Hello Everyone, My name is Jen and I'm primarily a general worldwide collector from Northern Virginia, USA. Like many others, I began my collecting as a kid, but then stopped for many years. I've stopped and started collecting many times over the years as time permitted. After college I concentrated on mint US. Don't ask me why, but I really love the issues from the 1920s thru 1930s. Once I had most of those, I sort of lost interest in the US. Then even later in the 90s, I got interested in collecting used worldwide. For a few years I had a lot of trading partners all over the world and had fun trading inexpensive used worldwide. That stopped when work and other commitments began taking more time. Now I'm starting up again as I have more free time. I still have packets from my trading partners in the 90s that haven't been processed..ack! Recently, I've been reading three excellent blogs on worldwide collecting (Big Blue 1840-1940, Filling Spaces, and Stamp Collecting Blog). I'm not sure which one it was, but one had a mention of this forum and I found my way here. It looks like there are several worldwide collectors here, so I thought this would be a good place to hang out and learn. I hesitated to join, as I don't feel that I'm an experienced enough collector that I could contribute anything worthwhile. I'm afraid that I'll just spend my forum time pestering the good folks here with basic questions. For my worldwide collecting, I concentrate on used or mint (inexpensive) issues from 1840 - 1960. I particularly like used stamps with clear cancels showing the location and date (SON CDS). I generally only buy items in the 1840 - 1860 range, but will collect up to 2000 if they come my way. With the internet, I've found that my ability to process the stamps I have and get them in my collection has slowed way down. For practically every stamp, I find myself looking up the subject on the internet, reading about it in Wikipedia or some such, then looking up the town if it shows on the cancel...takes forever. But I've found that it really increases my enjoyment of the hobby. So I just decided it isn't a race for me to get all these stamps in the album and that the process is the enjoyment. Part of my time problem may be all the other interests and hobbies I have. These include textiles (weaving, spinning, knitting), biking, hiking, US civil war history, and drawing and painting (botanical illustration). I think I may need to scale some of this back. Regards, Jen

Welcome Jen, I'm new here myself. Asking questions is just as much a contribution as giving answers. Gets us all thinking and maybe someone else that had the same question but was too shy to ask will get some help as well.

Welcome, Jen! It's a nice group of folks.
I think all or nearly all of the authors of the worldwide collecting blogs you mentioned actively participate on here, so you've come to the right place!
Please don't hesitate to ask any questions, or to just show us a stamp you like!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
Firstfrog2013 - it is hard to live in Virginia and not get interested in Civil war history. I lived in Richmond for a few years (many decades ago). At that time, there were still places along the James river in downtown Richmond that had never recovered from the Civil war. They were still just burned out ruins, left over from when the town burned during the evacuation of Lee's troops. Same was true for parts of Petersburg further to the south. I think those areas have all been preserved and turned into parks now.
Zuzu - Glad to hear that there is someone else here that enjoys botanical art on stamps. Those are some of my favorites too. I really like learning about plants from other areas.

That fruit you show, is the rambutan ( Thai "GNO" - เงาะ) which I think is the most delicious fruit in the world. It's a fruit salad on a twig. Absolutely scrumptious.

Thanks for sharing that info, Rod. I'm not sure it's imported here, but there are some Thai grocery stores (even supermarkets) in the area, so I'll keep an eye out for it! -- Dave

Absolutely scrumptious.Once upon a time I was in a hotel restaurant in South Korea - breakfast was a delicious brunch, filled with every kind of fruit imaginable, all kinds of stuff I didn't recognize. A Japanese salaryman with a wife and a couple of young kids was bold, he filled his plate with all this unknown stuff and sat down at a table across from me. When it came time to tackle the rambutan, he stabbed the thing with his knife and fork and promptly showered his forehead and his eyeglasses with juice, and the two kids laughed and laughed and fell off their chairs and couldn't eat anything more the rest of the time they were there. I've been leery of those things ever since! ha ha I have heard they taste similar to a lychee which is my favourite "exotic" fruit and is my immediate target any time I go into one of our excellent Asian markets here in Calgary. Lychee juice, lychee chew candies, lychee soda pop (Ramune!), lychee flavoured honey, those slurpity lychee coconut jelly things, etc etc etc, I buy it all .... Ryan

Jen your very fortunate to reside in such a historic area.I was further upstate til eight years ago and just stones throw from Saratoga site of major revolutionary war battlefield.Shame more of these sites were not preserved earlier. When kids were younger I packed everyone in a fifteen passenger van for trip to Gettysburgh.I should have left kids at home as I couldn't spend enough time walking in history there.Vow to get back there as well as Richmond area.

Thanks for the information on the rambutan. I've seen them in the Asian grocery store I go to around here, but didn't really know what they were -- fruit, vegetable, sea creature... I'll have to give them a try.

Firstfrog, hope you get back to Gettysburg. It is a very interesting place to visit and the park service does a great job with the tours. They even have private battlefield tour guides that will do a very in-depth private tours at a reasonable cost. I've never been on one, but have heard they are very good. Two of my great (3 times) uncles were killed in the battle of Gettysburg. They had the misfortune of being conscripted into the 26th North Carolina infantry, which suffered the highest casualty rate of any unit in the battle. When doing some family research I came across one of the widow's pension application. It made for fascinating reading, as it described the surroundings and what happened to her husband during the battle. It is a shame that more of the Revolutionary war sites weren't preserved. I've only been to a couple that I can think of - Cowpens in SC and Yorktown here in VA.
