Remember that 1904 Stanley Gibbons catalogue I mentioned back in February (page 5 of this thread) that I saw in a used book store that my daughter took me to? Drat & blast, wish I knew about this used book store. You have Part II - guess who has had the 1904 Part I in his library for 8 or 10 years .... And guess who now has both Part I & Part II in his library - yay me! Well, mostly yay jamesw, he did the hard part. All I had to do was open my mail. Thanks very much, James! Ryan

Flew to New York City this past weekend with my lovely wife to celebrate her birthday. Just an hour and a half flight from Toronto. Since it was her weekend, there was no stamping! But I did manage to get her to allow me 10 minutes in a book store we stumbled across on 59th St. and was able to come out with this little volume 'The Organization of the Confederate Post Office Department at Montgomery and a story of the Thomas Welsh Provisional Stamped Envelope' (really, that's the title) written by Peter A. Brannon (self published by Mr Brannon in 1960). Not a total right off, philatelically speaking.

I have added Scott 2016 United States Pocket Stamp Catalogue to my library. I love this book. It lays flat and is spiral bound with 4 little tick boxes after each stamp and little columns above the tick boxes so you can list what the tick is for. Although it is to big to fit in any of my pockets. LOL

Volume 1 of the American Stampless Cover Catalog was acquired several years ago during my "stampless folded letter" phase. The catalog is available online. Volume 2 is also available.

Just acquired this signed copy of "Roving the Stamp World" by A. Eugene Michel. Michel contributed to many philatelic publications, including H. L Lindquist's magazine Stamps. Michel died in 1939 and his estate donated his collection of worldwide postal stationery to the Smithsonian Institution in 1940. The collection consisted of 143 volumes containing over 40,000 objects covering the period 1845 to 1940.

This is the latest addition to my library, sort of...the disc arrived yesterday but I couldn't open it on either of my computers. A replacement is on the way and I'm looking forward to its arrival. I recently acquired a large amount of Boys Ranch and Boys Town material and I need the catalog to properly identify the stamps. UPDATE: The replacement disc has arrived and it is functional!

This 9" x 11" hardbound catalog for Nutmeg Stamp Auctions' Public & Mail Auction 27 held June 21-23, 2000 arrived today. The sale involved disposition of the Jon E. Bischel collection of postally-used Civil War patriotic covers. Its 380+ glossy pages contain over 6,000 lots with each lot being shown with a color image. I found the book on Amazon and thought it might be useful in lieu of a catalog so I bought it for the amazingly low price of $8.99, delivery included!

Well, nothing too sophisticated in this example, but here is a copy of the first book on stamp collecting that I ever read. The book was originally published in 1940, and I first read it around 1968-1969. It was the only book about stamp collecting in the small library at my elementary school. I liked it so much that I read it several times back then.
Then, about 35-40 years later, I found this copy of that book in a bargain bin at the WESTPEX Stamp Show in San Francisco for 50 cents! I have read it again since then; I always find it fun to pick it up and read a chapter. The book is rather dated, of course, but I love the old black-and-white illustrations, and the basics of stamp collecting still apply. It is a bit like looking into a 75-year-old philatelic time capsule.

I found this at a local bookstore last year. It is a very good interesting and a reference for both beginners and advanced collectors with basic knowledge of paper, watermarks, stamp design, printing types, inks and color and gum. This is a 1990 edition and although the dust cover is a bit rough, the inside is very clean.

First of all, jimjung and zipper, I really like your latest acquisitions featured in your recent posts. Very nice references, indeed! As for me, I really haven't been all that active in getting new books, but due to the firstfrog2013 TSF Donation Auction lot which I had the privilege of winning earlier this year, I found the need to expand my library by adding the following item: I can also add that, at the moment, these 2009 Canadian Revenue Stamp Catalogues are available through Unitrade for only CAD $9.00 plus shipping, since there is now a new edition released this year. As this catalogue is only being updated every 8 years or so, I decided that the 2009 edition more than sufficed to help me identify any stamps from Frog which were not listed in the Unitrade catalogue.

Since revenue stamps aren't used any more your older catalogue will remain useful for a long time. Probably the only section that will see updated listings from 2009 onward will be the hunting / wildlife conservation section. Prices will continue to be updated and new discoveries will perhaps make small changes to the main body of listings but unless you're a real serious revenue collector (or you're a buyer of current hunting & fishing stamps), I bet you'll be happy with the 2009 edition and will see no need to ever update it. Thought I'd shown this, but updating my images here, I see I had not added it. Picked this booklet up a few years ago. A 1913 treatise on why the US Post Office should offer parcel post. Seems it worked.

As for me, I did not get this book pictured below for Christmas, but I did get it at a local stamp club meeting in Arizona in the last couple of months, and I thought it was quite interesting. This would be a nice item for any U.S. classics collector.

This recent acquisition is clearly not philatelic; however, it provides much-needed background information for my nascent hometown collection so I've included it in my philatelic library.

I often use local history books and newspapers for research on my philatelic material. Much of it has been found on-line. One source for my old covers has been newspaperarchive.com (pay site). Another good source on line is google books (free). I've modified this post to show an example of an advertisement I found from a period newspaper. I added a pdf of it into my page for the cover as it shows an ad for upload multiple pictures
