Today another of my favorite countries, GreeceOne of the last European countries that I have concentrated on, most all of the better stamps have been added in the last year or so. I think that overall Greece has produced some of the most beautiful stamps in the world and that is why I am going to show more pages than usual. Shown are the first page (large Hermes heads) then the first page of small Hermes heads followed by the first Olympic Games issues etc. The next post contains some of the later pages that are quite attractive.

That invert is great.Inverts are one reason I started Liberia. Was that a hard one? A invert collection would be something to pursue.

Frog, it would not be considered rare, with a cat of $30. The president pictured did not appreciate the stamp inverted and hoarded all that were left after the intial issuance of them. He took the presidency by force after the assassination of his predecessor. He was not at all popular and had many enemies, sometime after he was deposed, his personal cache of the inverts were made available. For today, the first 3 pages of Haiti mitch.seymourfamily.com/mward/collection/atlantic/haiti/haiti.html

I was admiring one of my favorite sets from Italy today and decided it would make a nice page of the day. Issued in 1932 it shows the exploits of the emerging Fascist party. My favorites are the last two, the last one appears to be Julius Ceasar but Scott simply calls it Roman Emperor. The next to last one shows Mussolini, ready for just about anything. One can have no doubt he wanted is head on the last stamp. I think the ships are pretty interesting and would make mighty fine targets. I've included the caption from the Scott catalog.

re: Italy -- I think Italy issued some beautiful, even magnificent, stamps during the period of about 1910-1950. Italian colonies, too. It's a pity that it came with the rise of Fascism and Mussolini.

Today Hatay Alexandretta was renamed Hatay in 1938 and issued it own stamps before being returned to TurkeyIf anyone is interested I just listed my duplicates for Hatay on Stamps2Go . I was surprised to see there were only two other listings before mine. Shown are the only two pages of issues.

Today my first page of Heligoland. As it goes with most collections the majority of these are probably reprints.

For today the Central American country of HondurasIt is one of the more difficult countries to get a respectable showing of, mostly due to the scarcity of the many overprinted issues in the 1920's. Shown are the first my first 3 pages.

I've decided to make a change in the way I am showing selected pages from my collection, for most countries of the world. Until now I was simply going down the A-Z index list on my site. It was utterly predictable and a somewhat boring way to choose the country of the day. There are 170 countries and stamp issuing authorities left to be shown (as of today). I've decided to randomly pick (without looking) a different remaining country each day. I also wanted to give those countries nearer the back of the alphabet a better chance to be shown. When I attempted the complete showing on the Ebay board a few years ago I did not finish the task. I would like to finish it becaue I think it would make a pretty nice and quick visual introduction to the stamps of the world. I'll be destroying the neat A-Z structure after this point but one can easily search the next country or just go to the website (duh). Well each day will be a surprise (at least to me) of what will be shown. I'm not sure how I am going to go about showing my U.S. collection. I only have maybe 40% of the collection scanned but hope to get the post depression issues (bulk of collection) scanned in the next few weeks. I also have several areas to make pages for; like Match and Medicines, telegraphs, locals and various revenues. I was thinking towards the end of the complete showing, of having a week or two just on U.S. If I can manage to make good progress in scanning I think it would work out nicely. I have not shown Guam and Hawaii for that reason, but was going to show possessions when showing the country.

A fun trivia note on your 1948 Mozambique issues - if you look at the 3.50 escudo value (waterfall), you'll notice that the "$" currency symbol has been reversed. Ryan

Ryan, Thanks for pointing that out. These mistakes often occur but they are usually corrected. They must have completed the run and decided to go with it. Today's pick is the British colony SwazilandIndependence was achieved in 1968. Shown are the first page a few others.

Mitchell Enjoy your collections- I notice this one goes up to the 1960s. Do you have a favorite stamp issuing era, or do you like them all?

Jim, Broadly speaking my favorites are pre 1940 engraved stamps, bi colors at the top of the list. I do not "like them all". For independent African nations my interest is almost non existent. It may be, if I live long enough, that I might collect them sometime down the road. If so, I would want to buy the countries mostly complete and mounted, not something I would want to piece together. Pretty much, the only reason I would have in doing so, is to present a wider showing on my website. The same goes for Eastern European and South American countries past 1960. Stamps of these areas, went pretty much downhill after this period. I do plan on extending the Baltics to collecting recent issues, as well as many of the countries that came about because of the break-up of the Soviet Union. The reason for this is because I find the stamps, for the most part, to be very attractive and of very good quality.

Today, Puerto RicoUnder Spanish domination for just over 400 years, PR was ceded to the United States of America, after Spain was defeated in the Spanish American war. An island paradise I was lucky to spend a couple weeks in, in 2001. Despite the modest size of the Island I put 1656 miles on the rental car and would recommend it to anyone for vacationing. Shown are all but the last page of Spanish stamps which are all overprinted stamps of early issues.

Regarding Mitch's showing of old Persian stamps, if any members have good tips on online sites that help to identify old Persian forgeries, I'd sure like to hear about it - I have a Farahbakhsh catalogue but it doesn't offer too much help on identifying forgeries.

Today a pretty weak showing of PalestineI'm just waiting for an auction lot that has most all of the overprinted stamps. Like the first overprinted atamps of Ireland they are not stamps I would want to get one at a time. Shown are the first and last pages.
