Alanl, Very nice Canada sheetlets. They do go for nice designs. Here are a few more and I'll see if I have any others over the coming days. The first one up is my favourite.

Alanl has shown some 1997 Canada Lung Assc, but whats this? It has English/French......so is it another Canadian seal from 1997. (Note - Its been cancelled which is unusual) I'm not that good on bird species but it might be a Magnolia Warbler

The label was probably adhered adjacent to the Postage stamp, and so received a partial cancellation strike, this is reasonably common. Cheers

The Lung Association, in addition to issuing its Christmas seals annually, also issued some Nature seals, similar to what had been done by the Canadian Wildlife Federation. As far as I can tell, these were issued annually from 1992 to 2005 (maybe even before or after those years also, but those are the ones I've seen). Here's the sheet from 1997 (I hesitate to put it here though, as these should probably be in a different thread). In 1992 and 1993, provincial flowers were featured, in 1994 and 1995, other flowers were featured. In 1996 and 1997, the sheets featured different birds. Haven't seen the sheet from 1998. In 1999 the flower designs from 1994 were re-issued. In 2000 and 2001 the sheets featured butterflies. In 2002 the sheets featured adult and baby ducks. Haven't seen the sheet from 2003. In 2004 it was birds, and in 2005 it was butterflies & flowers. These are much less common than the Christmas seals.

Ron. Thanks for the information and scanning the full sheet Only 3 different bird types, but interesting use of spacing seems to give the effect of a bigger selection of birds.

I find this very confusing, we have the christmas seals, generally without the textual inscription, ergo easy to identify Then we have the "The Lung Association", however they seem to issue christmas seals as well as the nature series. I wonder if this was just a further revenue raising idea, to extend the range. The year 2000 "The Lung Association" has the vignette of the 1953 Christmas seal, with the text 1900-2000

It does seem confusing, but it's how the Christmas seals campaigns evolved over the years in Canada. It started in 1908 with the National Red Cross and a handful of tuberculosis hospitals issuing Christmas seals to help raise funds to build more hospitals, hire nurses, and improve medical care. Soon many hospitals were being funded through local Chrisitmas seals campaigns (eg. Muskoka Free Hospital, Toronto Free Hospital, Essex County Sanatoriaum, Royal Edward Institute, etc.) In 1927, a national Christmas seal campaign was established by the Canadian Tuberculosis Association. From 1927-1950 it issued dated seals, in both English and French versions. From 1951 to the present, the seals are dated with the word "CANADA". In 1977 the Canadian Tuberculosis Association was renamed the Canadian Lung Association, to reflect a shift in the treatment from tuberculosis to lung diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and smoking-induced illnesses. Starting in 1990, the seals actually mentioned "The Lung Association" on the seal. Each of these seals has a Christmas or winter theme integrated into the design.
It must be remembered that in parallel, the Canadian Wildlife Federation also issued annual Christmas seals to raise funds. And as a means of doubling its fundraising activities, it also issued annual "Spring" stamps. The CWF issued Christmas and Spring stamps from about 1973 to 1993.
About the time the CWF stopped issuing its stamps, the Lung Association started issuing its Nature seals, and continued to do so until at least 2005. These have flowers, birds, or butterflies designs.
Hope that helps shed some light on the subject...

Here's a Christmas Seal booklet from 1938. It may be a part booklet because the cover inscription reads 100 seals $1 but inside there is only a pane of 20. It looks lovely and came to me courtesy of ' firstfrog'. The cover and a close-up of the reproduction on the cover are shown. Londonbus1
