My name is Tony Vella from Ottawa, Ontario Canada. I have collected stamps all my life particularly since I retired from active work in the Canadian Federal Government at age 50. I am now 70. Three years ago I decided to "go back to school" and enrolled in a correspondence course in Classical Latin through a foreign uni. For health reasons - 5 hours a day of Classical Latin can really get to you particularly if your memory is not what it used to be - I decided to take a semester off and repeat it later on this year. In the meantime I have given away some 100 three-ring binders of a world-wide stamp collection and retained only my Pre-Independence India and States, and my Official Departmental Stamps of Argentina. Recently someone gave me a shoebox of South Africa and two shoe boxes of world-wide and got me started again: world-wide and used (no mint unless obviously hinged).
I was not particularly pleased with my past "forum environment" and through completely unrelated correspondence with an old friend I was introduced to this forum. I have read a random selection of posts here and I do indeed feel a friendlier atmosphere. I don't know why I would want to restart a hobby at age 70 - or go back to school for that matter - but as I learned in my second semester: Quem deus vult perdere, prius dementat. I shall try to abide by the rules since in any case it is my usual way of going about things. I have retained my avatar from my previous forum existence. I hope it is allowed because it means a lot to me.
Nice to meet you guys.

Welcome, Tony! This is a pretty friendly board, so I hope you'll feel right at home very soon!
I took 5 years of Latin in junior high and high school. (Amazingly, in public schools in South Carolina.) It was only after I got a feel for Latin that I could come to understand English grammar, and the vocabulary certainly helped my SAT and graduate school admissions test scores and helped give me a structure for studying other foreign languages (even non-Romance ones). So I tip my hat to you -- I have nothing but fond memories of that study. (Even if I can barely read a Latin sentence today!)

Thanks guys, sure appreciate the welcome. To froggie: I shall be starting a new thread about my Argentine Official Departmentals because I am still missing a few. So keep an eye on Argentina the next day or two. Hope, you like what you'll see.

Hi Tony. I did one year each of Latin and Classical Greek way back when, and barely passed both of them! I've always regretted not keeping my basic Latin and Greek skills up, but maybe it is not too late for me to do that.

Welcome to the forum Tony Not understanding Latin has been one of the reasons I never took a trip to Latin America.

Nice to meet you.....
I tried the rules thing one time...... I found it's better to ask forgiveness, rather than permission. Sorry I can't type it in Latin, I barely get it out in English, which to those who know me, still don't believe it is my only language.
Happy stamp'n..... you never can let it go.
Mike
