How do you pronounce the catalogue publisher Michel? I've always pronounced it "Mishell" but last week during our British Empire Study Group meeting we heard Steve Zirinsky pronounce it "Mickle". Out of curiosity, does anyone know the correct pronunciation?
Here's the first video posted by Michel on their YouTube page - it's in English but presented by a German so you hear the correct pronunciation here. Ryan

I'm happy I have been saying it like a German, and not "mickle", which just doesn't sound right to me!

I saw the exhibition the book is based on a few years ago. The Classics Comics version is that instead of having a single place of first-day issue, the stamp was made available at many post offices throughout the state. I took a picture at the show; I know I'm a lousy photographer, but this shot will give you an idea of some of the hijinx that were going on: Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield line up (north to south) along the west bank of the Connecticut River, and they are still vying amongst themselves to be recognized as the first place in the Connecticut Colony to be settled by Europeans. So it was doable to drive between the three places and get someone to postmark covers like these. People took stamp collecting seriously back then! It was actually one of the most memorable stamp exhibits I've ever seen, so I'm looking forward to revisiting it. BTW, the Charter Oak is an interesting part of our history. In 1687, a governor-general was sent over from London to keep an eye on the colony and got irritated because he thought everybody jere was insubordinate and had funny ideas. He was going to abscond with the charter that Charles II had proclaimed in 1662 for Connecticut and have it nullified, but the legend is that when the governor-general demanded it, it mysteriously disappeared and was kept in a crevice in this large and already old tree until the commotion had died down. The tree was knocked over in a thunderstorm in the mid-19th century (it was maybe 500 years old), but it lives on as a symbol. I went to a bourse today and one of the co-authors was sitting around with a couple of copies, so I bought one on the spot.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

This little specialty book arrived today. I had found a copy at the Toronto Resource Library several years ago when I was creating a list of the post offices of Queens County, Nova Scotia. I was able to reserve it and view it at the library. I created my list and thought at the time it would be a good book to own and now I do. It appears the previous owner had created a substantial collection of stamps and covers of Nova Scotia based on the pencil notes throughout the book.

hdm1950 I knew Lloyd Macpherson during my Canadian days. He was the ultimate gentleman and such an enthusiastic collector. We once completed a trade. Me a lot of 3c SQ covers with NS cancels which he went ga-ga over and traded to me a registered Canada post card franked with a 5c registered letter stamp.

The four Michel catalogues that arrived safely out of the six I ordered - something happened to the parcel between the USPS center in Cincinnati and the center in Columbus, and these came in a "body bag" from USPS. 2021 Germany Spezial vols 1 and 2, 2021 Austria Spezial, and the newest edition of the USA Spezial Michel produces. The Michel USA Spezial is quite nice - and gives some different insights on USA stamps in terms of recognition of shades and variants compared to Scott. Here are a couple pages from the start the 1870-1882 Series (Michel Combines the three printers together within one grouping)
I've reordered the two lost catalogues - Soviet Union Specialized and Great Britain Specialized - now following their tracking (about to leave Germany according to USPS). Hopefully no delivery issues this time!

Books in philately are important. Well done . In the psate several yeras I think I may well have spent as much on "philatelic" catalogues and references as I have on actual stamps! I was very resistant early on, thinking the money was better spent on stamps. However i soon realized if you didn't know what you had (and there was a limit to how often you could ask for 'help" ) having multiple printed/digital resources i9s now a necessity!

The International Society of Guatemala Collectors has made available for free download the new 2022 edition of The Stamps and Postal Stationery of Guatemala which, at over 1000 pages(!) is an absolute gold mine for anyone interested in the stamps of Guatemala from 1871 to 2021 and in particular the many varieties that exist on classical era stamps. Available from the website at www.guatemalastamps.com/

And for my library I was finally able to get myself a copy of Nicolas Follansbee's A Catalog of the Stamps Of Mexico 1856-1910 2015 edition, which I have been trying to get for a couple of years. It's the BIBLE of classical Mexican philately and definitely worth hunting down if you have any interest in that period of Mexican philately.

Finally received the two missing Michel catalogues that the USPS lost in my previous shipment from Michel - Soviet Union Specialized 2017 and Great Britain Specialized 2022/2023 For those who are into Machins, Michel's listings fall somewhere between Gibbons Concise and Deegam in terms of depth of coverage from my quick look so far. Sample page of a Machin listing below. And of course deep coverage of classic era stamps - here are listings for the 1934 George V definitives, with lots of shades and difference in image sizes all laid out
Gibbons of course is the catalogue of record for GB stamps, but it's always interesting to see how other catalogue publishers approach the topic, especially when they attempt an in-depth specialized listing.

This is a picture book, Stamping our History, printed on thick glossy images with images that fill entire page and stories. Images are mostly of engraved issues. The book was larger than the scanner platen co cut off at bottom. The image does not do the book justice. The text on the cover has the look of silver foil. I purchased it since it was just so great looking.

@ angore said: "I purchased it since it was just so great looking." I have certainly done that, purchased a book not only for function, but for form. In fact I still have some of my French Literature books from my high school years in Europe because they were beautifully designed and made to appeal to the teenage eye! (This post written by the woman who still has her beautiful Encyclopaedia Britannica and Great Books of the Western World in her library, though, so your mileage may vary! )

Well I'd love to say I've just added two "Desert Magic II Drying Books" to my stuff... but Amos has mailed me two copies of the Scott Identification Guide to U.S. Stamps (Micarelli) by mistake, sigh... I'll be calling them today to fix that... First time I've received a wrong order from anyone, as far as I can remember...

I've really been enjoying David Cobb Craig's new book First Class: America's Marvelous Midcentury Stamps. It's a beautifully printed art book full of full-color, high-res, close-up photos of U.S. stamps from the 1950s-1970s, with informative write-ups focusing on their designs. Pure eye candy, and interesting, too. I highly recommend it to anyone else who is fond of this era of U.S. issues!

seegod1 I had shared these books back in 2021. Holmes's Specialized were the go to book before Unitrade. To be honest I rarely go to it but if you came across an early copy of it you would find it useful.
