Love the truck, by the way!

No thanks James We must feel free and comfortable to dispose of material, as we see fit. I'll see how the auction goes, but to be frank, one always rethinks with singleton stamps with shipping that's $5 I have adjusted my sales regarding this, and often add "padding" Postage has been doubling the price of every stamp I buy in the past year or so. I've had to curb my collection of US precancels for this very thing.

A couple higher-value Victorias. Judicature Fees 5 pounds: Police Courts 2 shillings: I suspect that this is the 1882 series. The earlier issue is listed as Dark Green. It also fits with the puncture 1893 cancel.

Thanks for that. According to Forbin, the low values have a garter watermark, the middle values have a "VR" watermark, and the pound values have a balance (scales) watermark.
As near as I can tell from Google Books, the fee was based on a filing fee for the size of the action you were maintaining in court. Perhaps someone with a more-direct familiarity with English courts can add some perspective...
[edit: Actually, Forbin says that the low values have a jarretierre watermark...I had to google that. When you Google the french word for garter, be prepared...]

Revenues. We can thank the Dutch for this form of Taxation, along with Tulips (bulbs once more valuable than Gold) and Coffee Houses. Circa 1694
In Great Britain, a board of Commissioner of Stamps was established, whose duty was to arrange the supply of stamped stationery to the public. The stamp proved that tax was paid, and added a form of legality to the document.
Distributors were appointed in major cities or on a County basis. At first the work was not too onerous, For instance, the Distributor for Westmorland (Cumbria) also found the time to write poems.
I shan't tell you his name, but in 1804 he wrote this poem, the 5th most popular nations' poem in 1955
I WANDERED lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed--and gazed--but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

Common Law 2-shilling Victoria: Forbin lists this issue as commencing in 1866, and if I'm reading the catalogue right, it would be violet, or violet on bluish paper. Anyone else think this might be the bluish paper?

Anyone else think this might be the bluish paper? 1866 Common Law Courts Usual Cancels : Manuscript, Oval Cachet Scarcer cancels : Circular cachet, boxed oblong cachet Typo De La Rue Wmk Scales P14 1875- Replaced by Judicature Fee Stamps Barefoot #5 CV 50c 1989 No mention of paper. For blued paper I would suggest the best procedure to be, scan the back of the stamp, alongside a known white paper. Cancellations, stamp design can trick the naked eye regarding colour and flyspecking design. This only works (naturally) for blued paper, not blued surface paper (Austria if memory serves) Philatelic verbiage : "Surface toned paper"

I don't trust Forbin over Barefoot for GB material, so I'll go with one type.

Consular Service fee, ten shillings, used in Tangier. That's curious. I'd swear that top curve ended in an "E" However, must be 1886 Queen Victoria Surcharge Sterling Overprint Barefoot #46 10/- on 10/- Green and Carmine Used Europe Africa and the Americas. Here's a pair of British National Health Insurance revenue stamps. At the time, employed persons made regular contributions to a health and employment insurance fund and stamps were affixed to a card as proof of contribution. If you lost your job, you were "given your card" and sent on your way. These two stamps perhaps belonged to someone of little means - 6 pence per week is a fairly small contribution, I would think. As it turns out, I only have a Barefoot catalogue for the Commonwealth and it doesn't include any listings for Great Britain itself. Perhaps someone else can tell me when these particular stamps were issued? In the meantime, have a look at the Wikipedia article for the UK's National Insurance for a bit of a history lesson. There is also a gallery page showing a number of different years of issue. The 1920 stamps shown are similar to mine except my stamps show a shaded value tablet with white numerals. Ryan

This 6p revenue was included in the "extra stuff" sent by bobby1948 with the pages from his recent giveaway. I believe the numbers on the cancellation represent the date of cancel (May 19, 1905) but would appreciate confirmation. Also, can anyone tell me what the "H" on the stamp and the "K" on the cancel represent? Lastly, if it isn't too much trouble, a catalog # would be helpful.
