I apologize if this one has been posted before, but I couldn't find any reference to this with a search. For me, part of the fun of collecting commemorative stamps is learning about a country's history and culture. So it helps to know what the stamps are commemorating. The book " The Commemorative Stamps of the World" by James H. Lyons, published in 1914, provides information about most commemorative stamps issued worldwide up to about 1910 or so. It is in Google books can be accessed as a free ebook. The cover An excerpt from his discussion of the U.S. Trans-Mississippi issue

Jen B Nice book Jen, can "ebooks" be downloaded by North Americans? or just online reading? There is some controversy about "Western cattle in a storm" ? I recall it being found as a Scottish painting? I am surprised I do not have mention of it in my database.

The cattle in storm created some minor controversy as it was adapted from a Scottish 1887 James McWhirter Painting entitled The Vanguard Another "controversial" stamp of the series was the Farming in the West The whole series has controversies. Since the Fractional stamp rule that no living person should be depicted, the stamp "unknowingly" went against this It was later found that several of the persons depicted could be identified from a period photograph The main person was Evan Nybakken - I believe he was the foreman Technically he is now the first living person depicted on a US stamp - a rule that has since then been modified several times

thanks falschung,I have now book marked a volume 22 on Amazon. I guess I've been influenced by my friends here. I now purchase about a book /month up from a book/decade. Good thing for me I didn't focus on too many areas I'd need a full fledged library building.

Nice book Jen, can "ebooks" be downloaded by North Americans? or just online reading? rod222 Google "ebooks" can be downloaded from the Google Books page. Once you load the book, select the drop down menu on the "gear" icon in the upper right of the screen. One of the options is to download as a pdf. I've downloaded the book. Let me know if you would like a copy and I can email it to you.

I finally broke down and purchased a 2nd Edition (June 1984), Mellone's Specialized Cachet Catalog of First Day Covers of the 1940s, Volume I, 1940-1947 (I've been using 3 photocopied pages for my Iwo Jima collection). The catalog covers Scott 859 through 946. For each stamp, pictures and unique numbers are provided of all first day cachets known at the time of publication, along with the designer's name and an approximate price derived from dealers' price lists and the author's knowledge of the FDC market.

Vance's price looks about right, but I think his is the original edition. Lost out on a number of items at Maresch's a couple of weeks ago to Vance. He's one tough/skilled bidder! From the book plate on the inside cover of this book, it looks to have belonged to well known American Philatelist W. Wilson Hulme. postalmuseum.si.edu/w-wilson-hulme-II.html

Lost out on a number of items at Maresch's a couple of weeks ago to Vance. He's one tough/skilled bidder! And a principled man, as well. When I was at a Maresch auction, more than once Vance upped his own bid if there wasn't any interest in the item. That way the seller got a better price for his item (good for the collector community) while Vance still got a "good enough" price for the piece (good for Vance). Ryan

The Vincent Greene Foundation had a book sale last week. This is one of the publications I was able to pick up. A 1977 Quarterman Publications reprint of a 1941 American Philatelic Society book. Interesting stuff. Many thanks to Kathy, Garfield, and the rest of the bunch there. It's always a pleasure to drop in and chat!

Remember that 1904 Stanley Gibbons catalogue I mentioned back in February (page 5 of this thread) that I saw in a used book store that my daughter took me to? Well, had lunch with her today, and she said, 'Dad, after lunch can we go to that used book store? There's a book I need to get for school.' Well..... .......what is WRONG with me?

Drat & blast, wish I knew about this used book store. You have Part II - guess who has had the 1904 Part I in his library for 8 or 10 years .... Ryan
