Arrived Friday. $8 + shipping Print run : 300 The Postal History of The Spanish Civil War 1936-1939 Shelley Great yarn, lots of juicy info, however if you are searching for an index on the vast array of Civil War charities and cinderellas, this is of no assistance other than the towns that issued.

Took delivery on this baby today. Been looking for one ever since I found it at the Toronto Reference Library (where you can look, but not take home). Wasn't able to find one at used book stores so turned to ebay and got this copy for a good price. Cover's a little damaged, but nothing I can't live with. The story of Her Majesty's collection, which started with Queen Victoria's son Prince Alfred, carried on through George V and on down to Liz. I think will make for some interesting reading.

You know, the missus is forever rolling her eyes at my obsession. But then she turns around an does something nice (really she's one of my biggest enablers!) Opened this book up this Christmas morning. A recently published volume about the Smithsonian Collection (apparently not available in bookstores yet, she had to order online). I think it will be a nice follow up to the book posted just above.

Just a quick peek, Jeff. I don't get a finders fee from the Smithsonian, or own stock (if you could). Here are a couple of spreads. Confiscated Confederate plates (we've discussed these before) Persian rug revenues Letter posted from the Titanic (also has the Hindenburg, Chicago fire and World Trade centre artifacts) Far more pictures and less text than the Queen's stamps book, but a feast for the eyes, to be sure You can see more here on the Amazon site (again, I get no percentage, but mention my name...couldn't hurt!) www.amazon.com/Every-Stamp-Tells-Story-Contribution/dp/1935623427...and click on the Look Inside link.

I have a bit of a love affair going on with reference books. If I come across an old or outdated reference on a dealers table, whether I can use it or not at that time, I usually end up taking it home. I've made a point of trying to buy at least one new reference book each year. Sometimes that's just a case of updating something I already have with a newer edition but for the most part I try and make it something I don't already have. When it comes to buying stamps I'm a sucker for items that are oddball and not easily identified, whether that be the country that issued them or more often what their purpose was. I prefer to buy auction lots, collections and estates rather than a single or set of stamps and lots of times I find items within that fall into the hard to identify category as well. If I end up with enough similar items that I haven't been able to learn enough about online or through asking others then that usually helps to point me in the direction of my next purchase. Sometimes if I'm lucky enough, one of those oddball items that I've purchased even though it doesn't fit into my collections, will have enough value to cover my purchase cost and/or help to offset or pay for whatever reference book I bought. Even if it doesn't I get almost as much enjoyment out of books as the stamps. I do have a decent amount of catalogs and reference books here, albeit an extremely mixed bag of countries/topics, that hopefully I'll be able to help with some identification/value questions down the road. Rick Rick, you have paraphrased my exact collecting interests and general philatelic purchasing tendencies!I will post my philatelic refernce library list when time permits. I have been making arrangements with a seasoned local collector for a somewhat extensive accumulation of literature which I will expound on when I pick it up! --Jim

would you have forgery information on the 1852 Denmark Essays by Ferslow? Thanks. Sure. I have gathered some info here: stampforgeries.com/denmark-essays/The short version of it is that fewer than 100 genuine were printed, so expect yours to be reprints (or forgeries) They are almost never correctly identified as reprints on auction sites.

Some more great books. I think this first one has been cited here before in our discussions on Confederate forgeries. And this big bad boy should come in handy deciphering US RPOs. First I just need to decipher the book itself. A huge study (over 400 pages) on US Route and Station Agent postmarks, published by the Mobile Post Office Society. Figured I'd never see one again, so I HAD to pick it up. It barely fit on my scanner Both these came from a used book store in the Wicker Park area of Chicago, found on our last day there. FYI for any of you in the Chicago area, there are still some nice philatelic books available there! Myopic Books on Milwaukee Ave. Go up to the third floor, in the 'collections' area. I'd have bought more, but the wife and my budget were 'agin' me!
