This is a small mailer addressed to an Mr. M.V. Button of 26 East Ave, Wellsboro, Pa. (Pennsylvania Grand Canyon region) U.S.A. From New Zealand. I love the stamps and would like to know a little about them. Number and what they commemorated? These are semi-postals from 1939. Among the major English-speaking nations, New Zealand is really the only one with a history of consistently releasing charity stamps. You'll notice there is an overprint on your issues - the original plates were denominated at 1/2d + 1/2d and 1d + 1d, but the stamps were never released without the overprint (presumably due to a rate change). The next year, the same designs were reissued with the denominations engraved for the updated rates, and then those stamps were reissued again in 1941 with a date overprint. Your stamps have a tidy catalogue value, $5 each in my older 2009 Scott. Ryan

That's right. New Zealand started with yearly semi-postal issues in 1929 - your 1939 issues were the first year that the surcharge was not equal in value to the postage, and that's the reason for the black overprint. Scott B14 and B15.

I'm tempted to move this to the New Zealand section. Or maybe split up the post?

I'm tempted to move this to the New Zealand section. Or maybe split up the post? Depends if you want New Zealand enthusiasts to see your post. Unless a dedicated search is made by a collector, and he/she fossiks through thousands of posts, your post / energy / time / knowledge had a shelf life of approx 4 days. Put it under New Zealand, and it could be giving joy, years from now.
