Many of you know that I love covers, and I do search out covers which, although may not be worth much, are interesting for one reason or another. Here is such a cover. David Jasnieski was born in 1943 and resided at 2025 Wabash Street, Michigan City, Indiana. Based on that fact, I am pretty sure that this cover was mailed by a parent. Mailed from Michigan City, Indiana to Tokyo, Japan in August, 1968, this letter required ten cents in postage; however an eight cent air mail stamp was applied. To make up the difference, two one-cent CANADIAN stamps were applied. It passed through the auto-canceller without a problem and off it went to Japan.

She would have been 24 or 25 years old by 1968 so I think she would be capable of sending a letter at that point. Neat cover though! How do you know it went to Japan? It's addressed to an Army Post Office in San Fransisco California. Is there perhaps a receiving (Rec'd.) mark on the back that indicates Japan? I'm very genuinely Curious and not just "picking nits" as it were.

What may throw someone off concerning this cover is the bottom line which reads "A.P.O. San Francisco, Cal. 96267". The 96267 is actually the zip code in San Francisco for Pacific area APO's; thus in this case the leading "A.P.O." is redundant. The second line of the address is the key - the 249th General Hospital was on Camp Drake, Tokyo, Japan. During the Viet Nam war (I was in US Air Force, 1962-1970), many wounded in Viet Nam were evacuated to Camp Drake. Camp Drake was closed not too long after the end of the Viet Nam war.

Is the Canadian stamp on the left torn a bit at the bottom? It looks like part of the postmark is underneath the stamp.

Good observation, Zulu! The lower left corner of the left stamp was folded over when the cover was cancelled, so part of the cancellation is on the gummed side under the numeral 1. I hate to refold it to get an image because doing so would weaken the corner even more.

I think the first time I viewed your post, I was on a tablet and didn't have the benefit of a nice, big monitor. I can make out the faint hint of a tear now. Oh boy, I see a member of the month award (or something equivalent) section coming soon!... We'll have to see yet? I thank you and will gracefully 1 accept your compliment. With all the quality knowledge and material being shared here, though, it would be impossible to single anyone out! 1. That's about the only thing I can do gracefully even though the name Susan apparently means "graceful lily"

I'm not angry really, just an exaggeration !! I do remember a certain Australian group, now defunct, that gave stars to members and then something more to those with the most stars. This and some other odd happenings just made me leave...and a number of others too. Now when I think of it, it makes me cringe. So when I saw your comment......I just, well I just cringed !!! I believe there's another group somewhere on the same lines......I tore up my invitation !! Memories eh !

I was only saying that in jest LB. I think the board is more attractive to actual collectors and Philatelists because it don't have a page of stupid smiley's or silly word association games. I like to get straight to the point- stamps.

Well, that worked. Went outside at midnight, tripped on the patio, fell face up hitting my head --- and yep! I SAW STARS!

I often change my chair at the computer, to allay back problems (different positions etc). I was using a plastic patio chair yesterday, and the blessed thing just cracked and collapsed in an instant, I found myself on the ground, legs askew, and seeing stars revolving as well.

I did the same thing as a kid in a greasy spoon diner in Edson, AB. I was swinging away at a fly that was pestering me, and ended up on the ground with broken chair parts all around. Yay for greasy spoon diners in Edson, AB. ha ha Ryan
