Aldgate BOE Parcel Cancel... Having recently spent a couple of weeks in Aldgate I had occasion to walk to Threadneedle street a few times - former home of the Bank Of England (BOE) its about 0.6 miles from Aldgate East tube station so I am assuming Aldgate would have been the local postal office covering the Bank of England

tobben63, this is a die head from a machine cancel which would normally have either a slogan or a wavy line obliterator alongside of it. I have a thread devoted to them here:- thestampforum.boards.net/thread/5473/gb-machine-cancel-slogans?page=1The database does contain these, but Allan's real passion is for early handstamps, Victorian and preferably earlier. When he began his little project elsewhere a couple of people spammed him into taking on board the full history of postmarks. At which point I confess I jumped on the bandwagon having previously strayed into the post Victorian usages. Thank you for thinking of his project and .

I agree - this is part of a roller machine cancel I am just back for a short while - then have to go out again - but this saved and I will take a look at the D/B entries later .... may still add it until the periods are more fully covered ... Thanks ... Allan

Can anybody tell me what kind of postmark this is? Have seen them before, but didn't explore any further. Hopefully somebody already did? Any help appreciated. Could be News Paper Branch?

Yes it is designed with the issue in 1870 of the small ½d to cover the new printed paper rate in mind, yours is described on page 9/10 of "London Postmarks on printed matter and parcels from 1870" by Curt N Fernau. A pdf is about to fill your email inbox.

An old Red Crown postmark on a SFL. NOTTINGHAM MR 28 1839 to London. Not sure why the Crown postmark was applied.

An old Red Crown postmark on a SFL. NOTTINGHAM MR 28 1839 to London. Not sure why the Crown postmark was applied. The red Crown is applied by a Post Office Inspector because there was an error in the rate charged for the letter … an "INSPECTOR'S MARK" . In this case the rate looks like it was originally 10d and then changed to 1/8 d (one shilling and eightpence = 20 pence) ie the inspector rated it as a double letter

feebletodix: What is the postmark (the intertwined circle) used on this stamp called?

Due to Mrs Thatcher the GPO was broken up in the 80's into BT, Royal Mail, Parcelforce and Post Office Counter s Ltd. Each was a seperate business and Post Office Counters Ltd wanted to remove the cumbersome old ink pads and steel small single ring datestamps. So in the early 90's they rolled out a new style of handstamp to their offices which carry a small ink pad internally and are thus referred to as 'self-inking datestamps'.

I have always liked blocks of stamps, especially with good cancellations.I used to send letters and parcels quite regularly to the USA,and the stamps I used for postage were returned to me.This was back in the days when Royal Mail actually cancelled stamps..... Hi feebletodix:
Great parcel post cancel from Westgate! Where to you find the canceled stamps you post? Do you have a dealer saving these for you or are they out of mixtures?

Thanks
Most come from mixed lots, basically the leftovers after collectors and dealers have stripped a collection then thrown the rest in a box to get rid of them. The rest are from bundles of postcards.

Don......I believe ten pounds is the highest value stamp. You can still see copies for sale on Ebay at face value or just a little over face value.A lot were used on parcels so good cancels are harder to find.

It is surprising that high value stamps are not available in Post Offices given the price of registered mail overseas has risen to £7 to £11 these days. They generally use the white Horizon label. As anglobob says the £10 was used on parcels , now many parcels are handled by ParcelForce rarther than by Royal Mail and Parcel force does not use or accept postage stamps to pay the fee.

Is there a name for those postmarks that have the "woven" lines forming the circle?
