Hi,
I just joined up. I am a retired Engineer in upstate NY. I collect US, Canada, and anything that interests me. I am a member of the APS, USPCS and the Rochester Philatelic Association. I give a talk once a year at RPA meetings. I usually find that I learn more about a subject when I prepare the talk. Some of my previous presentations are on their website.
I also write articles for the Chronicle of the United States Classic Issues (the journal of the USPCS). I have written articles on the 1847 issue on cover and the Roosevelt Small Die Proofs.
One of my ongoing projects, for the past 15 years, is updating the census of 1847 stamps (Scott 1 & 2) on cover. For those of you familiar with Thomas Alexander's 2001 book, he published a census started by Creighton Hart and Susan McDonald His book has over 13,000 listings but only a few hundred images. My census has almost 8000 images, mainly from auction catalogs and online sites (PhilaMercury, the PF, EBAY, etc.) along with lot descriptions, prices realized and biographical information about the recipient. It is a work in progress that has scans for over 50% of the known covers. I have added almost 1800 covers not listed in Alexanders book while eliminating over 300 duplicate listings. The entire census is available on www.uspcs.org in their Resource Center.
There is another census I am maintaining on the uspcs site; the Postmaster Provisional stamps on cover. This census has all the pre-1847 provisional stamps on cover, as well as a few with the stamps as well (the Millbury's, New Havens, and Brattleboros). Over 90% of the nearly 1300 items are illustrated.
A user's guide and an email address is available on the site. If you have an image of a cover not shown, feel free to send me a scan. If you have any further information not given in the cover details, let me know (such as the year of mailing from an internal dateline.) Full credit is provided
