"The world's first embroidery stamp, issued June 21, 2000" celebrating St. Gallen embroidery What was interesting (to me, at least), is that the machine that made these used 340 needles and made 340 stamps at a time, running at 200 revolutions per minute. I didn't know that until after I'd bought it. Not sure why I bought it, frankly, but I'd seen it in images from time to time and thought it might be interesting to own.

And now that you've pointed it out, I'm going to have to get one. Don't want to be the only kid on the block without one!

1909 With distant echoes from Mulready...................... Inauguration of the UPU Monument Berne, Switzerland (UPU = Universal Postal Union) Postcard Switzerland is drawn, with castellated Tiara and plaited tresses, she lounges at the base of the Monument. The UPU established that: There should be a uniform flat rate to mail a letter anywhere in the world Postal authorities should give equal treatment to foreign and domestic mail Each country should retain all money it has collected for international postage.

Here is a mystery, snatched cheap on Ebay.de. In the center is a normal 10c red Helvetia regular (Z120 or M114), cancelled 14 May 1910. Two strangenesses, that I see: the cancel is centered, in violation of normal Swiss Post practice, and the stamp is pasted in the blank of a printed green frame, reading ‘Le cafe est un aliment, la chicoree est une drogue’ (Coffee is a food, chicory is a drug).
Aside from advertising the benefits of coffee and evil of drinking chicory, what is it? My guess is an advertising frame, somewhat like the advertising tabs (bandelettes) the Belgians used to love, but rather generic. So much for my efforts. So...
Regardless, it is a wonderful item; leaves me less time to think about today's headlines.

It is a French stamp collar ( porte timbres). Note its similarity to the anti-alcohol collar shown here.

The similarity to the prohibitionist example is no less revealing. My appreication to you and William M. Senkus

Scott lists this stamp as no. 168 from the 1914 William Tell set. The stamp on the left shows the face of the stamp from my collection and the stamp on the right is an example I pulled from a glassine I have been looking through. The stamp on the right has diagonal lines on the back of the stamp that I cannot explain. I know that some stamps of this set also have a grilled gum version though this green on buff paper 10 centimes is not supposed to be one of them. Also, the grills are supposed be either horizontal or vertical according to the Scott catalog. Does anyone know what these diagonal lines are? Also the stamp is used and without gum.

That's not a grill. It's a stamp that someone put into a photo album - one with sticky/magnetic pages. Those lines are the residual damage from that kind of album.
Don't EVER put a stamp into a photo album with those type of pages!!

Ah, yes. Thank you mdroth. Now that I look at it I should have realized. I had a childhood friend that kept his stamps in a photo album. I will count this one as damaged.

A nice, modern (2018) definitive Swiss stamp showing a railway station. It's "Alp Grüm" from the Rethic Railways on the canton of Grisons (also, known as Graubungen) SE Switzerland.

A pretty Geneva cover to Lyon, showing the 30 centimes rate to neighboring countries. If I have it right, from Marc Cougnard, a lecturer at the theology University of Geneve and trader on the side--back when professors were not paid a living wage--to a broker in Lyon.

I see that this has been shown as part of a page by cursus I found it in a stock book of France I recently acquired. It took some time to determine 'what" it was as it doesn't indicate Helvetia (Switzerland... which I do not collect), and I was fairly certain it was not a stamp of France. Scott 99 (I think... it doesn't seem to meet the criteria Scott gives for the for the re-engraved Cancellation looks to be Brunnen, July (VII) 27, 1900

Just to show you some Helvetia Steiner pages (my progress) and with the recent Colnect order from tobben63 there should be more spaces filled, after which I will fill on an individual basis, based on availability One who is working with Steiner pages (classic) realizes that some varieties are not there - My stamp software has the details (so I include them) and mount the stamp on page. Do have some more pages to show but this is a sample...not going into the earlier stamps as they ae too sparse ........maybe some help from aficionados........thanks for the likes as I am deleting the same page - changes !! That's life with Steiner René

kasvik has already shown this 10 centimes value with post mark date of 21.09.1873 - one of the set from what I believe is the 1867 to 1881 values, and depending on your interpretation of which shade of 'rose', the example shown now is possibly either SG 95 or 96. It was more the date shown in the post mark that appears unusual perhaps - the second digit which I assume is supposed to be for January, looks more like a letter T. Anyone have any thoughts please? thanks. The city is possibly meant to read Bremgarten?
