Thanks for starting this thread -- I was unaware of these stamps. The Scott Specialized doesn't list them but there is a nice article/listing in the American Revenuer (you may already know this). The first stamp you show (Series J) is listed in that article as CB104. The second stamp is listed as Type 11A and is either CB118 (perf. 10) or CB122 (perf. 11).

I was not sure that there was any accounting for these items. I can give them a home now and not have them in the orphan pile. Thanks to everyone that contributed to this.

Indeed, thanks to "The Stamp Forum" administration and moderators for adopting a policy of "open policy" collecting. we are free to broadcast and show any pieces of paper that come under the shady grey area umbrella of stamp collecting (Sand Dunes too! ) But, especially thanks to those at "American Revenuer" I think a lot of study has preceded that catalogue, so that we can put to bed some of our "orphans" I reckon as soon as you catalogue something, you tend to enhance the longevity and respect of the article.

And feel better at the same time. I just hate having something hanging out in space - waiting for something definitive. And you are right about adding credence to the article.

I recently received this Customs baggage stamp in a mailing from one of our newest members, @bcoldren . This purple, perf. 11, type11A stamp from the lower right corner of a pane of 10 (2x5) is identified as CB125 in Hermann Ivester's catalog referenced previously.

It has two serial numbers and is rouletted in between, so it appears that 1/2 should have been attached to an item and 1/2 retained by customs. But I have only seen intact canceled copies. Can anyone explain this?

The below image is cut from the American Revenuer article that I referenced in my January 24, 2014 reply to Rod's post. The instructions for use that were printed on the booklet cover include the following: This would explain the existence of intact copies of the stamp. I am not sure why halves are not seen.

Here are some of my Custom seals. I have more in another book, but just not sure which book, and there are too many books to go through. LOL. I have collected revenues for about 20 years now and these are just part of revenue collecting to me. The first one I received in a revenue lot, I was wondering what it was, and what to do with it. Then I realized there was a whole area for Customs Stamp collecting. So, I get them when I see ones I don't have. As you can see, on the same page, I also have US Post office seals. These are another Cinderella of Revenue collecting to me. This is a page from my book of stamps that need to go into their respective books when I get time. I put stamps in this book, each page for a different area, until I get time to catalog them, and put them where they go. It keeps me from losing them at least.

This would explain the existence of intact copies of the stamp. I am not sure why halves are not seen. I wonder if they do exist, but most stamp collectors would look at them as a torn stamp? Which may or may not wind up in the trash can. I have never seen a half stamp myself, but there has to be some out there somewhere.

Reading further into the article, its author speculates:
Is it possible that Treasury waived that requirement via internal instruction without having modified the text on the booklet covers? Does anyone have the time to travel to the National Archives to research the issue? I’m afraid this may remain another unsolved mystery.

Interesting! I think unless we find one half tied to a document it's questionable.

Well, I found a few more of my customs stamps, added them all to one page now. There are even two sequentially numbered stamps at the top of the page. I know have more, where is always the problem!

These stamps were stumping me until I found this article on that other forum. Now they all make sense. ... You could have saved yourself some time by looking on this forum (the above post was originally made in a different thread).

Thank you Steve. It was actually a google search that took me to the other forum. Since it supplied the information I needed in the article, I didn't think to search here. Thanks for tying it all together.
edit/afterthough: I also really didn't know what I was looking at, so my google search of 'Customs Service' may not have brought me here anyway. But, I'm here now, so all good.

While searching for the bisects (posted in the DWI thread), I came across the below cover sent to the Purser of the S.S. Ariadne. I have never seen these “Inspected Baggage” labels before and they are not listed in Scott.

Just giving this thread a bump to show the post that ponso1 originally made in the DWI thread, but it seems a better fit here, and it revives an old thread that needed some attention! Edit: As an added thought, it seems to me quite unusual that U.S. Customs Inspected Baggage stamps would end up affixed to a cover. Does that seem unusual to anyone else, assuming that the primary purpose of these stamps (labels) would be to affix them to baggage?
