I've misplaced my book on Canadian Machine Cancels. Anyone seen it? I've looked in my library, it's not there either. It's probably hanging out with my lost spade tongs from 1986. (..and the dish ran away with the spoon) I'm warming to the idea of parallel universes, and stuff sometimes flip over. I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Kelleher's Collectors ConnectionThe second issue of this new philatelic publication graced my mailbox this afternoon and an initial skim convinced me that it was of sufficient quality to share with our membership. The magazine will be published bi-monthly and distributed to Kelleher's worldwide mailing list as well as to the subscribers to Linn's Stamp News. The first two issues are available online: Vol. One, No. 1; Vol. One, No. 2.

You all know I'm cheap about buying more books but, I found this one devoted to the "Mountie" stamp. Including very nice images I'm a bit pressed on my middle school French though.

Marrying history, to many of the Classic world stamp vignettes, I would recommend this book. Fabulous reading, puts world history into manageable and easy read chunks. From Bombay to Brazil, the Cod grounds of Newfoundland, Gold and slavery. I couldn't put it down. The famous Williams brothers.........

If anyone is looking for it, I found out that it was reprinted in 1961 with the title The establishment of the European hegemony, 1415-1715 : trade and exploration in the age of the Renaissance. Selling on Amazon US. Used starting at 0.01 + shipping.

Wow! Interesting, my old 40c dog eared will last till I'm gone Just to expand, there is no reference to stamps at all, but if you have a history bent, (which most collector's have) then as you read, stamp images will come to mind, (Like the advance around Africa by Henry the Navigator (who never went to sea) of Portugal. I recall twice taking the book to offset the pain of waiting in a doctor's surgery, read it on 2 occaisions in 2 days, couldn't put it down.

With working on Bulgaria the past few weeks, I had to add this to my library. Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire to the Kingdom, History, stamps and postal history, 1840 -1908by Roberto Sciaky, published 2006, sadly a few months after the author passed away. It has a nice concise history of Bulgaria for the period covered. It also includes an appendix of pre-Bulgaria Ottoman, Bulgarian, and town cancels.

Picked these up today (my daughter took me to a used book store in the city where she's going to university. It's AWESOME!). Don't know if these will be useful, but I figure more literature can't hurt. Except my bookshelves, of course. Scott's New Handbook For Philatelists (1966 - first printing!). Has some interesting info and images about the designs of the Prominent Americans Series of 1966. Some of the unused designs were actually very nice. Stamp Collecting as a Hobby by Burton Hobson1986 And a 1947 Canada Official Postal Guide (Regulations of the Post Office - Rates of Postage and other information). I've seen earlier editions of this (nineteenth century) for quite a bit of cash. This was relatively cheap, and comes with four supplements.

Nice finds, James. I love going to used bookstores, but I've never found any stamp related titles in any that I've visited.

This one had quite a few, though mostly old catalogues (including a 1904 Stanley Gibbons! I was sorely tempted, but really WHAT would I possibly do with it). I will certainly be going back there.

Hi James, that Burton Hobson book used to be at my local library. I think I read it 6 times. . Very entertaining. I love those old books, especially when they talk prices for things like albums and accessories. It sounds so cheap today, but I remember thinking $15 was huge money back then! Mark

Here's something a little different regarding a Philatelic library: I picked up a mystery novel titled "The Chalon Heads: A Kathy and Brock Mystery" by Barry Maitland. (google it) No it is not a reference item or catalog, but it has something to do with stamps. It is currently in my philatelic library, but I picked it up with the intention of passing it along to some fellow "stamp collector" that may be interested in this sort of thing. It is searching for a philatelic library to join somewhere. If there is interested in this book, I'll list it in the giveaway section.

Numeral Cancellations of the British Empire Kay Horowicz has some pretty impressive philatelic productions behind her, There is hardly any information about her. I like her choice of Illustrator.

I will point out that I posted Chris West's Britain book back on page 3 of this thread. Now I'll have to go find a copy of the US version. Never ends does it (I hope not!)
...also, I've been delving into my US cover lately. I need some good reference material on early to mid 20th century machine cancels. Any recommendations would be welcome!
