So, for those than don't know, there is an interesting topic collection field: Europa Stamps Every year, a theme is picked at the European nations that participate, create stamps based on that theme. Here is the Wikipedia article on Europa stamps: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europa_postage_stampAnd an excellent blog detailing a lot of Europa stamps with nice high res images: europa-stamps.blogspot.com/

Russia and Ukraine are both in Europe.
The Europa stamp program is not affiliated with the European Union.

They've gotten much better. The early Europa stamps were pretty uninspired. When the early ones lack good contrasting colors, I put a pretty stamp in their place. Glad to see I won't have to do that anymore when I move on to the more recent years.

Italy was one of six countries comprising the Coal and Steel Community that first issued Europa stamps on September 15, 1956. The other five countries, Belgium, France, West-Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, also issued Europa stamps that year. The stamp's common design was a tower formed by the six letters of the Latin word for Europe (Europa). On September 16, 1957, Italy issued a second set of two Europa stamps; a 25 l, light blue, perf 14 (Scott 726) and a 60 l, violet blue, perf. 13 (Scott 727). The theme of the 1957 issue was a united Europe for peace and prosperity. ]

Issued September 13, 1958, the third set of Europa stamps from a common design by Andre Van der Vossen featured a dove flying over the letter "E." The issue was intended to show the European Postal Union at the service of European integration. Italy issued a 25 l, red & blue stamp (Scott 750) and the 60 l, blue & red stamp shown below (Scott 751).

Always was fond of the font on the Netherlands cancellers, the strikes are generally in good shape and easily read, GB could have taken note from them, (and Austria) before GB strikes became utterly disgusting.
Scott and Gibbons catalogues share the irritation of using Europas as "common design" in their descriptives, with usually no image, in some of Belgium the common design is not common, and not shown at all.

Iceland's 1973 Europa issue consisted of two perf 11.5 stamps of the common design type for that year. On April 30th of that year Iceland issued a 13k violet & multicolored stamp (Scott 447) and this 25k olive & multicolored stamp (Scott 448). Iceland's 1974 Europa issue, also a set of two perf. 11.5 stamps, was released on April 29, 1974. This 13k brown red and multicolored stamp (Scott 472) features a 17th century wood carving of a rider on horseback. The 20k gray & multicolored stamp (Scott 473) featured the contemporary bronze "Through the Sound Barrier" by Asmundur Sveinsson.

And let's not forget the 1984 common design that, for whatever unknown reason, is not listed in the common design section of the Scott catalogue. Ryan

And thinking about it, 1972 is missing from that list as well (although Scott does list that one in their common design section). This stamp from Spanish Andorra is horribly expensive, over $100 each. I wonder what happened to make them so rare. Ryan

This stamp from Spanish Andorra is horribly expensive, over $100 each. I wonder what happened to make them so rare. Ryan Funny you should ask, here is a response from our own TSF member Mr. Blair Stannard at a time just after Al Gore invented the internet, it was a chatty Newsgroup................... V"gordon curry" <mona@knology.net> wrote in message news:<guJ%c.45622$5s3.2080@fe40.usenetserver.com>... > Can anybody please tell me why this pair of stamps is so expensive? > All of the other Irish Europas seem to be reasonably priced. > Is there some sort of book that tells you what the mintage figures > are for Irish stamps? This issue was the FIRST Europa issue for Eire. It was largely ignored by many back in 1960. As people started collecting Europa later on, they went back to fill in empty spaces and the stamps had become scarce ESPECIALLY Mint Not Hinged. The mint Eire 1960 set catalogues $75.00 The same happened with early Europas from other countries. Liechtenstein's 1960 Europa stamp catalogues $50.00 Recently on eBay, a MNH Eire set was listed starting at $40.00 US. After 5 Bids, it sold to Marlen Stamp Co. for $52.25 US. Who knows what they will resell at? A large US dealer BUYS the same 1960 Irish set at $70.00 US. I had to dig deep to find this thread, so I'll ask the question, are there any Europa collectors among us?
I am currently working on putting all my mints into an album. I have the entire collection 1956 to about 2005. I have a big project and hope to finish the album by mid February. Then as finances permit will get caught up to present.

Bravo! Reena, glad you took the time to find the right thread. You are this month's honorary Librarian. As a worldwide collector, I have 544 Europa stamps, according to my database. A number of them will be dodgy......eg Lundy, Tranistria, Romania in exile etc etc. Wow, that is some collection you must have. I think I recall "White Ace" having Europa specialty pages, What are you using? Steiner does not do Europa.

I searched high and low for anybody that could sell me just the pages for Europa and failed to find them without paying an arm and leg and first born including my pup! So being a cheap person, I relented to making my own pages. Cardstock and mounting each country together for each year. I use Domfil catalog to help me organize and make sure I have all the stamps. I'm all the way up to 1961 in the album. Later today I'll post a few pages.
This was part of Dianne's collection. She was the expert and kept up with the entire collection. I didn't understand Europa so I just put it aside for a couple of years. Now I have decided that the stamps deserve a better "home", hence the desperation for learning as much as I can about this specialized area.
What catalog do you use for Europa?

Yes, just a few pages at a time, Reena, or we shall overdose I don't collect Europa as a specialty, Reena, that was a scan from the internet. I have heard Domfil is a good catalogue, For me, I probably would opt for Michel, esp now I believe they are selling thematics and single countries on thumb drives. (With English Language?) Unsure of the price.

And so on ...

Well, here is the cover page and then the first three pages of the album. I'm sure you will "get" the idea after that. I'll check into Michel's book and see what I can find. The Michel Europa catalogue (they call it the CEPT-Katalog) is, as of 2004 anyway, in German only, but other than learning the German names for various countries, I don't think the English reader would have too many problems with it. Apart from all of the Europa stamps, it also lists various other stamps with a common Europe theme - European Parliament stamps, European Free Trade Association stamps, Scandinavian common design issues, etc.. There is also a fairly large section on Europe themed stamps that don't fit in elsewhere, for example the stamps from various countries that celebrated the introduction of the Euro, stamps that celebrated various pan-European conferences, European Wildlife Conservation Year, Rhein-Main-Danube canal commemoratives, etc etc etc. Ryan
