The middle house on your FDC, Dutch colonial design, could very well have been drawn from the house where I grew up. It was a highly popular design in the 1920s, so much so that folks could buy them as kits from Sears.

The middle house on your FDC, Dutch colonial design, could very well have been drawn from the house where I grew up. It was a highly popular design in the 1920s, so much so that folks could buy them as kits from Sears. My girlfriend lives in a catalogue house - in her case, a 1925 Aladdin Detroit. These houses were essentially a big jigsaw puzzle, 12,000 pieces of pre-cut lumber, each piece individually numbered and a 75 page book of instruction blueprints to put it all together correctly. The kits were shipped by rail car, and it was claimed by the manufacturer that a man of "average abilities" could have a completed house in around 90 days. Here's a shot of her house along with the appropriate page from an Aladdin catalogue of the era. Ryan

Beautiful house. The siding looks nice, but I think I would prefer the brick!

What a beautiful house Ryan, absolutely fabulous. Love the colour. How could she sell up ? The house didn't sell so she took it back off the market and she still lives there. I think she needed Sir Rodney as her real estate agent! Ryan

That would have been a tad unethical, as Sir Rodney would have liked to purchase the house himself.
What is it with North America, one never sees a fence ? houses look so vulnerable without that which makes good neighbours.

What is it with North America, one never sees a fence ? Rodney: I can't speak more generally, but in some of the neighborhoods I'm familiar with and/or have lived in, there's a zoning ordinance prohibiting fences, at least in the front yard. I'm not sure how widespread that restriction is ... -- Dave

I see, thanks Dave. that's totally weird, how does one sunbake in the nikki? where do you paint the Cricket stumps? how do you keep in your pets? what is there to stop the mis hit Golf chips? where does your passionfruit climb? what do you talk over, with your neighbour, when hanging out the washing? Man, give me a fence, give me ownership of my little piece of dirt.

Use of fences is different based on region, it seems. My girlfriend's house has no fence to the side neighbour, there is a fence on the other side the full length of the lot (it borders an elementary school), and there's a fence to the rear neighbour. In Portland, our house had both a full front fence and a full rear fence. In Calgary, common usage has no fence in the front yard and a full fence in the rear, but no direct rear neighbour - we have alleys in the back that divide the houses, that's where you park your ugly winter beater car, where the garbageman drives, etc.
There's little cause for a sunbake in the nikky in Calgary, nor do cricket stumps feature much. But the hockey nets go on the front street, sometimes you pull them out of the way when a car approaches ("CAR!!").

Man, give me a fence, give me ownership of my little piece of dirt. R.Frost wrote about walls (and by extension, fences) thusly: Before I built a wall I'd ask to know What I was walling in or walling out, And to whom I was like to give offence. Something there is that doesn't love a wall, That wants it down.

We have odd ordinances around here too mainly about swimming pools and yes, fences. The pools have to above ground or if it's a below ground a fence is required built to very specific specifications and materials and height. So the neighborhood kids cant fall in and drown and in the winter you can tell it's there (and not go through the cover to certain death!) If a structure has a roof you need a permit -even for a doghouse! It can get very tricky keeping everyone happy on the city council!
