Finishing up the "A" countries, today a few pages from The Azores. As with most Potuguese Colonies a great many including all the 19th century stamps were those of Portugal that had been overprinted for use in the Azores. I just started collecting Portugal in earnest about three years ago. It is one of those European countries that is usually pretty weak in most WW collections. The reasons for this are numerous including higher overall cat prices and a great depth of material with a higher learning curve required, very similar to Greece. I'm extremely happy with how this collection has developed and I'm getting close to completion by major number and also have assembled a high percentage of the variants which are many. Portugal and it's colonies has become one of my top 10 favorite areas and I highly recommend collecting it. I have made some very nice progress with The Azores recently adding most of the very difficult and pricey 1895 St Anthony issue. At top the first page, next the 1894 Prince Henry the Navigator isuue and last the St Anthony set.

Can the stamps of Azerbaijan be found postally used? I think all the ones I have (not many) are all unused as well. Spain I don't know if the first stamp in this image is of the set you refer to but this seems to be postally used. These are actually Antoniursa's stamps but I forgot to mail them along with the rest! lol They'll be on the way to you as they are going out in today's mail. -Me.

Today a couple pages from BarbadosAs with many of my British colonies I still have much work to do. I plan to start concentrating on them in a couple years. Top page is my first page and the second a typical QEII set.

For today BavariaShown are the first and second pages and another I'm fond of. For some reason I have never come across a common set which represents most of the missing stamps I don't have for Bavaria. If anyone has an extra mint set of No's 156-175 I would be interested in buying it or at least the ones I'm missing.

Well I was working on stamps all day yesterday when 1 a.m. rolled around I realized I'd space out the "page of the day" So today a special one and a favorite of any WW collector Belgian CongoWithout doubt some of the worlds most beautiful bi color engraved stamps with exotic subjects. I'm very pleased with this collecttion as I am one stamp (1891 10fr) from completion of the country by major number except the PP. Below are the first 3 pages of regular issues, first of semi postals (which I've just completed) and another for good measure.

The Belgian Congo is Exhibit A of why I can't help but be a WW collector- too many nice stamps and countries- why need I choose? Thanks Mitchell for the GREAT pages of exotic bi-colors.

The one thing that bothers me, especially the first page, is the combining of idyllic landscapes and the evil tyrant Leopold II. I will be breaking those pages up to make them less crowded and he will get his very own page.

Thanks for showing Congo. I lack four Leopold II portraits for a complete set to 1940, but am in no hurry to get them. Clearly Leopold was a tyrant who exploited the Congolese intolerably. However, one might be tempted to conclude, given the striking progression of stamp issues, that things greatly improved after LII was out of the picture -- first Leopold's image, then the scenic views, and then the stunning portraits of native Congolese people. But not so. Atrocities and implicit apartheid continued for decades.
For a biting and sarcastic read on Leopold II, see the pamphlet titled "King Leopold's Soliloquy" written by Mark Twain, 1905.

One cannot have a showing of Belgium without considering the Semi-Postals (charity) stamps. I think it is safe to say that Belgium has far and away the most semis of any country. One of my main dream/goals has, pretty much always, been completing them. For today the first 4 pages of Belgian Semi-Postals. More than 80 pages are shown on the SITE

Today I'm just going to show a couple stamps I received today. They are both semi postals from the first set of Monaco. I never expected to get either of these little gems but found them rather hidden in an auction lot with a fuzzy scan. The 50c is hinged and the 1fr is NH, total Scott value of $790. There was also another dozen stamps in the lot I needed that cataloged close to $500. For a winning bid of $75 I'm happy campin.

Very Nice! - You received quite a deal. I notice that the B8 5fr + 5ft dull red, the highest value in the set, catalogues @ $1000. Waaaay to rich for me. Mitchell- please check your messages if you haven't recently- I want to make sure you received mine from yesterday.

Jim, yep I got the message, good to hear! The others should be there in a couple days. I certainly doubt I'll get that higher value Monaco but if one was to come along for 4.5% like these two then I would have to jump on it. Of course those two stamps were overlooked by the seller (or his cronies) or they would have been listed separately. Even though Scott doesn't list it, the NH are valued at twice the hinged examples. At those kind of prices maybe not waaaay to rich? I just looked at that lot again and it was $64.50 not $75 (which was my snipe), makes it even better.

Great looking stuff!
I just recently sold a cover with an almost full set of bells with the "ringer" to the left (it was the rarer of the two sets anyway?) and it wasn't a philatelic usage either. It brought a pretty penny too! I bought my $1 Columbian and still had loot to spare! I got the cover for free in a batch of album pages for covers. Probably the surprise in my stamp collecting history to date! I'll try to dig up the image.

Today I would like to share Bolivia with you. The first, second and 4th page as well as another interesting one are shown. The 1869 Black 500c is a forgery that I suspect is fairly common (I have two). It is rather crude compared to the original but I imagine it has fooled some collectors.

Is this a Spiro forgery? The "Focus on forgeries" Varro Tyler book says the Spiro forgery is lithographic, rather than engraved, and the flagpoles above the upper stars located at the 8:30 and 3:30 position (of a clock) in the central circle have barbed, pointed arrowheads. Your forgery has this characteristic. The genuine stamp, (which all of your other genuines illustrate) only have a thickened end to the flagpoles.

I don't know who contrived it. I have seen several others besides the two I have and they all looked to be by the same author. It is not engraved. It is easily decided when compared with others in the set. Since the two 500c stamps are the top keys for Bolivia it is nice to have lesser values to compare to. I often wonder if I'll ever get either.

Next up is Bosnia & Herzegovina Preceded by Turkey and superceded by Yugoslavia. After the Soviet breakup, Bosnia and Herzegovina began a new. It would be interesting to see maps comparing the new and the old. The first 4 pages are shown

Wow on the early Brazil. I've got the #1 Bull's Eye and a couple of the regular numerals, but none of the script numerals. Wonderful eye candy.

Mitchell, I see an error in your Bosnia & Herzegovina pages. You have an Austrian military stamp mixed in the group - it's tough to see because the stamp is dark grey with a black cancellation, but there is also a black "K.U.K. FELDPOST" diagonal overprint that makes this stamp Scott # M18 from Austria. On the plus side, this increases the catalogue value a bit! Ryan

Ryan, thanks much for the heads up on that one! Good thing I needed for my Austria. I'll rescan those pages tomorrow.
1840-1940, thanks for the kudos. The numerals are pretty tricky with lots of forgeries. Those top 3 of the script set are particularly hard to find and I've pretty much given up on them like I have the perforated numerals. A few years ago I saw a lot that had 20-30 each of the high value scripts. it cataloged for around $60,000 and went for only around $500, I've regretted not having the money to have bid on it.
