This is my most recently acquired advertising cover. It was a gift to me from my Uncle Doug. "The first American paint maker, Devoe. founded USA" Advertising Cover from Curwensville, Pa. but they have it spelled Curw insville curiously? I recently lived in Curwensville and there is really nothing there anymore but I do enjoy local history so I was quick to accept it! Far be it from me to deny this poor thing a good home! Edited to add scan (below)This is MY SCAN. As an afterthought- August 24th, 1915 Due to the date I suspect this could be either a #461 (6/18/1915 6/24/1915 type I. 11 x 11 S/L flat plate 18.5-19 x 22 carmine, pale carmine) ?? www.1847usa.com/1908WashingtonIdentifier.htmwww.1847usa.com/washfrank/design3/d32p11.htm

Thats an interesting cover you have there ILS Have you noticed the way the stamp is afixed? Is it sending a message? Have alook at below Postage Stamp Position MeaningsRight side up=business Upside down=lovesick, lonesome or I love you Sideways, head to the right=love & kisses Sideways, head to the left=I promise not to leave you :-) Diagonal, towards the right=Won't you marry me? Diagonal, towards the left=Yes, I will Heres a link to another "set of meanings" Meaning of Stamp Position
I also remember see quite some time ago an image of an old postcard (like in the above link) that explained the meaning of the way stamps were positioned when they were placed on an envelope or card Maybe our "Master of Images" Mr Rod might have a copy of something like it

Yeah, I'm very aware of that stuff and done some lengthy posts on that very subject however, I don't think this was the case here huckles. It was most likely done quite hastily by a store employee writing to John Deere Plow Co. for an order or something?

...Advertising Cover from Curwensville, Pa. but they have it spelled Curw insville curiously? ... Consistent spelling doesn't appear to have been something that mattered to the Post Office Department. A search of the Postal Bulletins for "Curwinsville" resulted in 9 issuances with that spelling between March 1880 and October 1883 and a single bulletin with it spelled with an "i" in August 1932. A search on "Curwensville" resulted in 68 bulletins between August 1882 and December 1932 having that spelling and another 34 spelled with an "e" from 1933 to 2008.

Thank you Steve. That's some pretty comprehensive research there! lol I only lived there 3 years and isolated way out in "farm land ville" but it seems like it was hopping a hundred or so years ago when you stop and look at all the old buildings. A lot of them was stores but sadly and unceremoniously turned into apartments.

Nice one Jeff! It's always nice to get material from a place you can relate to. That's why I often look for Niagara covers. My old stomping grounds.
