The Wood Carvings series are quite attractive. Indeed, a nice thematic could be had, with wood carvings on stamps. I think there exists some nice ones on Sweden too. When scientists increase human longevity to 160 yrs, I may be able to take this up (African wood carvings, inspired Picasso as well )

In uploading the following images and information I have used Donegan's Katanga Philatelist - A Specialized Catalogue of the "Etat du Katanga" Postal Issues as the primary reference source This is a limited edition Catalogue that was printed 15 January 1964 (First Edition) and lists the various issues of Katanga by "date of issue" order First Issue - "Technical CooperationDate of Issue: 12 September 1960 Quantity: 6,195 Sets Values: 2 different values of 3frs Perforation: 11 1/2 These stamps were issued by the former Belgian Congo early in 1960 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Commission for Technical Cooperation in Africa South of the Sahara (C.C.T.A.). They were printed for the colonial administration in photogravure by Helio Couvoisier Ltd of La Chaux de Fons Switzerland. They were overprinted for Katanga by the Imprimerie Imbelco of Elizabethville Katanga. The overprint measures 20mm by 6mm including the line under Katanga 1. 3fr gray and red (French inscription) 2. 3 fr gray and red (Flemish inscription)

I had not heard of this entity but do not collect French colonies. The question is if there is any postal history.

I had not heard of this entity but do not collect French colonies. The question is if there is any postal history. Hello Angore, (Former Belgian colony, not France) The State of Katanga also sometimes denoted as the Republic of Katanga, was a breakaway state that proclaimed its independence from Congo-Léopoldville on 11 July 1960 under Moise Tshombe, leader of the local Confédération des associations tribales du Katanga (CONAKAT) political party. The new Katangese state did not enjoy full support throughout the province and was constantly plagued by ethnic strife in its northernmost region. It was dissolved in 1963 following an invasion by United Nations Operation in the Congo (ONUC) forces, and reintegrated with the rest of the country as Katanga Province. I had not heard of this entity but do not collect French colonies. The question is if there is any postal history. There may be some. The postmark on the 50c stamp looks more like a postal marking than a CTO or a postmark from a ceremonial cover. But I can't imagine there'd be much. Although Katanga was supported by some Belgian mining companies and a few other private entities with interests in Congo's mineral resources, I'm not aware of Katanga having had official diplomatic relations with any other country, so relatively few pieces of mail would have gotten out of its own jurisdiction or been accepted elsewhere. Belgium itself would have been very careful to avoid any appearance of favoritism toward Katanga. I don't claim any systematic knowledge of postal history, but I've always kept an eye out for postmarks from otherwise little-known locales in Africa, and I've never seen an État de Katanga stamp on a cover that looked like it had ever been through the mail anywhere.

The postmark on the 50c stamp looks more like a postal marking than a CTO or a postmark from a ceremonial cover. But I can't imagine there'd be much. Once upon a time I bought a nice big Congo mixture from one of the big Danish sellers on eBay and it had a lot of postally-used stuff from both Congos in the 1960s. My envelope for Katanga contains quite a few copies of stamps that look like they've been postally cancelled. There's even one with a machine cancel and one with an inverted overprint! Hooray for inverted overprints! Miserable cellphone photo, but I was too lazy to fire up the wood-burning scanner ... Ryan
