Castle of "La Suda", Tortosa, Catalonia (180 SW of Barcelona) by the river Ebre. Built in the X century by the moors on a previous Ibero-Roman castrum, it was rebuilt in 1148 after being conquered by Ramon Berenguer IV, independent count of Barcelona.

Castle of Sant Ferran, Figueres, Catalonia (150 km North of Barcelona)- Built by the Spanish, by the mid of the XVIII century, it was one of the bigests fortresses of Europe. But, it was absolutely useless...

Frontier Forts of Ciskei ... Ciskei, the land on the near side of the River Kei, has a troubled past. Under apartheid it was a self-governing territory that, in December 1981, was declared independent by the South African Government. As a consequence, its residents lost their SA citizenship. After just over twelve years of nominal independence, it was reintegrated into South Africa on April 24, 1994. During that period, they issued some 228 postage stamps. This 1991 series focused on Frontier Forts: Stamps:Ciskei: Frontier Forts Series Issued on November 7, 1991 Fort Armstrong 27c Sc. 183 Keiskamma Hoek Post 45c Sc. 184 Fort Hare Sc. 185 Cavalry Barracks, Peddie Sc. 186 The cachet on this FDC is a map of many other forts in 19th century Ciskei. I'm not familiar with the cachet maker (CPT?) ... I'd welcome any information, suggestions or comments.

Not all Forts and Fortifications were built for the ages ... here are two more humble structures. The first is an old wooden blockhouse near Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Mailed with a 1c King Edward VII definitive, issued on July 1, 1903. The postcard has a duplex cancel from Kingston on August 2, 1909. The second is a more 'modern' blockhouse built to protect a lock on the Rideau Canal, near Kingston. It has a stone base with a wooden structure on top. The postcard has a 2c George V definitive with duplex cancel from Kingston on July 14, 1915. Postal rates had gone up earlier that year. As evidenced by the millions of cards from the 'Golden Age' of postcards. 'Fort and Fortification tourism' brought people all over the world to look at ruins, castles and other military structures. Or, just have a picnic nearby. And, if you couldn't travel, there was always a postcard. (smile)

Colonial Forts in Brazil ... some of the oldest European fortifications in the Americas are in Brazil. These four stamps were issued on March 14, 1975. Fort Orange was built in 1631 by the Dutch. After their capitulation in in 1654 it was renamed Fort of the Holy Cross (Sc. 1379). Construction of The Fort of the Three Kings started on January 6th, 1599 - the Feast of the Epiphany, the Three Wise Men. It was built as part of a campaign to end piracy in the north of Brazil (Sc. 1389) The Fort of Montserat commanded a strategic point overlooking the east coast of Brazil. It was built between 1583 and 1587 (Sc. 1381). Fort Our Lady of Remedies was also built in 1654 after the Dutch capitulation ... again, on the ruins of earlier fortifications built during the Second Dutch Invasion of Brazil (Sc. 1382).

Thanks for those Hugh, missing from my collection. I had no idea about that part of South American history I have read colonisation and trade in the 17th century, I don't recall any mention of Brazil. Time to get that book out again. Ah! found it Parry Trade and dominion Page 42 (There are other references to Brazil also, which I'll work through)

I had no idea about that part of South American history I have read colonisation and trade in the 17th century, I don't recall any mention of Brazil. I know how you feel. I have a graduate degree in military history and I can't remember a single lecture or reading ever covering the colonial 'wars' in the South Atlantic. Thanks to stamps and postal history, however, this gap in my education is being closed little by little (simile).
