I have a binder full of cheques with stamps, but this is the oldest and the first I've gotten with an 1868 Bill Stamp. Actually a promissory note for $30 filled out on July 1st (Canada Day, or Dominion Day as it was called back then), 1878, with the promise to pay it back by the first of October 1879. Interestingly, for me anyway, while I got this down in Toronto yesterday, the note was actually taken out in a little community called Georgina, which is just a few kilometers north of where I live. With interest at 7%. Ouch!

What I collect: My main collecting area is focused on Canadian stamps printed from steel engraved plates. Specifically re-entries and constant plate varieties.

as mentioned my focus of late is making my revenues more complete.I discovered on examination I was missing only the 20 and 30 cent(FB11&12) from the first issue of federal bill stamps.I found this lot and was the cheaper approach to obtain both so I jumped on it. free images uploadImagine my surprise on examining theFB9 to discover the "B" for "E" error. What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Today's mail included this group of various values of the first and second bill stamp issues from 1864 and 1865. As my main Canadian collection does not need many adds a venture into revenue stamps seemed like an interesting and logical direction to head.

The last of the recent Canada arrivals were these 3 higher values of the 1864 First Bill Issue. The Van Dam numbers are FB12, 16 and 17. I like the October 12, 1865 or 66 SON cancel on the 30 cents stamp. I have not spent much time yet looking for the history of the Commercial Bank of Canada. An initial Google search has not come up with a history of a bank with that name in 1866. Edit: From an online document 'The history of banking in Canada' the mystery was solved "One other of the Upper Canada banks, the Commercial Bank of Canada, first known as the Commercial Bank of the Midland District, failed in 1867."

Thanks rednaxela. I had found mention of the Commercial Bank of Midland District in my own search but no mention of the name change. The document link you provided confirmed the name change: "One other of the Upper Canada banks, the Commercial Bank of Canada, first known as the Commercial Bank of the Midland District, failed in 1867."

These 2 Second Bill issues arrived this week. The 8 cents (FB25) has a nice 1865 SON cancel from what I think is the Bank of British North America that began with a royal charter in London, England in 1836. The second stamp is a one dollar with a great two colour combination. (FB34).

Another arrival today was this lot of 13 Nova Scotia Bill Stamps. They are an overprint of the Federal issue of 1868. These were in use from 1868 to 1871. I only had 3 until these arrived so it takes me a long way down the road to having a decent collection of them.

hdm1950 A very nice set, Hugh! The pattern for the lower values is interesting … brown - red - green - brown - red - green - brown - brown - green. Is there a story to that missing red? (Smile)

(Smile) Not that I am aware of Hugh. The red is actually called orange. The 1 cent came in both a brown and orange. Sadly I am missing the orange which catalogues at 1500.00 mint and 1100.00 used. I am missing the higher values so the search is still on for the .50. $1, 2 and 3. Our work is never done.
