Two more items picked up the other day. A Canada Tobacco strip Series 1942. With the black denominations and serial number, this indicates usage starting in 1965. The blue New Brunswick Liquor Control Board strip shows no denomination, indication of amount of tax paid, or control numbers. I don't have a date on it, but it looks fairly contemporary.

hey Jeff. Not specifically. The VanDam catalogue doesn't include tobacco stamps, but C.D. Ryan's Catalogue of Federal Tobacco Stamps of Canada (June 2013) lists the tobacco strip as an RP1869 'Series of 1942 - Black Denominations and No Serial Numbers starting 1965.' No value set in the catalogue. As for the New Brunswick liquor bottle seal, the only listing I can find at this point is in a book called 'A Study of the Liquor Bottle Seals of Canada' by E.F. Vilter, published by BNAPS. The book shows a very crude image of the seal, and reads,
New Brunswick 'Here we have two types - Type I (my seal) is a bright blue and measures 111 x 12 mm, and the Type II measures 132 x 13 mm and is dark blue. They have no control number.'

What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many catalogues ....

Not quite a tobacco strip, just a stamp. Featuring a young KGV and some nice lathe designs. Ryan

Remember this one? I had won this cigar stamp at an auction, still on it's plastic White Owl box, and was having issues getting it off. Finally managed to detach the large section this morning and have reassemble the strip. Not perfect, I know - wasn't expecting it to be. But I think a nice example of a Series C (1935) RG622. As you may remember it was split in two where the box was open, and there was some other damage where it rounded the corner. The back is held together with hinges and it is now resting in a plastic mount. They are the good Dennison hinges, so perhaps one day, if I'm feeling ambitious, and my hands are steady I might take it apart where it was broken on the box and try to reattach it a little straighter.

I seem to be developing a taste for tobacco stamps lately. Added these today, picked up at our club bourse. Mostly 1935 Series C (with various overprints) and a 1968 'wing' stamp. They join these four which came in that revenue batch last week. With what I already had, it's making for quite a vario page. SMOKIN'!

Ryan lists that bottom left stamp, the small rectangle 1/8lb Series of 1887, as RN2. In a separate article, he had stated that they were only used for a few years and were printed in small quantities. I discovered all of this while looking for information on a pair I just picked up: The left stamp is very rough, and the right stamp would look better by itself, but I can't bring myself to separate them after reading the comment that they were printed in low quantities. And yet, without looking too hard, I saw a block of four on SCF, and yours, and my pair, and can't help but wonder whether they might be relatively common? edit: I'll add for anyone who finds this through a search that Ryan says these were for cut tobacco, which would seemingly put them in the same category as the strips.

nice pair, cjd! here's a CSeries Tall stamp (RC396 in the Ryan catalogue) with an (R.J.) Reynolds 101 cancel. I suppose this could be a precancel. Many stamps in the Ryan catalogue show excise tax stamped/overprinted on the tobacco stamps. Here are four Canadian excise stamps (two 2 leaf and two 3 leaf variety) with tobacco alpha-numeric cancels. Ryan shows some examples of these cancels, but doesn't explain them. edit - well on looking at the page, after typing that, in fact he notes that 6-10-D is the Excise Licence code for Imperial Tobacco.

You folks might not figure I'm anti-smoking by looking at this thread! Another addition acquired today. A slightly damaged, yet big and beautiful 1883 Series Fine cut Chewing Tobacco Stamp. The M57 indicates Montreal Division
This guy measures 2.5" x 4.75"

Was updating the photos in this tobacco thread, when I thought I'd add this cigarette card I inherited years ago in an old box of coins my dear ol' Dad kept.

I think this thread has gone beyond the original 'strip' label. We're getting all sorts of stuff here. Here are three I picked up today. These are referred to in Christopher Ryan's 'Catalogue of Federal Tobacco Stamps of Canada (2013) as Small Oblong Stamps. Series C 1935 cigar stamps. I've really got to get my tobacco collection in order. The dealer I visited today had a ton of tobacco stamps, all for 50ยข a piece!

Picked up more of these today. I tell ya, this may be worse than smokin' the real thing (well, ok, not really!) I've managed to reorganize all these into three vario pages, cigarette, tobacco and cigar, so at least they don't look so 'all over the place' like they do here.
