General (Marshal) Joseph Joffre, Commnader-in-Chief of the French Forces on the Western Front during WW1. Popular leader by all accounts.

These arrived. French Post Office Training School Stamps. They are from different printings and papers and I have not sorted them out at all yet. I quite like the simplicity and colours.

1934 Fight Against Tuberculosis CinderellasI mentioned several days ago in the Whatcha Been Stamping thread that I did a salvage operation on some France Cinderellas while I was texting back and forth with Michael ( Londonbus1 ). I documented the process with photos, but I will find a more appropriate thread or sub-board for posting those. Below is a scan of the result of the process. This is a half of a booklet pane (a full France Cinderella pane is shown in the previous post by jimwentzell ) rescued from one of the "Box o' Stamps" tins which I received for my birthday, and it turned out rather well, I think, considering its poor condition when I got it. The person pictured on the stamp is Dr. Albert Calmette, MD, the French physician who discovered the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), a bacterium which was used in the Calmette-Guérin vaccine against tuberculosis. The inscription on the stamp calls Calmette the "Sauveur des Tout-Petits" which means "Savior of Infants", as the vaccine was normally administered to babies and very young children. Calmette died on 29 October 1933, so this stamp was issued to honor him the year after his passing. From a philatelic point of view, I think that the three-color stamps are very nicely designed and executed. I also really like the selvedge advertising, in this case for two major makers of chocolate, Nestlé and Suchard, although I note in this example that the Nestlé products advertised are "Lait sucré" (sweetened milk) and "Farine lactée" (milk-enriched flour). It occurs to me as I write this that perhaps, at the time, Nestlé milk products were used in the making of Suchard chocolate, and perhaps that is why the two companies both appear in advertising on the same pane.

Inside are twenty different vignettes (sorry for the pictures, I don't have access to my scanner for a while) I forgot I had these... the $ 90 asking price was quite high, but the dealer did give me a bit of a break! This was published in 1918 by the Société française de Secours aux blessés militaires or S.S.B.M. At the same time Delandre was creating his own Red Cross issues that would eventually be his downfall $90 is a nice jump from the original cost of 2 Francs of the booklet that was crossed off. This is a scan of the stamps but it might best be moved to the Red Cross section that already describes these. I have many of these so I might post some to the Red Cross thread Large image - click for full view

The Vignette below has been shown before in a different colour. As it is 'stamp Collecting' connected I thought it worth posting. Shows the thrice-weekly Stamp Market just off the Champs Elysee in Paris, the 'Marche aux Timbres'.

The 'Foire de Paris' or Paris Fair is a long-established retail fair and market held at the Porte de Versailles Exhibition Centre in Paris. The labels shown here can be found in Souvenir Sheets of 6 different designs. I have not yet ascertained if they were printed in larger sheets also. The fair was not held after the 1940 event was abandoned until the end of WWII. So quite why these labels were printed remains a mystery. But it was intended to have a Philatelic section as can be seen from the nice design. Printed by the excellent Gravure Institute of Paris. (Still, mysteries are to be solved, are they not. So still searching.....)

Aix-en-Provence Cinderellas Printed by Editions ARS Marseille, possibly 1930sIt has been a while since I posted any stamp images, so I thought I might do these, to keep this thread going, with an obvious local connection for me, since both of these monuments are walking distance from where I live at the moment. I got these stamps from one of the "Box o' Stamps" acquisitions during April, which were bought here in Aix. There are at least a couple of other featured sites as well, but these two are my favorites. I am planning to use these images as part of an article for an upcoming TSF Newsletter. In the meantime, Londonbus1 is already on the case, but as part of my research for the article, I am looking for any information about these poster stamps and their printer "Editions ARS Marseille". I did a web search, but other than some old books, mostly from the 1930s, I cannot find out much else about the maker, and have found no other images of the stamps at all. If any member has information about these stamps or the printer, I would be very glad to receive it.... hopefully, more to come! Left Stamp: "Place des Prêcheurs" (Preachers' Square), today is the site of the local food street market on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays Right Stamp: "Fontaine des 4 Dauphins" (Fountain of the 4 Dolphins), is a fountain that, funnily enough, features 4 dolphins in the design, located in a small square in the Mazarin Quarter of Aix

Aix-en-Provence Cinderellas Printed by Editions ARS Marseille, possibly 1930s (follow-up)After yesterday's post, I would like to comment on some additional things that I learned, in large part thanks to Michael ( Londonbus1 ): - "Editions ARS Marseille" either merged or were bought out in the 1990s, and I now have the new name
- There is a catalogue that lists the Aix poster stamps edited by Gaston DEGARDIN in 1978
Still more research to do to put together a high quality article, but just wanted to give a shout-out of thanks to Michael for all of his help in tracking down some important sources of information to help improve my submission. The other upside is that today's searches may have also yielded a source for some excellent literature on Cinderellas, which could be a great resource for all interested parties on TSF, once the true availability is confirmed. More to come....

I have just finished watching a 6-part series which centres on Beryllium so it was nice to come here and read the above post before slumbers. Glad it's going well Beryllium Guy.....and we all look forward to your article. In the meantime, here's another French Cinderella. You'll have to forgive some of the colours as my new scanner is just not very freindly. I will have to look for another or bring the old one back. I cannot scan Dark Blue or Lilac or any shades similar to those. They come out Black or Grey respectively. Sad. Londonbus1

La Semaine de l,Absent Towards the end of WW2,the French Resistance Council anounced that the week from Dec 24,1944 to Jan 1,1945 would be known as La Semaine de l,Absent...The week of the missing. This was to raise awareness of the fate of prisoners of war ,deportees and repatriated people.A poster was issued with symbolic features of barbed wire of the prison camps and the Cross of Lorraine for the French Resistance. I discovered this cinderella stamp....it is more like a mini sheet, measuring almost 6 by 3 inches. I do not know much more about this stamp but personally think it is a very attractive and impressive item in my collection

A cinderella stamp showing the paquebot SS Normandie, possibly issued in 1935 to commemorate Le Havre to New York service. A commemorative stamp was also issued by La Poste Francaise. I much prefer the cinderella version.

Thought I'd give anglobob some support on the French Cinderella topic by offering a few of these. My interest in Cinderellas from France has definitely increased this year, most likely due to that man from Aix !! ( Beryllium Guy) Londonbus1

Nice selection....I believe the Foire is held every year.Looking at the dates on the Exposition labels,it lasts much longer so I doubt it was a yearly event. Bob

Finally some of my pre-Xmas purchases have arrived. Some poster stamps and labels from two different sources. LMC Ligue Maritime et Coloniale Francaise LMF Ligue Maritime Francaise. Very patriotic, emphasizing the use of French and French Colonial products.Have not seen these before, find them very interesting and attractive.
