What's with the tiny punched hole patterns that look like an alternate form of cancellation? We're they done before the stamp was affixed or after, riddling the envelope and its contents with tiny holes? Seem to be on issues from the 1930s.

The perfins are done before the stamp is used and are usually there to prevent pilfering. Many governments used them for official mail only and some companies used them for mail used for business and not private use.

Perfins are fun to collect, but the biggest annoyance I have with them is the difficulty in finding reference material to tell me what the perfin represents. Perfin catalogues are often very rare and extremely expensive. So in that regard, Canadian perfins are great to collect because the standard literature is freely available on the internet. This page on the British North America Philatelic Society website contains both individual chapters of the catalogue and, at the bottom of the page, a link to download the entire catalogue as a single .PDF file. Since I'm sorting through a French collection now, and since we're in the middle of the soccer World Cup, here's an early soccer thematic with a perfin. I've also scanned it from the back and reversed the image to show the AG perfin clearly. Ryan

I collect Irish perfins and I was able to purchase a "catalog" from The Perfin Club (http://www.perfins.org/). The catalog is cleverly printed so that you can also use it as an album. I don't remember how much I paid, but I don't think it was very expensive. But, that was for only one country. A worldwide perfin catalog is another animal entirely.
