Ok, thread #2 is to review binders for people who want to make their own album pages and buy a binder other than the standard Avery. Again, borrowing my posts from another forum, and hoping others will add to the thread.

Bindertek Barrister BinderSo, the Bindertek Barrister Binder I order for my custom stamp sheets came in. I thought I would share some pictures and comments on the binder. Bindertek makes a whole mess of different solid colored binders, but their slip cases are only in black. I ordered the Barrister binder, because it was black and had a nice design on the spine. The bottom part of the spine has a metal reinforced ring in it, to make it easy to pull the binder out of the slip case: The binder I got was a 2" binder. The sides are completely black. The binder is also pretty stiff and the edges opposite the spiine do not touch when the binder is left closed. The binder may loosen up over time, but I really don't have an issue with the way they sit now. The bottom edge of the binder, the side that slides against the bottom of the slip or shelf is metal reinforced, which is a nice touch. The interior of the binder reveals that this is an office binder and not a scrapbooking/collecting binder, as you can see from these photos: The binder rings are D rings mounted to the back of the binder, and not the spine, which seems to be the standard with binders these days. The rings open easily using the handle on the bottom, and the whole mechanism seems top notch. Overall, I think the binder and great and seem extremely durable. The only thing I don't like about them is the writing on the inside, which I cold probably cover over by gluing a thick piece of cardstock over it. The 2" three ring binder cost me $14.00. The slip case was another $10.00 and shipping was $6.26. I signed up for their mailing list and got a 10% off coupon, so the binder cost me $27.86 to purchase, which is a little cheaper than a Lighthouse Vario F binder. Sadly I don't have a Vario F to compare it against. Overall, I give the binder an A-.

NakedBinderIn my continuous attempts to hack the perfect stamp album, I am always on a quest to find the perfect binder to onto the album. Well, today, my shipment of binders from nakedbinder.com came in. So I thought I should write something up. I'm going to be doing a lot of comparison to the Bindertek Barrister Binder, so you might want to read up on my review of that binder first, which I posted on stampcommunity.org: www.stampcommunity.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17401According to nakedbinder.com, their binders are: [*]Recycled: We use only board that is100% post consumer waste and 100% recycled.[/*][*]FSC Certified: Nearly all of our materials are FSC certified.[/*][*]Stronger: Our binders have been tested to 250,000 flexes without fail, making them perhaps the strongest 3-ring binder in the world.[/*][*]No Plastics: Naked Binder does not use plastics, vinyl or other toxins in manufacturing or shipping so everything is easily returned to the recycling stream. This takes pressure off of your waste management system, landfills and reduces the need for new production of virgin resources.[/*][*]Recyclable: Our binders are 100% recyclable.[/*][*]Innovating: We constantly test new materials to craft the most environmentally safe products that last longer, work better and look great.[/*][*]Local: All of our products are made in the USA, minimizing world wide travel to get to you. Our manufacturing plant is in Des Moines IA.[/*] OutsideThe binders themselves are similar to Bindertek binders, since they are made from one piece that is folded at the hinges, and are coated in tight paper. I ordered the fern binder, which looks like this: The binder is pretty flexible and tends to sit open when stood up, though it's not as stiff as the Bindertek binder: Like the Bindertek, there is pull ring in the spine, but it is not metal reinforced. This is probably done to keep the binder recyclable. The binder also does not have the metal edge on the bottom of the binder to protect it from damage. Not a big deal for me personally. The InsideWhen you open up the binder, you see a nice black interior, and a set of back mounted D rings. To open the rings, you need to pull on the top and bottom handle. The rings do not open very smoothly. The rings are also the cheaper type rings (the same ones that Mystic chose to use) Though the rings are D rings, I prefer the "ball and socket" type closing rings, such as these: PricingThe binder that I bought, the Fern Classic Binder with 1.5" rings cost $9.00, which is a pretty good price. If I had bought the actual naked binder, the price would have come down to $7.50. The snag I ran into was shipping. Shipping was going to cost $12.00. By comparison, the Bindertek binder costs $12.00 and the shipping is $6.30. So, to take advantage of the cheaper price of the nakedbinder, you'll need to buy more than one. ConclusionOverall, I think the nakedbinder is a much better binder than what you get at your typical office supply chain. It looks nicer, and I think it's more durable. It's not quite as nice as the Bindertek binder, but it is recycled, and is a better deal if you buy more than one of them.

"Slip case $10 ! that is amazing, that's a bargain. Only problem I have with it, I prefer 4 ring binders (which are hard to get) shame they could not have thrown in an extra ring. Overall price is a winner bar that.

Got some binders in the mail, so I thought i would add to the binder review thread.
First up, the Scott National/Specialty Binder.
First some pictures, then comments:
This binder is built like a tank. It's HEAVY. Easily the heaviest binder I have ever held. I'm pretty sure the entire binder is metal with a faux leather cover over the binder. The rings are really heavy duty zig-zag style o-rings mounted to the spine. To open them, you need to pull on the tab on the top and bottom.
The binder is significantly larger than a standard binder. It's 303 mm tall and over 310 mm wide.
I bought the large binder and paid $35.19 from the Amos Advantage website.
Your grandchildren will inherit this binder from your kids.
I didn't want to like this binder. It didn't have ball and socket rings. It didn't have D-rings. But this binder just scream quality. And it should at $35 for one binder.
There's a lot to like here. But it's expensive. it would be a good option if you collect one country and just need a few binders.
And if your stamp pages are just US Letter size, the binder looks massive around it:
So, a thumbs up if you can afford it.

Ok, needed to add a bit more to the Scott Binder. It's ridiculously large. The binder makes me want to make larger pages for my collection, but I am limited to 8½x11 or A4 because I don't have a large format printer. Just putting letter size paper in the binder seems like a huge waste.
It's a seriously heavy duty binder, and as this style of binder goes it looks like it may be a bargain.
I did more Googling than I want to admit on this binder and I have learned that the hinge style for this binder is called "piano hinge" and the tight faux leather cover on it is called casebound. The only other binder I can find that is casebound with piano hinges is made by Wilson Jones, and it sells for more than $50.00 for one binder.
I found a piano hinge binder with a leather cover for over $100.00.
I spent a lot of time tapping the front and back of the binder and there is definitely metal in there. I don't think it's all metal. It's too thick for that. The binder would be REALLY heavy if the front and back we all metal. I think there is a piece of either plastic, wood, or fiberboard pressed up against the metal and then the whole thing is wrapped in a heavy duty leather-like wrap.
It's an expensive binder at $35.19. But for what it is, it's cheaper that similar binders made by other manufacturers.

A note about the Bindertek binders. I stopped using them, because their shipping got to be pretty darn expensive. The binder have come up in price a little. A 2" binder costs $16.00 now. But the shipping seems to be more reasonable. I can ship two binder to my door for $9.00 now. 3 binders is also $9.00 shipping.
For a while there, binders were $14.00 with $10.00 shipping. And when you ordered two more binders, the shipping didn't go down much per unit.
So, give BinderTek another look.

I just looked around for some of these. BinderTek is still around; their 3-ring binders are all gathered under the One-Touch name. A 2" binder is $16, or $26 with a slip case. A 4" binder is $20, or $33 with a slip case. If in between stamp sessions you're training for the next World's Strongest Man championship, a 5.5" binder is $25; there doesn't appear to be a slip case for it. So basically what Andy Pastuszak Andy posted back in 2013 is still quite accurate. Naked Binder is at Corporate Image - Presentation is Everything, which I think is a bizarre name for sustainable-binder advocates. I'm pretty tired now and I didn't wander around their site, but I'm happy to confirm that they are still among the living. Avery binders cost $8 or $9 for the 2" ones last time I went binder-shopping, so all in all, these alternative products aren't ridiculously expensive by comparison.

Scott Minuteman Binder
Ok, I picked up a Scott Minuteman binder too. This one probably has limited appeal, since it's clearly branded for the Scott Minuteman album. Here are some pictures:
The binder is pretty much a standard vinyl binder that's slightly wider than a regular binder by about a 1/2".
The binder rings are back mounted D rings with zig-zag closures on them.
The binder comes with one flat page lifer.
It's a good binder, but nothing particularly special. The binder cost me $15.19.
If you want the branding, then it's probably worth it. Otherwise, i would just go with a heavy duty binder from Avery or a store brand.

I really don't like 2 post binders, but I always liked the look of design of the Scott Minuteman binder.
I thought the Master Canada album looked cool too:
I wonder if there is any record of who posed for those illustrations.

Avery Heavy Duty Frame View BinderThe Avery Heavy Duty Frame View Binder is a mass-market product that you can easily order from Amazon.com or special ordered from Staples or Office Depot. I haven't found it on the shelf at any store. The binder has a leather-like material, and has two frames for inserting graphics to identify what's in the binder. One is on the front and the other is on the side. Unlike standard view binders, frame view binders put a nice frame around the graphic. The binder has a nice EZD Rings with ball and socket closures that are mounted to the back of the binder. The rings are very easy open if you use the EZD handle on the bottom of the rings. The binder has a nice feel to it, and just feels a little more quality than their standard heavy duty binder. I really like this binder, because it has EZD ball and socket rings, and I like the way the binder looks with the inserts customized. I paid $8.99 for 1 inch binders. The 2" binders cost $11.99 from Staples.

The first time I scrolled by that image, I thought the title was "Mister Canada". Or maybe that guy is Mister Canada himself, Prince Edward Vancouver of Brunswick. Remind me never to commit any major crimes in Canada. Look at that mug visage; he ain't cutting anybody no break!

The outside of the Grande binder looks great. But those rings are not quality binder rings. That actually looks identical to the Mystic Premium Binder, except for the color. www.mysticstamp.com/Products/Supplies/ESDC3/USA/The Mystic binder is only $35.95.

Ok, here are some pictures of the Mystic Premium Binder. Comments on it afterewards.
Binder Spine
SSide of slipcase with binder inserted

Closed Rings
Open Rings
Damage (Explained below)
Now for a small writeup
The binder and slipcase feel nice and have a premium look. The binder is not too heavy, but heavy enough not to feel cheap. The big issue with this binder is the rings. They are zig-zag style rings that do not have opening and closing pulls on the end. So, you need to pull them open by the rings. And the rings don't "lock closed." If you apply even a little pressure to the rings, they will separate. They don't pop open, but they do separate.
The damage you see in the last photo was done when I closed the rings and didn't notice the bottom ring wasn't line up properly. I closed it and put it in the slip case. The ring gouged the binder and got bent out of shape. I bent it back into shape after a while and now it seems OK. But I am not using this binder because I prefer the Avery Heavy Duty Frame View Binder.
I may put this up for sale. It's just collecting dust in my basement.

andy Pastuszak I've got a couple of the Avery Frame View binders but haven't purchased my Binderteks yet. What's your impression of the Barrister compared to the Avery? Do you favor one over the other? I like the fact that the Bindertek has a matching slipcase but I can order the Avery much cheaper with free shipping. I considered buying from Staples and having them shipped to the store but the closet location is 120+ miles away.

I just purchased this Recollections brand DR from a local arts & crafts store (Michaels USA). Its construction is robust and feels good to the touch. The boards are 12" high and just over 11" long.
