Vulpes Chama - Cape Fox or Silver-Backed Fox Range is South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Lesie is the Tswana name for this fox. According to Wikipedia, "Tswana is an official language and lingua franca of Botswana spoken by a little over 2 million of its inhabitants." Botswana surcharged 10t on 1t of the 1987 Wildlife Conservation Issue. Scott # 480.

Nice Post! not seen that one before......... A new vulpes for me. I was watching the Commonwealth Games Marathon, in Glasgow on the weekend, and as the Kenyan gals, were streaking home, the commentator made a point about the common Kenyan name ..Cheptanui which the lass that ran second has, or had. Cheptanui is a unisex name, often bestowed, and means "failed to cry at birth"

In 1995, France released a set of 6 stamps commemorating the 300th anniversary of the death of Jean de La Fontaine, an author of fables. In this sense, he was a poet who adapted existing tales. This stamp shown here illustrates the tale of The Fox and the Crow, originally one of Aesop's fables. The Wikipedia page for this fable includes a section on the stamps issued around the world which show this fable, 8 countries in all (and I've come across a second one just the other night while sorting, so I'll post that one later). In the fable, Fox flatters Crow, telling him how lovely his voice is. Crow is pleased to hear this and he sings in response, losing the piece of cheese he was carrying, as Fox had wisely foreseen. The Liechtenstein stamp is the high value from a set of three 1993 stamps which show local wildlife. Ryan

Unusual, Crows are very smart birds, one of the few birds that use tools to get food. Here another bird loses, he gets the liver, but not the recipe thestampforum.boards.net/post/10878

Dug through a pile of Hungary stamps the other day and came across these two. Here's the other stamp I mentioned a couple of days ago showing the fable of The Fox and the Crow, issued in 1960. And Left Fox looks very handsome in this stamp from 1966, posing nicely for the camera. " All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up." (Only the head is showing because the stamp series purported to show hunting trophies ...) Ryan

Here's a pair of Canadian swift foxes (vulpes velox), one with teeth and one without. Ryan Oh! I didn't know there are 2 versions of this stamp!

JeffS -- Hmm, Terry Fox's 'Fox' is a capitalised Fox, not a common noun 'fox' that I referred to in my statement.

The upcoming 2023 issues announced by USPS today include a 40-cent red fox. It's an unusual denomination, but a handsome stamp — reminiscent of the Hungary 1966 issue that Ryan posted upthread. My older son is currently reading Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr Fox. I'm getting an idea for a cachet...
