I collect Ethiopia, mostly for sentimental reasons. One of the few issues I have as complete sheets is from this Country: the 1930 Coronation of the Emperor Haile Selassie. These were engraved and printed in France, here is a sample (notice the beautiful selvedge):

I was born in Eritrea and at the time it was part of Ethiopia. I was there for the first 12 years, in 1958 we emigrated to Sydney, Australia.
I also collect Eritrea but they are not cheap and I have only very few.

Alex, Your post prompted me to pull the Ethiopia section of my Dad's Scott Internationals. While Eritrea pages started with its 1892 issue, the Ethiopa pages began with some 1950 issuances (and both sections were completely void of stamps). A look in a Scott's catalog prompted me to pull the Abyssinia section (so much to learn, so little time) and to my surprise, the only stamps that he had mounted were this particular set. I've uploaded 2 100kb images of the 5t stamp to help emphasize your point about the engraving quality. With regard to that amazing selvedge, it wouldn't surprise me if some day a piece of it appears in the Cinderella section under the title "Can someone help identify this?" Thanks for your post!

I'd be happy to host any image that you think might be too large or take up too much bandwidth for the site. As far as I know, my hosting plan has unlimited bandwidth, and I am a long, long way from using up my disc capacity, so hopefully I can extend that offer for a long time to come.
Just let me know. I believe my email address shows up in my profile.

Here is a sweet registered cover from Addis Abeba, Ethiopia to Akron, Ohio. Stamps are Scott 293 and 294. It was mailed in Addis on the 22nd of April, 1948 and made it to New York only six days later on the 28th of April. Impressively, it got to Akron the same day, though there is also an Akron backstamp for the 29th. Seven days from Addis Abeba to Akron - not too shabby!

Hope I'm putting these in the correct country. Remarkably for me, this is the entire set - issued in 1945 - and another of my boot sale album finds. It helps that they're accompanied by the small data label you see - what does it mean 'THEY WILL NEVER BE CATALOGUED'? The set also appears to be available overstamped with V - presumably for victory at the end of WW II.

The set does not look to me like an italian occupation issue. It was printed in Switzerland.
Anyway it was never issued,so "it will never be catalogued" in a regular way.
However the with an large "V" (Victory) overprinted version was issued on May 8th,1945 (German capitulation) and is listed in cats.

The Yvert & Tellier Africa catalog numbers the original issue, to the benefit of the Red Cross, and with a large red V overprint, as #240-244. And states that the stamps also exist, but unissued, without the overprint.

thanks very much to both - really appreciate the information. I can imagine that the more memorable of the two issues - with and without the V - would be the latter. As the first set - without the V - wasn't issued officially as a revenue stamp, might this make the first set a cinderella perhaps?:-)

The first Ethiopian stamps were really private locals that took mail as far as Djibouti, where a Somali Coast stamp was added for the journey to UPU member states. The stamps were printed in Europe, and most were sold to collectors at a discount. Unfortunately, someone brought a trunk of them to Ethiopia, allowing for cheating the nascent postal service. So, the postmaster overprinted them, changing the overprint every year. After their period of validity, the postmaster effectively forged the overprints, but used different color inks, and corrected some of the Amharic punctuation. On this cover, the overprint is in violet, and the punctuation is correctly incorrect. The addressee is Madame Ilg, the wife of the Swiss entrepreneur hired by Emperor Menelik (pictured on the stamp) to equip Ethiopia as a modern state, including a postal service. On the back, you can see the Somali Coast stamp that carried the cover to Switzerland via paquebot.

Of all the African countries' stamps, I have always found stamps from Ethiopia to be unique for their designs and topics, from emperor Haili Selassie to animals and exotic overprints on some of the oldies. The stamps are unique... a lot different from most of the other African countries. Lots of fun and good to look at! Not so easy to get some of the oldies. southafrica1
