likes her ‘sugar’ lol!
