With the exception of catalogs and digital files, I only have two books in my philatelic library. The Schmid book is a must read for U.S. collectors, providing a wealth of information on its subject. The Linn book is geared for a specialty that I have yet to undertake -- perhaps once I finish cataloging the worldwide collection...

What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many catalogues ....

I'm a big fan of specialized country catalogues, especially for those countries that I have in enough quantity that's it's possible I might find something listed only in the specialized book. I recently found these two, specialized catalogues for older stamps from France (in French) and Romania (in German). I hadn't heard of either of them before, so I just took a shot in the dark. Hopefully they'll prove to be useful for me. Ryan

I have a bit of a love affair going on with reference books. If I come across an old or outdated reference on a dealers table, whether I can use it or not at that time, I usually end up taking it home. I've made a point of trying to buy at least one new reference book each year. Sometimes that's just a case of updating something I already have with a newer edition but for the most part I try and make it something I don't already have. When it comes to buying stamps I'm a sucker for items that are oddball and not easily identified, whether that be the country that issued them or more often what their purpose was. I prefer to buy auction lots, collections and estates rather than a single or set of stamps and lots of times I find items within that fall into the hard to identify category as well. If I end up with enough similar items that I haven't been able to learn enough about online or through asking others then that usually helps to point me in the direction of my next purchase. Sometimes if I'm lucky enough, one of those oddball items that I've purchased even though it doesn't fit into my collections, will have enough value to cover my purchase cost and/or help to offset or pay for whatever reference book I bought. Even if it doesn't I get almost as much enjoyment out of books as the stamps.
I do have a decent amount of catalogs and reference books here, albeit an extremely mixed bag of countries/topics, that hopefully I'll be able to help with some identification/value questions down the road.

Nice try Zuzu, we, here in Australia, are yet to experience the reformation, We still burn witches here, and Google books are not available to us. PS anyone wanting the link to work, just ditch the capital W from Www and replace with lower case : www Example: text string was "old stamp books"

Nice try Zuzu, we, here in Australia, are yet to experience the reformation, We still burn witches here, and Google books are not available to us. Well, poo. I freely admit that I don't quite understand how all the various Google Books stuff works. I just know that often when I'm Googling a name to find out about an addressee, some of the results are on Google Books. When I click on the link, I'm able to view the book, and there's usually a download button or something that lets me choose whether I want it on my Android or as PDF. I think. I'll have to pay better attention next time.

Lucky you, (and I share your lack of expertise around Google Books) However, I have a another route to pursue, Our esteemed TSF member, Ryan, offered this for consideration some time ago, I have ordered it, and will do a road test when it arrives here, in the middle Kingdom.

Rod: Do let us know what you think once you've gotten it. I've seen that listing before, along with some others (are is that another seller? -- too lazy to go look right now), and I've wondered both about the quality of the scans as well as the feasibility of looking at this kind of material on screen.

Again, NO Australia we can read the FREE content, via a clunky "scanned image" format, usefullness 0/10 Philately involves "referencing" when you want information on a particular discrete topic, going down that route appears time wasting. What is an .ACSM file? As you may have noticed, many downloadable books on Google Play have an ".ACSM" extension. This is an Adobe file format used for Digital Rights Management (DRM) of your ebooks. Ebooks with DRM are protected under copyright law, and our publisher and author partners require us to guard their titles against unauthorized copying and abuse.

A "stamp album pages" from NZ was a clanger. My best two CD's ? Scott 2009 catalogue, and Bill Steiner's Album Page CD. Cinderellas on CD and Cricket stamps on CD are good, but used sparingly as a reference, same goes for the Forbin revenues CD PDF's are the best for reference material, and have had some great gifts of old books as PDF's from stamp Forum members.

As promised, the CD "Early Postage Stamps" Roadtest. brought to my attention by Ryan. Value GBP 7 Lots of ancient texts from here and there, some large books, that hang when I try to load, due to size my video card /memory cannot handle it. The ones I opened, had searchable text. Under the Folder "Food and Cookery" It must be stressed, the books, articles are all old, most I have browsed are pre 1940. Contents :

I think you'll find most are pre-WW1! Lots of ancient stuff there, but that's a given considering modern copyright law - in much of the world, copyright extends 70 years past the death of the author. And by 2036, 70 years after the death of Walt Disney, copyright term will undoubtedly have been extended again. Everytime anything to do with Mickey Mouse has come up for the potential of falling into the public domain, copyright law changes! ha ha Everything on the disc has reverted to the public domain, so it's all old stuff. Still, for ~$10 it's worth it to have these old stamp books just as curiosities, considering the sheer quantity of material. And how did you like the Alphonse Mucha disc? Ryan

Bought the said CD myself, As Ryan pointed out for what the price is I don't think you can go wrong and a wealth of information to be had at your finger tips even if its old material.

Been picking up a lot of books lately, expanding my resources. Just got 'Canada Domestic and International Postal Rates and Fees 1870-1999' by Dr Robert C. Smith and Anthony S. Wawrukiewicz. Not a real page turner, but will be useful for those times, which seem to be frequent, when I find myself wondering, 'I wonder how much it cost in 1888...'

As a cinderella dealer I am always on the lookout for new literature on revenues, poster stamps, charity seals, etc. I have found a few great sources for many titles, both current and out of print. John Barefoot, of the UK, has been involved with worldwide revenues for many years and has written/edited many catalogues. The one illustrated here, British Commonwealth Revenues, is now in its 9th edition, and has grown to over 400 pages. John's website is at: www.jbarefoot.co.uk/index.htm
