How about a thread showing covers from Newfoundland, 1857-1949? I have a registered cover showing the 1939 Royal Visit (another of my favorites). St Johns to Nanaimo BC. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I like this cover for several reasons, first, it is a registered Newfoundland to Kansas City, Mo. It has a Scott #193 and a nice etiquette. The recipient, National Bellas Hess, sounded kind of familiar, so I did some research and they were a large mail order catalog company. Now I worked for the US Post Office from 1962 to 1975, so I am sure I handled their catalogs at some point but I really don't recall them. They no longer exist, but in legal circles they are famous for the lawsuit that stopped states from charging taxes on a Company that has no presence in that state. Here is a link that covers their history: Uploaded with ImageShack.us

First flight St Johns to St Anthony. This trip started on Jan. 29th, 1931. The plane, a Gypsy Moth, broke down and a mechanic had to be sent by train, then by dog team. After temporary repairs, the flight continued on Feb. 5th but several stops were required because of mechanical problems and the weather. All in all, it took almost 3 weeks for the round trip. There were 7,847 pieces of mail carried on the trip. The Gypsy Moth was an open air cockpit biplane. Flying one in Newfoundland in January - February show more bravery than I ever had! This cover has 2 nice Newfoundland scott C6 (unwatermarked) or C9 (watermarked) airmails on it. The back of the cover is stamped "Keep Sunday Sacred".

My one and only Newfoundland cover, it's actually in my small collection of YMCA stationary. The cancel is an unknown RPO, as the postmarks are only half on the piece. Passed by an R.C.A.F. censor though.
