Have noticed the difference in size and they do appear more...."bold/distinct"... Much differences, Stan 1 is blue the other is ultramarine (outremer)....also typo vs engraved Gandon and finally size and perf, the Y&T 725 being bigger

Wow, I've never seen that set look that pretty! What software did you use if you don't mind me asking? I'm debating whether or not to take the plunge on a Lighthouse hingeless, but the idea of custom pages is appealing for the flexibility as I have quite a few pairs, "bloc de feuille", etc.

chrischross I use Scribus (It's free!) - It took a bit initially, but I've now built enough pages I can grab previous ones to serve as a starting template. I like the flexibility to display as I see fit, rather than chronological order (and some of the stamps span a number of years before all the denominations are issued. Not everyone agrees, but that's the beauty of personalizing the hobby, plus I can include spaces for pairs, blocks, interesting cancels, more shades than described, etc. (and I'm stoill learning everything Scribus can do) And thanks for the wow!

stainlessb -That's the thing, I've usually thought of that set as ho-hum, but the way you have it laid out, it pops. Thanks for the Scribus recommendation, as I see it has a lot of community support, especially in the areas of automating page layout (the GermanStamps.net Page Generator specifically).

1944 Rooster and Marianne Y & T 630-648 There are several shades that seemed to me to be different enough I included them with the letter sufficx "x" at the end of the Y &T #. These 2 pages will be placed in the sheet protectors such that they oppose each other when open. If anyone should have duplicates of those lack, please let me know (mint/used no matter). I do have a duplicate of #630a 10 centimes green with white background if that works into things!

France Y&T 1464 & 65 gutter pair, issued 11-30-1965 at first I thought the date cancellation was an error and read year 1958, but comparing with the time stamp (above date) it is 1968 with a 6 starved for ink. no idea what city/town the cancellation is- I can make out what appears to JUAN-LES-_A(?)NS(?) and then from there who knows Happy Halloween!

received a couple of small lots The 15 c Sower are (from L - R) Type I, II, and VI I'm on a mission to acquire a number of the overprints below (maybe one will be legitimate?) I can't find much information on them, so far the 3 I have all have cancellation over the overprint (though that could be forged also)

a detailed list of pre-cancels? I'm finding scarce information (Maury Ceres & Dallay I have yet to discover where they discuss...if the discuss at all)
I'm unsure whether to place with the series, or dedicate a few pages just to the pre-cancels? (similar to Belgium)
thanks!

Just spent some time looking through this old thread and I agree, French stamps are some of the loveliest.. Seeing all your DIY pages has inspired me...
I've just picked up a couple of small French lots on ebay so I think I now have a decent enough accumulation, and now can't wait to start sorting and building a simple collection...
So which catalogue would be best to acquire? I want to keep it fairly simple to start with.. I'm not too concerned about shades or other minute differences at this point in my collecting career! I have an SG whole world but what does everyone else suggest? Y&T?

IMHO- several references are advantageous, as some go into more detail on some things- as far as shades, it is very subjective and (at least I find) some of the stated color 'shades' isn't always real helpful
Y & T is a good starting point, although i find that I refer to Maury, Ceres, & Dallay, or Spink | Maury, and I also have Marianne which only goes to 1900 and I find it to be the least helpful- The general WW catalogues basically seem to cover one of each stamp with out a lot of details, so if you have absolutel6y no interest in Types, variants, etc., the SG WW may be just fine

While looking for another 1924 400th Anniversary of the poet Pierre de Ronsard, Yvert # 209... not high value, but all I have is heavily canceled copy in poor condition... (I see plenty on E-Bay, Delcampe and Hipstamp for not much more than a dollar plus shipping.... in fact shipping may be more than the stamp) This has been sitting in an envelope when I put it in a 2 row Vario for anything large. I apparently never bothered at the time to look at it! i think i will make a page today for it as I do have the correct size mount (assuming I can cut it straight 1954 Red Cross booklet pair - Yvert 1006 & 1007

wakeybluenoseI agree with Stan stainlessb on the subject of catalogs. If you were from the States, I would say that Scott is easy and gives you a $US value but is not useful for varieties. I use Maury and at times Yvert & Tellier - I am from Canada - Being from London, SG would probably be your best bet. If you need help, send a PM to Stan in Sacramento, California René

When I posted about the French elections last month, I was looking for a particular booklet entitled "the values of the French Republic" to illustrate the post and couldn't find it. So best to order the stamps to be sure I had them They arrived today:

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50
