I ordered this back in January (from Spain), but it finally arrived! I have been acquiring earlier editions of cFrance atalogues before tey all started combining to try and find out when the various color and die varieties/types were added- While I stilll don't know when exactly, it does appear that it is/was Dallay (which a local France collector told me he thought Dallay was the one who started listing these variants). This catalogue not only lists the numerous color, but provides color images of some of the shades-which I do understand that color reproduction may not be 100% accuarte, but it is at least something more to "see". It does not include every nuance/sgade, and the details regarding the varous "Types" appears to be the same images that are currently in use...and just as small! But for the France specialist, if you do not have a copy of Dallay (without the others) it looks like it will be helpful worth the wait!!!

Wow, I ordered this yesterday!
That's great service from Canada Post, and postage free for a 6 lb book!
Does anyone want a hefty 2020 catalogue? Recycle bin next week!

If YOU pay the postage, YOU can have it! It'll be a few bucks crossing the border!
Note: the souvenir sheets are not included, sorry!

Yesterday, a friend gave me this catalog. I don't collect Portugal area; but, as I can read Portuguese, it will be interesting to learn a little on their philatey.

Although I have not purchased any texts of late, I discovered a cornucopia of the monthly Delcampe magazines that can be found here.
More than enough summer-time reading...
Have fun and happy collecting!

biglavalamp If you have Adobe Acrobat Pro or Libre you can download as PDF and then "lift text in paragraphs and drop into Google translate, then copy the translation and paste over the original text. It's a bit cumbersome but it is the only way I know if the weblink isn't set up to translate (more and more are)

Two member's of my local club (Bergens Filatelist klubb) has released this brick of a book. Here is a google translate from the authors. Finally, the book on foreign postage rates and fees is ready. The book was 633 pages, and weighs 1.85 kg. It contains all tariffs and fees in the period 1875 to 2000, with the exception of airmail tariffs and parcel postage tariffs.

Then I had to purchase the The Skilling Oscar stamps book. I have been inspirited by the tread thegubman posted his wonderful Oscar stamps. But also by a lecture in my local club. I have decided to concentrate my Norwegian collecting to the Skilling Oscar Stamps 1856-60.

I realize this essential French Colonies auction from 2011 is online, at least that's how I first bumped into it, but nice to have the hardbound all the same:

Received today, 2-volume Mellone FDC catalog for the 1940s. My thumbing through my 1948 Frances Scott Key brought to mind that I had no idea of some of the cachets. I was astounded to find 96 cachet designs listed. Far too many for me to attempt "completion." This is the Second edition published in 1984, quite fresh and crisp. While out of date for pricing one can easily see if a certain cachet is $pecial.

The Minkus-Krause was last issued in a 3 ring binder. I had one a while back but it got thrown away during a big cleamip. Krause-Minkus separated commemoratives and definitives so separate numbering. I was not a fan of that.
If I were going to issue a collector friendly catalog. I would also put it in a maintainable version like the 3/4 ring with values separately so one could maintain the catalog section separately from the values. The other idea is to separate the listings and images so images were all on one part and listing on opposite similar to how the USPS did their book.

Hey all, so I'm reading through the various postings on this topic with interest, and have a question for the group since I see some of you doing something I've never thought to do. I've noticed many of you have acquired, say, a stamp catalogue of some kind from 1875, for example. My question is, what would be the benefit for me as a stamp collector in doing that? For example, I do have an older Scott catalogue that I got just so I could have a vague idea of more current values, but I'm curious about the value of acquiring older catalogues and adding them to my library. Aaaaand GO! Thanks!

The old catalogs as well as being fascinating contain, as I was able to experience, information and also explanations that the new editions for some reason do not have. Personally, I buy new catalogs every ten years or more to get slightly more contemporary quotations, but I never throw away the old catalogs, I put them in the top right corner of my library, precisely the corner of the old catalogs, and often for some checks I still reuse them.
Furthermore, any philatelic text, from the catalog to the manual or specific text by variety or subject, are limited editions in quantity.

being a boot sale (estate sale) freak, I get to see a few old SG catalogues. This past week I picked up their 1961 offering of 'Part II - EUROPE and COLONIES' - It may not get a tremendous outing but the French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian Colonies, Russia etc. is well worth the £0.50p. I paid - and it has the original d/j. For those of us who collect pre-decimal (U.K.), this sort of thing provides a good resource for earlier material. Aside from the values aspect, the main drawback is probably the less than perfect illustrations.

I have likely purchased my last "newest" catalogue for awhile, unless someone says that there is some significantly 'new" information on the earlier stamps, the newer catalogues don't offer all that much when one only collects up to the 1960's (or some 70's). In some cases the newest catalogues delete some of the earlier information.
The catalogue values are to be taken with a grain of salt regardless the source- just look on e-Bay, DelCamp, Hipstamp etc.,l and you can get an idea rather quickly as to current market value
