Hello Allan & Everyone, Hope I am reading your data correctly. Here is a town (Longstratton) you do not appear to have, and moreover, it is a squared circle. If this town happened to be in Wales or Scotland, would it show up in your database? Found another one, you have one Ruislip shown, mine is quite different:

Both these now added to the database
Longstratton is actually Long Stratton - note the dot between the two parts of the name used quite often in this general time period ...
Details for the office are as follows ...
By 1793 - post Office under Norwich By 1814 - Money Order Office & Post Town 1844 - numeral 473 allocated 23 December 1861 - Savings Bank 1870 - Telegraph Office. Code used = LMV1 August 1900 - Changed from Head Office to Railway Sub Office 1 August 1905 - Changed from Sub Office to Post Town 15 February 1921 - Post Office under Norwich
All this in the database

Anyone seen this type of cancel before ? Just curious. [Moderator edit - images links are broken and irretrievable]Same basic type - but with single code letter at the top These were probably used on circulars Later type - circa 1920s - without code at top Later type - 1922 ... As can be seen - used over a very long period in various forms .... Hope this helps .... Everything to this stage is now listed in the database Allan

Finally - there are now 19,000 British entries in the database ...
[Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]This cover extended the date range for the standard Registered London mark (left) and added a new entry for the 'From Hamburg' version ... To give you some idea of the scale of this project, as noted, there are now 19,000 British marks listed ... On my hard drive are several thousand images that need to be checked against the database and updates or additions made as required .... In addition to these on my hard drive, there are also those that I get direct by email and these are moved to their own folder and checked through in the same manner as I get time. Currently this folder has 27,522 emails - each of which has at least one picture / scan that needs checking ... I think I may be at this for a while ...
To get to this stage would not have been possible without the help of fellow collectors and for all those who have helped with a single mark, what may appear to be a minor update or with multiple scans, I can only offer my thanks for taking the time to help expand the details that the database contains ... I hope that users are finding the details useful and, (as I have said before), if you are looking up an office and want the details for that place added to the office details / history of the office, just post a request here and I will get them in place as requested. Some are being added as I come across them, but a request will be dealt with sooner to aid those using the data ... Once again, my thanks to all Regards .. Allan

The database continues to expand with this being the latest British entry [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]This added Helford as a new entry and also filled a gap for a missing scan for St Martin RSO There are now 19,032 British postmarks listed with over 88 percent illustrated .... A great number of updates have again been made to existing entries to expand the details ... Hope you all find this useful and would love to hear your thoughts / comments / observations ... Now 0250am .. so time to grab some sleep

The British postmarks in the database now total 19,069 I recently asked for thoughts / comments etc, etc ... and one thing that was requested was a record of the various types of Bishop Marks used at London and Edinburgh ... This seemed like a good idea to have the early marks illustrated, however, these marks contain no text to allow a search in the normal manner .. To overcome this and as a start in getting these listed, a search for *** will bring up these pre-stamp marks - which will now start to be added to the database [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]This item from 1799 is the latest addition .... (The period of use for the Hereford mark was also updated) Hope this extra information is useful to those who collect this area of postal history ... Regards ... Allan

Additions and updates to the database continue with there now being over 19,100 British postmarks listed .... [Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]This is the latest addition which added to the Bishop (type) mark and also added the split straight line Leominster .. dated 20 September 1790 With the listing of the Bishop Marks - it will be seen from the database that the *** search string is now followed by the year, ***1661, ***1779 etc, etc ... This has been done as it will 1 ... allow a search by specific year 2 ... ensure that the entries are grouped together by year and 3 ... allow me to easier move items around to get the entries in strict date order ... With regards to item (2) ... the database can be searched by year from the main search page but this will display all postmarks for the selected year rather than just the Bishop Marks .. I announced this addition to the database last night and there are already over 30 listed with at least another 40 plus to be added and several collectors already offering to scan items they have to add to the listing ... The London mark in its basic form was in use from circa 1661 to circa 1799 ... so about 138 years - and with each being hand-cut, that makes 138*365 = 50,370 examples required .... I wonder how many of these still exist ...
If any members here have examples, please post them on this thread and I will get the details added in ...

[Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]This from 11 July 1786 is the latest addition .... The Bishop marks now have 69 entries with some details at the heads of the relevant date sections to give additional information for the collector ... Happy hunting .... more will be added soon ...

With more updates made, the database continues to expand in terms of the information listed ...
There are now under 3,300 British postmarks listed that still require a picture
The additions made, along with various new entries, are additional dates and codes etc - thus expanding the periods of use for a number of marks used Some pictures of post offices have been added to a few entries along with details relating to the offices ...
Work continues .... Allan

[Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]This is the latest addition to the database and brings the total now to 19,300 British postmarks listed with well over 88 percent of these illustrated ... In addition to the new entries there has also been along the way updates to a number of the marks that were already in place, these being earlier and / or later dates or various other minor updates to codes etc as normally happens as I work through the scans I have on file ... My target for this year was 19,000 so I am happy that I have hammered this and am making good headway to the 20,000 mark ... Many thanks yet again for all the help people have given ... Allan

[Moderator edit - image link is broken and irretrievable]The latest addition to the British section of the database Red Lion St P Paid mark in blue In addition the double ring PAID mark at the left also added another code letter combination to that entry ... This now brings the total for GB to 19,400 entries ... In addition, as I have been doing updates, I have also added to the USA section .... This now included a great number of hand stamps that are known to be in the public domain, (there are also entries like this for GB). This information is useful as it provides the collector with the information, should they encounter an impression of a postmark that appears a little to good to be true ... I am aware of a number of others, (mainly British) that are in the public domain and theses will be added as I get details ...

Saint Neots, Cambridgeshire England July 28, 1904This is the small dial cancel with the letter A which I believe is a new variety for you Allan as well as an EKU. ' Saint Neots sits on the border between the counties of Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire. Bedfordshire was the last place my Scottish(Norse)/English ancestors lived before emigrating to America in the 16th century.

I think it may be a different type - so added as such it can always be removed later and the details merged if it proves not to be the case
