Obviously scratched onto the plate but for what reason, who knows! I will try and look into that 'The Kiwi' article to see what they have to say. Dave

I thought I would show some 1930's flight covers here as they often contain stamps from the 1935 Pictorial series on them! These ones from the ' American Clipper' flight of early Jan 1938 (was scheduled for late December '37) Dave

I just received in another wee lot of airmail covers. This one below is another example of a 1935 Pictorial being used on it - in this case the 3/-. It is the grubbiest cover of the 3 received but it does have an interesting cachet & addressee Dave

This was in a small collection of random covers that sold on eBay for $1. Nothing particularly unusual for one of these military covers, but a nice pair of the second pictorial 3ds, along with some interesting censor marks (one apparently Egyptian), and a NZ Army Egypt postmark.

Yes, that seems about right, Dave. These covers survived in fairly high numbers because they were treasured items. There are many more different military postmarks than I had appreciated, which seems to be a potentially interesting collecting area. Very happy with this cover (and the four others) for $1.

Glad to see this issue in a thread of its own. This was one of the very first areas I began to specialise in and probably what drew me more in to stamp collecting beyond a mere hobby. I must have started going in to detail with this issue when I was a school boy, have not done much active collecting of these pictorials for many years now, will have to revisit some material to see what I can share. One I do have at hand, though not all that impressive to look at is a 2s Captain Cook 1939 Change of Perforation CP L13d Lovely Mint example, centred a little to the right. This issue is much scarcer Mint than Used as it apparently had little publicity at the time so few collectors procured examples. What got this one was perhaps more the well known "Q" flaw, which adds a little to its interest. Never been a fan of collecting Mint but these stamps certainly look good as representations of the engraver's art and of NZ iconography. Beautiful Set.

Agree, Clayton. There's a lot to appreciate in this set, and many subtle elements to collecting it.
Look forward to seeing what else you have.

Speaking of the 2/- Cook I won a good lot of 2/- last nite actually. Most are used, and I await their arrival still. But here is an image of a block of 12 of the multi NZ & Star wmk. I am unsure of the perfs at this stage but will update when it arrives. I hope to find a COQK flaw in the used lot too. I am forever hopeful lol Dave

This is an eBay purchase from a couple of years ago. It's CP - LO12a (x), a 1/- Official with single watermark, inverted. These are seemingly quite rare. CP doesn't list prices for mint examples and the CV for used examples is $2000 NZD. I guess this is another one that collectors didn't notice at the time and only cropped up after they'd been circulated.

You've got me checking thru' all of my 1/- '35 Pictorial stamps now! Inverted wmk's are hard to find tho'. I have had 10,000's of Universals thru my hands over the years and only found 1 !
Still, that won't stop me lol

I've been slowly assembling a basic collection of the second pictorials in plate blocks, but. until today, the 5d had eluded me. This is L8c the perf 13 - 14 x 13½ with multiple watermark (inverted). This variation was printed in July 1937. CP lists MNH singles for $130, but doesn't price the plate block with inverted WM.

I just came across a reference in PSoNZ vol.II to the above 5d block with inverted WM - "In August, 1936, printings were placed on sale on the paper with multiple watermark and in July, 1937, 85 sheets were issued with the watermark inverted. These had been printed from a plate numbered 1 and the sheets comprised 120 stamps in 10 rows of 12"
I'm pretty sure the plate number only appeared once per sheet on these, so there were only 85 plate blocks #1 with inverted WM produced.

And here it is. SG584 / CP L8fPlate 2CP has a note for this one too :At some stage, after considerable use Plate 2 developed a progressive type of deterioration, spots of color appeared in profusion; as time went on the defects became more and more unsightly. Eventually the plate was reconditioned, presumably by de-surfacing and numerous impressions were re-entered. I wonder if these are the early signs of that : Dave

A great thread! I really like this set of stamps, in part because of their designs, the engraving, and the varied subject matter, and in part because of the experience I had bicycling for a month through the South Island some years ago. Two highlights: I watched a kiwi for 10 minutes while it foraged on the forest floor on a small (predator-free) island, and I saw a live tuatara in a cage!! One of my dad's stock books has a number of pages of New Zealand stamps and I just found this used set in a glassine envelope tucked in among the stamps. His mid-1950s price for the used set: US$1.45. The stock book contains multiples of the smaller denominations, all used. Unfortunately, most of the images in this thread show up on my computer screen as blue squares containing the text "imgbb.com/service unavailable." I've tried to determine if there are different watermarks among the stamps in the stock book, but the pictures in the Scott online catalogue appear similar and there is no scale. Do the watermarks differ in size? Are they easily distinguished?

Hi Doug The 1935 Pictorials are an interesting set to collect. In my world I consider them 'modern' and therefore haven't looked too much into them until more recently. The watermarks used on them are 'fairly' similar in the size of the NZ & Star used, although they do differ slightly! the main difference is that one is a single NZ & Star, and the other a multiple NZ & Star. SG refers to them as wmk.43 for the single NZ & Star and wmk.98 for the multiple NZ & Star. CP refers to them as W.7 for the single and W.8 for the multiple. Here they are from the respective catalogs : SGCPI hope this helps you Dave

This 2½d has a pretty impressive colour shift. The centring on these is often a bit off, but I've not seen one like this before (with a regularly centred example on the right for comparison).

WOW, that is quite a shift upwards of the brown Klem.
It looks like the white area is 'snow'. Perhaps a 'Glacier' even! lol
