Date of Issue: Nov 29, 1972 This stamps is well known for the constant varieties. Unitrade only lists four of them. I am trying to determine if 610ii, 610iii, and 610iv appear on the same pane. [Yes they do - see below]. Of course 610i, the "broken door frame" appears on all stamps in column 4. I do know that the master press sheets had 3 or 4 different panes. Not all panes have 610ii to iv, but they do have some other varieties. 610i 610ii 610iii 610Iv Positions of Varieties: Pane 3 Pane 2610ii and 610iii also incorporate 610i

The Canadian Postal Archive lists that they have a set of three progressive proofs in panes of 200 stamps. This would be consistent with 4 panes of 50 to make a press sheet. Sadly, there is no digitized image of the panes. The only image is of a single stamp. I know in the past that you could make an appointment to go and view articles in the Postal Archive, but I am not sure if that is still possible. And the archive is housed in Ottawa, so I am not sure if that would even be practical for you. Here's the link to the record of the panes. If you wanted to arrange to view the articles, you would need the reference numbers contained herein: Kreighoff proressive proof panes.Just in case you want to pursue this, here's the link on booking an appointment: Library and Archives of Canada: Appointments

Thanks for pointing that out Westy. I have been to the digital archives often for older issues, but never thought of checking out the Kreighoff issue. So that confirms it, 4 panes of 50. I have two of the panes, which I will scan the varieties shortly. One or more of the above varieties may be on the 4th pane.

Hi BC, I have not seen 610ii, 610iii, and 610iv. But recently I sold a LR plate block of 6 that included 610i, 610ii, and 610iv. (GT2, 610p (1x tagged GT2), 610pi (3x tagged GT2, 'broken door frame on shed' variety), 610pii (1x tagged GT2, 'log in snow' variety [pos.39]), 610piv (1x tagged GT2, 'icicle on roof' variety [pos.45])) Here is a scan of the PB in question.

Thank you Stamporator! That proves they are all on the same pane. The tagged panes are the same as the untagged, in the layout.
Now to find out if 610iii (or 610piii) are on that same pane, or if it is on the 4th pane. It is not on pane 1 and 2, as I have both in complete sheets (tagged and untagged).

There is another known variety called the "Rock in the snow". It is located in upper right corner blocks (position 1), but I do not know which pane it is on. It is on either Pane 3 or Pane 4. [Has now been located on Pane 3].
It is not listed in Unitrade, but is listed on Jean Lafontaine's website: www.jlafontaine.com/index.php?lg=1&c=5&sbc=&page=5

I looked through my pile of those stamps and I found 6 copies of the `Extra Footprint`. I also spotted a blue dot just under the front of the red sleigh. It`s on all my 6 copies You may have already spotted this but I thought I would pass it on anyway...Alan. P.S....Great Thread! I was going to post a pic but my scanner packed it in.

Thanks Alan. I did not see the blue dot until you mentioned it. It is on my copies too. Tomorrow I will redo the scan and shift it down to show the two varieties.

"I was going to post a pic but my scanner packed it in"
I have an Epson Perfection V200, which appeared to have "packed it in" some time ago, I reset all factory defaults and a reboot, and we were apples again. Worth a shot.
Most scanners when tired seem to begin to show "moire" patterns on the scanned image.

I think the power supply is the culprit. I will do some testing tomorrow.

I updated the image of V1-1 (variety 1 on Pane 1) to include Alan's "blue ice under sleigh".
Rod, my scanner is an Epson Perfection 1260, 5 years old and still doing well.

Seems to be the scanner of choice for philatelists Brian, I have had a platen and globe go on a previous Epson, but the big plus for the machine, is the Seiko scanning software, Fabulous.

I have now received a scan of a pane from a collector (who is not a forum member), and the scan confirms that all four Unitrade listed varieties do appear on the same pane as I illustrated (610i, 610ii, 610iii and 610iv). In addition, that last variety I show, the "rock in the snow" ALSO appears on this pane in position 1. I call this Pane 3. I will adjust the illustration shortly. We still do not know the exact layout order of the panes on the press sheet.
Now we need an example of Pane 4 to see if any interesting varieties appear.

I have seen a few more multiples and partial panes of the Krieghoff stamp. They confirm the positions of the varieties on Pane 1, 2 and 3. As a summary, here are the layouts of the three known panes together. Panes 1, 2, 3, 4 (4 not shown) The varieties without a "610" number under them are not listed in Unitrade. Still nothing reported on Pane 4. If anyone has a lower right corner with NO varieties, I would assume it is from Pane 4. Update 2015.01.13It has since been learned that the order of the of the panes from the uncut sheet are: 1 2 3 4 I have edited my pane numbers to suit. 2 and 3 replace each other.

Actually Ryan, I don't really flyspeck that much, I am just obsessed with the Krieghoff issue lately. It has always fascinated me because it was considered one of the most beautiful of modern Canadian stamps when issued, and it was the first mint stamp sheet I ever purchased from Canada Post as a young collector, in 1972. Then it turned out to have perhaps the most constant varieties of any Canadian stamp ever issued.
Currently I am writing a piece for the BNAPS ESG Corgie Times, "revisiting" the varieties of this issue.
Now if I can find a Pane#4...

Here is an updated layout of the location of panes 1 to 4 in the press sheet. The margins are in yellow, and the cut lines in green. I have also changed the variety numbering, to actually be reflect the pane number and position. I have not shown all the varieties, I will continue to add some as I actually see them.
