I obtained these Guatemala 1894 stamps at our recent stamp club auction.
Actually they are revenue stamps. I can find information on these without the star stamped on them, but cannot find anything concerning the star "stamp" issues. Does anyone have more information about them?

Hi Don Try sending your inquiry to: www.guatemalastamps.com/I had a question once and one of the members was extremely helpful. I think one of the TSF members is a member of the society. Jerry B

Looks like a postal cancellation to me. The Purple star was a common cancel on early Guatemalan issues

Hi Looks like a postal cancellation to me. The Purple star was a common cancel on early Guatemalan issues That is true but I don't think that it is a cancellation. Maybe if one or two individual stamps but not a blocks. I do not know enough Guatemalan history but they could be an indicator of some sort. I think it is similar to the issues of Colombia during the 1000 days war. Jerry B

I think I have to agree with Jerry about the star not being a cancellation. The positioning of the star is too uniform across the block of stamps. I would have to say it was definitely done on mass, by some mechanized process. I suppose that doesn't rule out a precancel of some sort, but I don't think they were hand stamped, which would seem more consistent with a 19th century cancel.

antoniusra is correct in that there was an early Guatemala star cancellation. It was a more stylized star, though.
